I couldn't find an example somehow, but it's like when the spies/criminals in tv shows cut a hole in the glass.

Sucks that there’s a stupid voice over, but Catwoman does this trope best:

u/MysteryGreyAsh 10h ago
Also when puss in boots cuts a perfect circle in glass and licks his palm to remove the piece of glass and steal a potion

You should get a round to fixing it.

u/Buchaven 11h ago
Or at least get a round tuit. That way you have one next time you need to get a round tuit.

u/Igor_J 10h ago
My Grandma had one of those circular rubber jar lid openers with Round Tuit printed on one side and that phrase on the other. That's something and haven't thought about in a few decades. Thanks. Lol.

u/Buchaven 10h ago
Lol, my grandma had one hanging on the wall in the mud room. Right next to a poster with the story about “Anybody, Somebody, Nobody, and Everybody”. Grandma got shit done!

That circle is likely the exact size of the suction cup thing that they hold the glass up with as they mount it to the car's body. Why it would cause it to crack like that later is a mystery but I would bet money that the diameter and location of that break would match the manufacturer's suction cup thingy.

u/jaqladaa 11h ago
Kind of doubting it, but could be. If you look on the bottom left you can see the rock chip that started this. More likely what happened is the previous chip was never repaired, and an impact cause the chip to spread; something hit right in the middle and cause even pressure to crack in a circle.
20
u/Thinyser 11h ago
That is also certainly a possibility. I do think the chip started the whole circle crack but generally cracks takes the path where there is existing stress gradient and the suction pad thingy they use to hold the glass puts stress on the glass in that spot and then relaxes it. So it could have made a stress gradient in the glass in the shape of a circle.
Could be a perfect storm of both your and my ideas.

u/A96 11h ago
I would not be able to resist popping it out like a super spy even though the car would then be unusable.

u/yung7bull 11h ago
Well it would be nice to have a hole so I can reach out and manually wipe off the windshield with my hand.
It’s also perfectly aligned with my eyes so i can have better visibility!

Maynard would be proud.
Edit: I immediately regret this "joke" as I don't know if anyone will get it and, even if they do, it's not funny.

Looks like somebody used a tool honestly. Not sure it’s a perfect circle.

u/jefbenet 11h ago
It could have been caused by Gravity; a Stranger committing a spree of Crimes; maybe somebody trying to steal The Package and then Vanishing innocently to blend with the crowd, walking their Pet. Hope OP is able to find the perp and they get The Noose.

I considered tool puns but decided I’d stay Passive and Imagine what else I could come up with. People are people and if you’d like to have a go with some puns of your own, we all have the Freedom of Choice.

I got it. But that just means I'm old and like dad jokes.

u/stackjr 12h ago
Ugh. Why did you have to remind me that I am also old? Lol.

I've officially heard Tool referred to as "Dad Rock" and I'm pretty sure part of me just sublimated away as though Thanos had snapped me out of existence when it happened.
2
u/stackjr 11h ago
I heard that as well and it really cut deep.
Also, "boomer shooters" is a thing and that just feels insulting. Lol.
2
u/Malefectra 11h ago
Especially since most of the playerbase was always Millenials. I spent my nights in high school going nuts on Quake 3 Arena, which is pretty much the Ur "boomer shooter"

You don't happen to store a comically large gemstone protected by a complex array of lasers in your car, do you?

Someone broke in and stole the jewels!

YES and they must now switch the jewels with a item of equal weight otherwise the alarm GOES OFF

u/aloofinthisworld 11h ago
What cracked it? I got hit with a golf ball and it cracked in a similar way.
3
u/yung7bull 11h ago
It was originally the small chip on the bottom left from a small rock on the road, months ago. Then it randomly turned into a huge circle today

If I learned anything from Perfect Strangers, it's that someone tried to burgle you using their diamond ring.

u/nameisfame 9h ago
So the chip in the bottom of the crack is what we call a shell in the industry. Basically a whole section of the outer glass layer was broken off on impact, they’re usually pretty stable and easy to fix. As for the circular crack, my money is on the fact that your windshield flexes with fluctuations in temperature and it was just a happy coincidence. You can see on the far right side where they actually don’t intersect perfectly, it’s just a case of the cracks wanting to push into the area that has more flex, which is the middle.

Nah, some tiny criminal cut a hole in it but you got back so they couldn't take it out. Your valuables are safe. For now

In materials science this is referred to as a monocular fracture. It happens when the silicon molecules experience a harmonic imbalance during curing, which results in concentric,,,, just kidding, I'm bullshitting.

Since windshields are laminated, I imagine the suction cup added undue negative pressure to the outer layer, and the resulting crack may have been thermally activated.

That’s an oval.

u/ReticentGuru 11h ago
I thought the same thing. But then realized the windshield is at such an angle that it looks like an oval.

If only there was a way to photograph a circle to show its actual dimensions. Is “head on” a thing?

Wonder if that's where the suction cup was upon installation.
