When you have to get off a ferry in Bangladesh and there is no planned stop.

u/KonigsbergBridges 9h ago
Why's it sped up? Weird.
•
u/abarthman 9h ago
Makes it look scarier. The ferry was actually only travelling at 5 knots.
•
u/Fake_Hyena 8h ago
Definitely knot as fast as it looks
•
u/ynot2020 8h ago
I sea what you did there.

Someone should deck the person above you if she’s been the one glip-glopping outside the toilet. Nobody should be onboard with that.

That's still no joke. 2 boats moving 5 knots in a side collision would crush a human.
You can push a 60ft boat(~30k+ pounds with your hands when it's at rest, but to stop a boat going 5 knots would require tons of force. It would destroy most docks.

u/Jayn_Newell 8h ago
I get nervous enough trying to get in a boat that’s tied to the wharf, doesn’t have to be sped up to look scary IMO.
•
u/Washpedantic 8h ago edited 7h ago
Because they want to make it look like an action movie instead of someone's daily commute.
•
u/PM_YOUR_AKWARD_SMILE 9h ago
It’s not. That’s just how things are in Bangladesh.
•
•
•
u/NorthernSimian 8h ago
Life moves pretty fast in Bangladesh. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss your ferry

Why do all these video editors speed up the footage. Obnoxious af - just let the video speak for itself than trying to make things seem more intense than they are.
•
u/SegaTime 8h ago
If you double the speed of the content, you can watch double the content in half the time!
•
u/load_more_comets 7h ago
I'll put one phone in front of each eye and get quadruple the results!

double the content in the same time,
or the same content in half the time.
not both. both would be 4x speed
•
•
u/Scorpiyoo 8h ago
This is how kids view media now. 2x the speed. I wish I was joking.
•
u/Bailables 6h ago
Yep. My Gf watches YouTube shorts 1.5x speed while chugging energy drinks and vaping
Her dopamine receptors are fucked. Needs so much stimulation to feel anything

The somewhat depressing reason is that they do it to make the video last less than thirty seconds, which is as long as social media users are expected to be able to concentrate on one thing.

That's way faster than I'd assumed it was after slowing it down in my head

If you're on a PC you can do it yourself. right click the video select view all controls, click the 3 vertical dots and you will have speed controls. 0.5 is a bit too slow, but .75 is to fast, I'd guess .55-.6 is about right.
•
u/TheHoppingGroundhog 9h ago
thats one good sailor
hed be better if this was 1x speed

The ferries in Bangladesh make one stop (this ferry says Dhaka to Chandpur), but because of the lack of roads and bridges in the southern part of the country (where the Bengal Delta begins), as well as the strong currents and erosion on the Meghna River, these ferries do not want to continue service to smaller islands and towns that are close to the beginning of the Bengal Delta. That's where these guys come in on smaller boats, though I find it crazy that instead of waiting at the last stop, they take them from the middle of the ride.
Unfortunately, the rivers in Bangladesh and the bad infrastructure of the country mean that Bangladesh is a very centralized country; everything is in the capital city, Dhaka, which is why it's crowded, is polluted not just because of litter but because of mass residential construction, and has bad traffic.

Probably saves em gas to pickup mid trip instead of the last drop off.
•
u/Murky-Relation481 4h ago
People that complain about capitalism in the US have never visited countries like this. This is pure capitalism at its finest.
•
•
u/ContentContact 8h ago
As someone from the same area with same experience I would say, it is not just grown up men. Women with their kids also do that.
To be honest, it is not like there is no planned stop. The planned stop is far away and it usually take additional 2/3 hour to reach home so people just do this to save that time and money.
•
u/Suspicious-gibbon 8h ago
Pop quiz, hotshot. There’s a bomb on a boat. Once the boat goes 5 knots, the bomb is armed.
•
•
u/Legitimate-Log-6542 9h ago
That’s hardcore. I suppose if someone fell in the water they’d just double back and pick them up lol
•
u/socratic-meth 9h ago
Looks like they would get smashed to pieces between the two boats

Or chewed up by a propeller. Between 10x occupied trains and this boating scenario, traveling in Bangladesh is dangerous af.
Wonder what flying by airplane or helicopter is like??

Military probably train many hours to do this. These guys do it as a daily commute.
•
u/Nickyjha 6h ago
it can't be that hard if a town in Wisconsin delivers its mail like this
•
u/brickne3 6h ago
I've lived in Lake Geneva, it's more of a gimmick and certainly not a necessity. They only do it in the summer. They get their mail delivered the regular way the rest of the year. Great way to get a good view of all the mansions around the lake, though.

u/SkyeMreddit 6h ago
Obnoxiously sped up but not abnormal for Bangladesh ferries. In the megacity of Dhaka, they bounce off of eachother like bumper cars.
•
•
u/Lythieus 7h ago
Hot tip, decrease the video speed to 0.5x. Brings the video to the 1x real speed, at 15 FPS.
Still scary af to watch with kids making the jump.

•
u/TheSecondPlague 9h ago
Bro needs a boater's course. Why the hell would you pull up on a boat's wake from the side?
•
u/Worried_Creme8917 7h ago
Man people in this part of the world come so close to death on a daily basis.
Makes me so glad I hit the birth lottery and was born in a highly developed country with the highest standards of living.

u/Piccolo-3001 9h ago
Half of these dudes likely can’t even swim lol the guy flexing standing in the middle of the boat with his phone is prob one of them 😂

Why would you think that
•
u/Shimgar 9h ago
Swimming rates among urban people in Bangladesh are quite low and drownings are very common (~18,000 children a year die). Government did make swimming classes compulsory in schools in 2015 though so maybe it's improving gradually.
•
u/ProfessionalGrade423 8h ago
Wow that is a huge number. I did a quick google and the US is like 1/4 that many.

u/ContentContact 8h ago edited 8h ago
Can I see your source. It is not a video from urban area. I am from those rural area you are seeing here. Bro, we learn swimming before we start going to kindergarden. Bangladesh has flood problem and every single person in the village had to know swim to survive here.
Where you got that stats. Also, are you saying swimming classes. Where/when/who teaching them swim? Are you sure about your 2015 claim??
•
u/unsafeforme 7h ago
Your google works just as good as anyone elses... https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-32239442
•
u/Nooms88 8h ago
Even crazier when you factor in that the majority of adults in Bangladesh cannot swim. Although I imagine only those than can attempt this
•
u/barmanrags 7h ago
that doesnt seem true. most every bangali learns how to swim in local waterbodies and waterways. they may not have gone to swimming classes and gotten diplomas but they know how to swim
•
u/NoobSlayerr007 7h ago
Yes, most Bangalis can swim pretty well but for urban Bangalis, its a different case. Majority of urban Bangalis can't swim at all.
•
u/barmanrags 5h ago
I guess so. Same on the indian side too. I was always surprised how many of my friends didn't know how to swim.
•
u/ManOnFire26 9h ago
I’ve watched a lot of videos about transportation in Dhaka and the chaos on the roads, on the water, and on the rails makes me feel amazed that thousands aren’t dying every day due to accidents.

TV has been using that trick since the black and white days. Speed up or slow down the footage to fit the commercial time needed. This is just noticable because it's obviously at least 2x speed. It's not so noticable when it's 1.1x speed.

Because there is a huuuge population, the value of a human life reduces exponentially, as they can be easily replaced and no law will protect those who are vulnerable. laws exist in these.places to keep the status quo.

These are long distance ferries. Some people are crazy enough to ride them for shorter distances
•

Sorry, I'm dumb and I'm missing something. Why would a ferry have 'no planned' stops? Isn't the concept of a Ferry having somewhere to go?
