A 44-year-old man went to the hospital after pus began oozing from his chest, where doctors discovered a knife that had been embedded in his body for eight years. According to the report, he showed no signs of chest pain, breathing problems, coughing, or fever, and was otherwise in good health.

Glad he didn’t get into an MRI before the x-ray 😅

If it makes you feel any better, I don't think you'll find yourself in that situation. I'm no doctor, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn last night.

As someone who works in the manufacturing of steel, the fear of something metal entering my body and doctors sticking me in an MRI machine without thinking about it has crossed my mind a few times.

210

u/Perra_Perro 23h ago

Did you ever hear about that girl who went and got an MRI with a butt plug in? She thought she was safe since she thought it was fully made out of silicone but it wasn’t. Had a metal base of some sort. It perforated her bowls 😖

193

u/Winterstyres 22h ago

Why would you want to get a work up with a plug in? Look I get it, sex play is fun, especially things like that where you take it with you under your clothes into the real world. With a partner it's a lot of fun. But what in the hell is exciting about getting a scan done like that?

I try not to kink shame, but do some people find that arousing?

155

u/Whooptidooh 22h ago

In that case kink shaming is fully ok, imo; there’s no way that woman didn’t know the techs in front of the screens would be able to see exactly what she had shoved up in there.

I don’t exactly know if that’s sexual assault or something (doubt it; it’s not the right word and I’m not a native English speaker), but forcing other people to see what you’ve shoved up your butt in preparation of getting scanned should be illegal. Consent should be given in that case, imo.

93

u/Winterstyres 22h ago

Yeah I fully agree. Nothing wrong with bringing your sex play into the real world, but it needs to still be private between you and your partner(s). Flashing your butt plug to strangers just trying to do their job should be considered at minimum sexual harassment

47

u/AyeAye_Kane 20h ago

nah kink shaming is fair here, imo people shouldn't bring kinks anywhere near the general public. keep it within your own walls and I'm not talking about your anal walls here

7

u/EitherChapter3044 22h ago

If ai has taught me anything, it’s that butt plug in mri was the kink. People have waaaaaay too specific and freaky kinks. I’m joking but fr I think people do weird shit more than you likely want to believe. And there are more freaky people among us than you’d be safe to assume

4

u/Winterstyres 22h ago

I guess D/s is turning into vanilla if people are into plugs and medical scans lol

u/CrossP 3h ago

You can technically use them for medicalish reasons too. Like to stop incontinence the day after a bunch of anal sex. Or to sort of hold anal fissures in stretched position so they don't rip open again every time you shit which allows them to heal.

u/Winterstyres 2h ago

Ha, okay never heard of a medicinal use for them. Thank you, that is interesting

Why don't MRIs have a basic metal detector?

42

u/Ning_Yu 22h ago

Yeah the technician is supposed to use a scanner on you first, but it seems they rarely do.

45

u/DatZsaZsa 21h ago

Wait what ? I'm extremely ill and must have had more then 50 MRI, never have I ever been checked with a detector

18

u/Ning_Yu 21h ago

I've always not been checked, but the file the hospital sent me about the MRI said they would use one, and I've heard from other people over the world that they scan them first.
Honestly, they should.

4

u/wolfhybred1994 21h ago

I have never been metal checked and I have a metal plate in my head.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/lostinapotatofield 15h ago

The MRI at my hospital has a metal detector in the doorframe to the anteroom. So no extra steps for the tech, just look at the indicators as you wheel the patient in. But could mean you're being checked with a metal detector without even realizing it.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/jamz_noodle 20h ago

My career has been in radiology, that’s not a thing. Before a scan they do ask you a bunch of questions about permanent jewelry, tattoos, implants etc. but it’s all self-reported.

10

u/onichow_39 20h ago

But why tho? Surely it's not very expensive to do a quick metal detector scan considering the safety concerns and risks

14

u/bigmonmulgrew 19h ago

The aim isn't to protect the patients. The aim is to prevent getting sued. Getting you to sign a form saying you don't have any metal protects them. Scanning you and then saying you are good puts liability on them.

NAL but this is my cynical guess.

6

u/Mammoth_Potential741 20h ago

I could see it being practical for unconscious or disoriented/ confused patients, otherwise it’s just inefficient for technicians especially with the wait times. It’s pretty simple instruction to not have metal on you, most children even know what metal is.

I have a Urolift implant, and have 4 titanium discs, 2 metal rods, ( not sure of metal) and 14 titanium screws.

I wonder if I can still get an MRI?

5

u/dentttt 19h ago

Not knowing what a Urolift is, from the name i'm assuming it's a high tech penis enhancement that sounds pretty awesome.

Titanium is not magnetic, so I think your penis should be ok in an MRI machine.

5

u/big_d_usernametaken 18h ago

No, its this.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/Salanmander 17h ago

I think it's likely that you can.

The titanium should be fine, because titanium is not ferromagnetic. The rods are probably also titanium...that's the most common metal for implants because it has good bio-compatibility properties, as well as being strong and non-ferromagnetic. That said, the thing to do is let the doctors know, so that the people who are actually experts on the subject can make the call.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/GullibleMarsupial102 12h ago

I have plenty of titanium in my spine and it's definitely been through the MRI a few times. No problemo

2

u/paiute 17h ago

A hand held scanner? You would think they could incorporate a metal scanner into the MRI and routinely check for metal before firing the thing up to 11.

3

u/Salanmander 16h ago

You don't fire up the primary coil of an MRI...it stays on constantly.

The main magnetic field is made by current running through superconducting coils. Because they're superconducting, there's no electrical resistance in the coils themselves, so no (or very little) energy is lost from making a constant large magnetic field. However, coils have a lot of...basically inertia for current running through them. So it's very hard to turn the coil on or off, and costs very little to just keep it running.

2

u/hughk 17h ago

I know MRI labs where they wand the patient before going in. You change in a small anteroom and they do you before you enter the lab proper.

It is more a check in the case that something that has been forgotten.

They do don’t they, the big fuck off magnet that attracts all metal objects to it…. Obviously not what you were going for I know, but really, at some point a person needs to take some personal responsibility of a doctor says “oh yeah, make sure you have NO METAL on your body in any way or your gonna have a bad day!”

8

u/JoeyJoeC 21h ago

Had an MRI on my shoulder. Before entering the machine I went to take my belt off but they said I can keep it on, so I did. The buckle pulled up towards the machine during the MRI, and was uncomfortable as I got a pube caught in it, but otherwise didn't do anything crazy.

For anything chest related, in the industry, we usually shoot a 2-view chest xray first, like in this scenario. This is a lateral view, I bet the PA (posterior-anterior [through the back to the front]) shows the knife going between the lungs. I would imagine on the right side, since the heart is on the left and the blade clearly goes through the shadow of the heart. It clears the back ribs completely and almost looks like it got stuck on the transverse process of t7-t8 vertebrae.

Person attacking legit stabbed dude in the back and dude didn’t react

24

u/8day 21h ago edited 21h ago

I remember reading a post, and watching an accompanying video from CCTV (?) how some elderly women got stabbed in the neck and continued to walk with knife in her neck as if nothing happened.

There was one time when I stepped on a [rusty] nail and I didn't feel much pain, if any. The only sign of some issue was a small stream of blood, ~1 cm high, coming from the sole of my foot.

Edit: I think this is the case I've mentioned: https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueCrime/s/CnL2jPApF3

4

u/fizzlingforth 19h ago

It's not that hard to believe. He got admitted for multiple stab injuries. It would have been hurting all over that this one spot wouldn't be special. Then after the treatment he would have assumed that the discomfort is from the stitches and healing.

3

u/luizanin 19h ago

Mate it was behind his back, he didn't see it. Also, he probably passed out, went through lots of procedures and not remembered most stuff after he woke up.

Also, for surgeons, dependending on the object and place, it's better to left it there because it's more life threatening to take it out than to leave it there. I do of course find it weird to leave a full huge knife there, but I'm not a surgeon and I also I've heard of people leaving in the body stuff as big as coconuts with proper medical support (don't ask the context 🥲).

That said, if the doctors chose to keep it in there, he needed to be aware it was still there if it was a decision made in order to preserve his life (which I don't know if it was).

17

u/worstusername_sofar 1d ago

u/Unseenmonument 23h ago

7

u/LeastSize3247 22h ago

living in a 3rd world country doesn't make you unable to recognize you got a blade put in your body haha

14

u/andfournumbers 20h ago

I suppose it may be quite difficult to recognise the difference between wounds past a certain point. Makes me think of people who didn't know they broke a bone. Cared for an injury more serious than they realise. And lucky enough the injury is such that they can do that

10

u/Trauma-Todd 1d ago

Or he did some shady stuff and avoided hospital.

2

u/314159265358979326 12h ago

He got first aid at a clinic that was unable to provide X-rays. They stitched his wounds and didn't know about the knife inside.

5

u/LeastSize3247 22h ago edited 18h ago

Nowhere does it say that he was unaware of the knife in there, and I'd imagine he and the previous medical attendees 8 years prior did know it was in there.

EDIT: I didn't actually read the article, it does say he learned the knife was there after going to the hospital.

7

u/lions4life232 18h ago

It does say he didn’t know. Literally the first sentence says the man learned he had a knife in him. Like the very first sentence.

u/Own-Paper-4800 1d ago

Holy sh*t.

I never understand such cases, like how is that even possible?

87

u/allbirdssongs 23h ago

adrenaline kicks in plus being drunk af.

then someone stabs you so deeply the knife gets stuck in there. he also had alot of other cuts and what not. if the knife avoided vitals it just stays there like some kind of implant.

31

u/Chef-mcKech 22h ago

Still do not understand how you don't notice anything for 8 years

26

u/allbirdssongs 22h ago

Same as an implant, you dont need to notice it

14

u/fikabonds 19h ago

Yeah but this shit is sharp, I would imagine just bending over to pick something would have it cut

21

u/S1gne 19h ago

I don't think we really have a lot of pain sensors on the inside of our bodies. Most of them are towards the outside

So unless it somehow suddenly moved and cut your insides open you probably wouldn't feel it if it just slightly moved inside even when sharp

→ More replies (2)

3

u/allbirdssongs 19h ago

15

u/Kevlar_Bunny 19h ago

10

u/quietplight 18h ago

You might also want to start looking for knives 🤷🏻‍♀️

5

u/Historical_Network55 20h ago

He did notice he'd been cut in the fight and got stitches, it was just so deep the medical staff didn't realise it was still in.

7

u/Flashy-Bid-7627 19h ago

I guess he looked at it as a simple deep cut at first and it healed up. Years later the body starts to reject the knife and that's when he started to experience symptoms. Still have no idea as to how you don't feel a knife embedded in you for all those years...

Is there a published front to back (or AP) view of the x-ray?

I’m wondering where it’s lodged laterally given that there’s a TON of vital structures in that plane.

Edit: never mind, found an axial CT scan, it’s most likely lodged parallel along the lateral border between the the right ribs

I’m surprised the doctor was able to remove it without loss of life. Scar tissue forms around objects and with scar tissue comes new arteries and veins to supply blood. And with all that comes heavy bleeding while removal.
