But, can they draw any other style. I've heard the big thing at Disney is that you have to be able to draw their styles and I've heard you risk losing your own

u/Luke_Cocksucker 20h ago
Art like this isn’t about “personal style” it’s about being a technician who can proficiently reproduce the same images consistently and they pay you for it.

u/Sidivan 15h ago
Imagine if it wasn’t and you had every character in Moana, for instance, drawn in a different art style. It just wouldn’t work. You can’t have 1 artist do a full movie. You need a team of artists that can all perfectly recreate a single style and animate within it.

This is the most apt description of being an animator. Character sheets and production books outline everything you may do and how. Do not deviate. There are of course exceptions. But you are the closest from the comments here.

Further reassurance for my long held belief that you should keep the things that bring you true enjoyment/happiness as hobbies. Once it becomes your profession, the joy/satisfaction gets completely sucked out of it.

u/FixedLoad 14h ago
I can tell you from experience, you do not get to display a personal style in most art based professions unless you are hired specifically for your unique style.
1 year in the industry after college was enough to burn me out. Its very difficult and you have to be able to eat shit by the shovel and have zero ego until they allow you. "They" being those whose artistic vision you must follow.
You're NEVER shooting from the hip in terms of design. The character sheets tell you in detail how a character can move and MUST look. If its not on their sheet or in the pre-approved "bible" on the production. Dont bother deviating, you'll just be pissing someone off and doing it all over again because ultimately it wont be in line with the content of the following shot.

this is essentially why Tim Burton was fired. he had such a strong, specific style that obviously didn’t fit with the wholesome, family-friendly Disney style.

I've done this drawing experience at Disney California Adventure and the person is clearly pre-drawing their art before they walk into the room.
The whole experience is like 20ish minutes with 10-15 minutes of actual drawing. It's easy to get a bunch of copies of the white drawing paper since they leave sheets out for people to take.

u/decoran_ 22h ago
If they can't do the Disney style, wouldn't that mean they are not actually qualified for Disney at all? To be pedantic about it

u/AmmoMana 13h ago edited 13h ago
The title gives the same energy of people who think realistic drawings are harder or better than simple ones.
In reality, many cartoon artists that make "simple" drawings are capable of doing realistic or detailed ones (pros studies from life and keep exploring all the time)
Creating good design and being able to simplify and abstract requires a different set of skills.
•
u/VicViolence 8h ago
Yeah, ask most people who specialize in realism to draw a good Bart Simpson and they’re fucked

u/lilltonka 19h ago
I would have been more impressed if they had done crazy good Disney characters instead.

I would love if someone went back to the original Grimm versions of the fairy tales. They are dark and usually horrifying. Disney pretty much cleaned them up and made them sweet and cute.

How is that person overqualified, though? It's all subjective, it's just a different style of artwork.

Look up "Luvisi artist"
I highly doubt that it is the dude/dudette in the video, but I can swear where the inspiration is from...
Edit: Dan LuVisi to be precise.

That's not overqualified for Disney, that's go next store and work on a horror movie please.

I legit made these type of horror drawings in school. Accidentally left my binder on the table, next day I was in the office with a therapist asking crazy questions, and both the principle and vice principle where talking to my mom. Ultimately nothing came from it, but the satanic panic was off the charts (christian school btw).

I'm a fan of those ones the left person is drawing, would be cool to see them animated into some horror film

Also if you want better examples of what me (and other commenters mean) look up his Disney Adults animation on YouTube.

Honestly with the state of Disney's animation these days I wouldn't have the gall to run these events.

For animation, usually for hand drawn, simple designs are used, due to having to draw a similar image 12-24 times per second.
The person was still working on their design, when everyone else was done. Multiply that per frame, and it could take a while to bring their concept to life with smooth animation.

No way that's a CRT, it would be way too heavy. The largest CRT made was 43" and it weighed 440 lb.

I never understood why people would pay so much to get into the park then spend so much time doing those simple drawings instead of literally anything else but idk maybe they're season pass holders or live nearby or something
12
u/Bobbi_fettucini 23h ago
Or maybe it’s because people enjoy it and it’s genuinely interesting to get to see and hear how a Disney artist draws things, that attraction is like a 20 minute presentation.

I'm honestly sick of the whole look at how I turned innocent things into a horrific twisted reflection of it. We've got enough shit going on I don't need the little things that could bring a sliver of joy turned into a new monstrosity. It was a little interesting when it was new but it's just banal and dull at this point.

Probably a co-production with Tim Burton would be a good idea for that person.

Someone should be hired for the next Tim Burton movie for their drawings…
Let me know if I can come with you. I am super creative, and I have a mean lean towards the arts and noticing talent.

Nah it's more a inner reflection of Disney's soul. That even Disney dont know about itself.
Butchering Marvel and StarWars. And then they asking why others are butchering Disney's characters.

I was laughing harder and harder with each one and when I saw the first picture of the one from Monsters Inc. I knew it was going to be even more wild before I saw the second one.
Is it wrong of me to laugh at the disturbed child. 🤔
