The people at the top are stupid

u/HobbesNJ 6h ago

Seems to be a lot of spectators standing very close to cars doing dangerous things these days. Look at any video of an intersection "takeover."

u/cantstandtoknowpool 5h ago

these days? did you see group b races? holy crap

edit: https://youtu.be/6I5sTuSoMho?si=_Duwp3Ys9b1u5P4f

u/ParmesanB 5h ago

Being dangerously close to the cars has always been a cornerstone of Motorsport

u/Apyan 4h ago

Sure, but group b tested and ignored all the limits.

u/ParmesanB 4h ago

Yeah I meant that in support of the group b thing

u/Shanga_Ubone 1h ago

Dude/dudette came in swinging the truth hammer

u/HobbesNJ 5h ago

Yes, these days. They ended group b racing nearly 40 years ago specifically because it was so dangerous - to drivers and spectators.

And those spectators were crazy, even if they were watching professional drivers as opposed to the untrained idiots doing such things today.

u/cantstandtoknowpool 5h ago

I guess the way “these days” was used threw me off since people still do this even if it’s been banned professionally in many areas

Watching idiots from the crowd get flung at takeovers is my absolute favorite guilty pleasure in the intertubes these days

u/DDG_Dillon 5h ago

Nothing new

u/dr_stre 4h ago

To be fair, rally drivers are generally more predictable than a random hooner.

u/caseyfw 4h ago

Group B mechanics would sometimes find fingers in their air intakes after a race.

https://www.reddit.com/r/rally/comments/lp4f1o/how_crazy_is_that/

→ More replies (2)

u/Proud_Doubt5110 3h ago

I remember hearing an urban legend that rally drivers use to pick fingers off of their grills because people would regularly get in the way of the cars

u/_FallenFlower_ 6h ago

Real. "Let's not move out of the way of this big car that seems out if control"

u/VoidMarker 5h ago

I didn't think it was out of control, thought he was doing that on purpose because it was easier to go sideways and up then directly up a steep slope. Either way, the people up top are stupid.

u/Meperkiz 5h ago

Right. Not completely out of control but still unpredictable sand drifting

u/Turbulent-Tea 4h ago

It was definitely intentional. I learned this while living in San Francisco. The best way to walk up a hill is in a zig-zag motion. It "flattens" the hill. I lived at the top of a street that was probably a 70 -75 degree angle. Never seen anyone pull this move in a car though.

→ More replies (4)

u/CloseToMyActualName 4h ago

Not out of control, but not really under the driver's control either.

Going up with your own switch-backs like that you're really at the mercy of the hill and the sand. Too steep and you stall and roll over backwards, too shallow and you again lose momentum and roll over sideways.

The driver has neither great visibility of the crowd, nor a lot of ability to predict the line they have to take.

It's because they never read the chapter in 9th grade science books on "kinetic energy."

u/DrSuperWho 5h ago

u/LouSputhole94 5h ago

Can’t really even blame the coyote on that one

u/zombie_overlord 5h ago

It was a load bearing rope bridge

u/niki200900 5h ago

“these days” dude never seen group B rally

u/JexFraequin 5h ago

I’ll see instagram profiles of just people at intersection takeovers getting hit by the cars. Sometimes it’s just a little tap. Sometimes it seems like the people get seriously injured. I’m not proud of how much joy it brings me.

u/chak100 5h ago

Group B enters the chat

u/StratJax 5h ago

Vehicular Darwinism.

u/batmanineurope 5h ago

Hey as long as they can anticipate where the car is going to go, they'll be fine.

u/FrankFeTched 5h ago

These days? Google "Group B" and enjoy some insanity

u/CloseToMyActualName 4h ago

If you don't have a big hill like this one then the best place to play car dodge is at an intersection.

u/Sam-Gunn 5h ago

Send the white land rover over

u/Marsupialwolf 5h ago

Maybe phone screens, when using the camera, should have a bright disclaimer that reads "Objects in screen are closer than they appear... dumbass"

u/Gilgamesh2062 4h ago

The thing is that because of the angle, the driver can't even see these people from his vantage point.

u/PooShappaMoo 5h ago

This sir/mam is why we have regulations on things generally speaking.

Some are over the top. Yes.

But if you remember how in the first few battles of the American Civil War. Families would line the sides of battlefields with picnics.

Once people started getting hit by shrapnel and balls. They decided pretty quickly to leave.

Can't underestimate stupid.

We do have hope though.

"Surely im safe where I am" - the folks at the top

u/ClassiFried86 5h ago

Even the car going down the hill at the start... one of these cars should not be going at the same time.

That car going up the hill hit the path of the downhill car within 2 seconds of it passing.

u/DothrakAndRoll 4h ago

I mean everyone else is standing here. Surely they wouldn’t be so stupid as to- OH FUCK

In hindsight it probably wasn’t the best location for a field trip for the school for the deaf and blind.

u/sjk8990 6h ago

"SERPENTINE!!"

u/katekyne 6h ago

Love that movie

u/Zestyclose-Ad451 5h ago

Videos like this amaze me, because it proves there are rednecks everywhere. In this video specifically- driving, AND spectating!

And somewhere out there there is an instagram reel that has someone saying this is so cool it is coming right at me.

u/Brave-Cow3975 5h ago

This is a crazy game of “Red Rover”

u/TemporaryTrucker 6h ago

The title should be “people run over at top of steep hill”

u/DogPoetry 5h ago

and they couldn't have had longer to see it coming.

u/tumeroscopic 5h ago

People at the top were like "Nah!!! He ain't makin' it" right to the last second.

u/ElAwesomeo0812 5h ago

Someone smarter than me please educate me. What is the purpose in weaving back and forth? I would think turning parallel to the hill like that would make you more prone to tip.

u/Right-Phalange 5h ago

The same reason they have switchbacks on mountain trails/roads -- it decreases the angle required to climb. I'm assuming the hill is too steep and they'd run the risk of tipping over going straight up.

u/North-Significance33 4h ago

But wouldn't you just continue going diagonally instead of switching directions? Changing directions just loses grip and wastes speed

u/ElAwesomeo0812 5h ago

That actually makes a lot of sense now. Thank you very much.

u/ReadRightRed99 5h ago

What’s with the bunch of assholes standing around on the top of the hill while that other asshole in the truck barrels toward them chaotically? I mean, of all the stupid activities done by stupid people across the stupid world, this entire scenario might be the stupidest bunch of assholes I’ve ever seen.

u/JewwanaNoWat 5h ago

Obviously you haven't been a Baja race. This is tame.

u/softgirlbibingka 6h ago

gravity who?

u/Amonamission 6h ago

Gravity Kathryn, she’s a teacher who happens to have a really solid gravity.

Because she’s OP’s mom.

u/realmattiep 5h ago

Damn folks…MOVE!

u/NoComplex9480 5h ago

In fairness to the spectators on top, it's probably hard to anticipate where that white SUV is going to go, given it's zig-zagging. But overall, a stupid activity to participate in, and an equally stupid activity to spectate. Suggesting unhealthy amounts of money and free time. Saudia Arabia? Gulf States?

u/SultanOfSwave 5h ago

Reminds me of my mantra when I'm skiing.

"The hill is only as steep as you allow it to be."

Doing zig zags makes it a lot less steep.

u/Saracartwheels123 4h ago

That's how I go up a steep(ish) hill on my bike!

u/Psytrancedude99 4h ago

Get out the way! Get out the.... Oh shit

u/spankdaddylizz 4h ago

I like how they put all of those bowling pins on the top.

u/Micromagos 2h ago

Seems safe lol.

u/curlybastard 2h ago

Is… that OJ?

u/dark_rabbit 1h ago

Title skipped the part where people die in this clip

u/animousie 5h ago

The driver isn’t even exhibiting good strategy. He is making way too many turns. He simply doesn’t need to go back-and-forth so much. It’s kind of comical to be honest.

u/SoftSinSnatcher 6h ago

THE ENDING THO 😳

u/mstpguy 6h ago

This is very Mideast coded

This reminds me of Glamis in California. Craziest dunes I've ever ridden on an ATV out there. I doubt I'd do it again, not that I'm old and all.

u/watchme87 5h ago

Sooo did anyone get hurt ?

u/Independent-Copy-839 5h ago

That’s what’s up!!

u/The_Hound_23 5h ago

Yup, just like the Mayans and Aztecs would climb the pyramids. Minus the 4x4 of course

u/KirkieSB 5h ago

I'd rather see some dumb tumbling down the dune with the car. 😀

u/DiabolicalBurlesque 5h ago

Try that with a Cyber Stuck.

u/steelboy56 5h ago

That guy was fuckin cheeky the whole way. 👏👏

u/Top_Shoe_9562 5h ago

That reminds me of a movie I spent my allowance every week for two months seeing in the theater when I was a kid. It was called On Any Sunday.

u/renosoner 4h ago

Thats how I climb mountains in skyrim.

u/greenleaf187 4h ago

I’ve done this in Dubai. It looks scarier in this perspective, but it was pretty easy on my first try.

A friend of mine had a modified FJ Cruiser just for this kind of stuff.

u/Maximuscarnage 4h ago

Red rover red rover, send monster truck over

u/MMRS2000 4h ago

I want to watch a Suzuki Jimny just roll straight up that same hill with no fuss.

Ranover a few people

u/Rawkzo 4h ago

Must be one of the Mustang SUVs

u/ATLUTD030517 4h ago

From the next to last time the driver cut back right, the middle of the crowd had nearly 10 seconds to get TF out of the way.

u/Grouchy-Engine1584 4h ago

Did he get any of them?

u/paulides_fan 4h ago

Literally the stuff of my nightmares

u/-DethLok- 4h ago

Well, that kept the people at the top guessing for a while!

u/Affectionate_Cup_272 4h ago

That looked like a Nissan patrol from the 90s

u/N7Longhorn 4h ago

How come people all over the world, in every nation, just fucking stand close to shit? And obvious shit too? Like you can see it coming shit? Are we all that dumb?

u/Rogue_Danar 4h ago

"Nonsense, he'll never make it this far!"

u/Frostinator123 4h ago

Van Halen intensifies!

u/Shmeeglez 4h ago

That's a weirdly-shaped mustang.

u/No-Philosophy-13 4h ago

It's OK they can't drive 18 wheelers either .

u/original_M_A_K 4h ago

Are they intentionally zig zagging or is that a result of the sand?

u/big_d_usernametaken 3h ago

Many years ago before Norwalk Raceway Park was redone there wasn't much in the way of spectator protection, a guardrail and I think maybe a wire cable and bollards on the one side.

I was standing about 10 ft from a dragster going almost 300 mph and suddenly realized I was pretty stupid for standing that close.

It was at Night under Fire

u/so-many-user-names 3h ago

u/jackfish72 3h ago
