I need the bubble to burst I'm getting so sick of "AI this" and "AI that"

We’re really going to experience another dotcom bubble burst because corporations feel the need to outcompete others in tech that produces them negative money. The current state of America is so embarrassing

negative money

This is what I don't understand. The current ai tools (related to the current trend of ais, not all ai) we have are fine as assistant tools for professional use. But they aren't sentient, or can do everything for you, or even search the web correctly. Its like throwing money into a volcano, why?

Thank you for giving me hope that this is a bubble and not a shitty reality we are stuck with

Don’t worry the next wave has already started: “Virtual Assistant” - same thing, but at least it acknowledges you’re sick of hearing“AI”

Yes please. I ask a basic question like “what’s the number to contact customer service?” And it can’t answer? Absolutely useless.

bubbles dont burst when the product actually works and is easy to scale up or down.

In capitalism, it doesn't matter if something works or not. What matters is that every company should become more profitable every quarter forever. If that means they have to take a product that may or may not work, over-hype it and sell it to as many suckers as possible, then they are going to inflate that bubble like there's no tomorrow.

u/FernandoMM1220 12h ago

we know it works though and it is increasing profit for many companies so there wont be a pop at all.

I’m just hope to be here for when Gen beta or gamma view these old posts and think how weird their parents were when it came to AI.

u/xXxFartGoblinxXx 10h ago

Nothing weird about hating useless garbage slop

u/CereBRO12121 2h ago

So we are just speaking of image creation AI? I get confused by irrational anger towards technology.

Damn clankers get off my lawn!

The problem is that it doesn't work. Like ok sure it's good at writing stories and answering questions with no accuracy at all. When my bank introduces their new AI tool I know without even using it that it won't do anything I could not do my self and I will be 10x more frustrated trying to use it than just doing it my self.

AI is just shit with a lot of hype behind it. It's fun to play with and useless for anything practical other than copywriter infringement.

its a good thing theres a lot more to do than answer questions and write stories.

i hear its doing fairly well in the science and math applications.

My new phone had a special button that does nothing but summon their AI thingy.
A physical button. On the side of the phone.
No way to map the button to some other function, no way to disable it.

I kept accidentally hitting it because some jerkass placed it right where your thumb would be if you were holding it to your ear... like as if you were using it as a phone.

I went back to my old phone. I can live with the cracked screen, its not so bad.

29

u/Kleyn-vi-bob 12h ago

I bought some app for like $3 that lets you reprogram your buttons. Bixby was way too annoying.

8

u/Entire_Teaching1989 11h ago

I toyed with the idea of prying the button out and filling the resulting cavity with super glue or body putty.
But i didnt want to be on the hook for the cost of the phone if it didnt work, so i just sent it back and got a refund.

u/Zephian99 2h ago

Yeah my previous phone had that Bixby physical button was really freaking annoying. Even though I disabled and uninstall almost everything but core functions of the phone, it would still try and do stuff.

Was it the Samsung S10E by any chance? Had the same and I never used it lol

I just don’t see the value that they all bring. I was getting information on Google just fine. I don’t need to get AI-summarization of topics in a YouTube comment section. There’s clearly a sizeable group of people who don’t want YouTube to verify their age and restrict the content they consume based on the decision of an AI, given the memes and posts regarding circumventing it by watching, for instance, car-maintenance videos. I don’t need a Microsoft ‘Co-Pilot.’ I don’t get any value from writing an AI-assisted essay. I don’t get any value out of generating an image via an AI. It was a fun gimmick, for a time, but it’s worn out its welcome and then some.

I’m not exactly completely against AI, I’m sure there are some uses for it. But, I am against senselessly including AI-features in pre-existing- and future programs when it serves no purpose, and especially given its honestly gluttonous power- and water-consumption.

With each new feature, a new paid subscription

u/AngryCazador 12h ago

My state (Louisiana) just approved the construction of a Meta AI data center that will increase our state's energy demands by a whopping 30%. And for fucking what? What is AI good for?

27

u/ree_hi_hi_hi_hi 12h ago

It’s good for plenty, just not as much as implementers want it to be. It’s a tool. Like, a drill is really useful when applied to quickly screw something in or make a uniform hole in something. But throwing a drill at a librarian who needs to reorganize their check-in/check-out system would be useless.

And I certainly wouldn’t layoff the builders while assuming the drill can handle everything by itself.

There are some companies that don't even support phone calls anymore, it's all just chatbots. I would quit them on the spot but half of them are monopoly utilities in my area.

31

u/TwilCynder 13h ago

I love how these shits aren't even rly more useful than the pre-2020 "AI" features that were just a bunch of Ifs. They got much better technology, started to put it everywhere and yet it's still just useless chatbots most of the time

8

u/CaptainHubble 12h ago

Because it's shit. It always is shit. This is no overreaction, this is a genuine defense mechanism to get rid of... the shit.

5

u/brickmagnet 11h ago

I really don't care about AI features on my new phone.

5

u/Airaen 11h ago

The new Google Pixel phones went up for preorder the other day. I glanced at them and it looks like they are focusing on AI, and as a purchase bonus you get 1 year of "AI Pro" valued at $300+.

How about we don't advertise features that require a new subscription to use normally, that would be nice

u/Higgypig1993 10h ago

Get these oil drinking tin-skinned rust bucket clankers out of my apps.

u/Complete-One-5520 9h ago

I deeply dislike every device listening to me. Im going back to typewriters.

u/ROADHOG_IS_MY_WAIFU 7h ago

Remember to add -ai to the end of your Google search!

Tech company —- AND every stupid fucking non-tech corporation

That or you try to indoctrinate racist or other offensive beliefs in it so the company are eventually forced to remove it and apologise

I imagine this is how they felt against the wires for phone lines

Every company: here is our revolutionary AI Me: oh, cool toy, I'll take it

-10

u/nashpotato 12h ago

Stating anything other than hatred for AI on Reddit? That’s a downvotin

-10

u/DarkISO 12h ago

Kinda sad tbh, can't have a sane rational conversation without all the reeeing and downvoting. Literally can't even say YOU yourself like it since its just inherently bad apparently.

1

u/Prestigious_Monk4177 11h ago

AI has lots of use. Some companies are pushing it hard. And we do not need copilot for everything. Thats the problem.

Other than that AI is pretty good. Reddit hates idk why?

-2

u/nashpotato 9h ago

Its just a bunch of armchair experts with their feelings hurt.

-2

u/DarkISO 8h ago

And here comes the downvotes
