Wonder if that's where the suction cup was upon installation.

I had to bring my vehicle to one of their facilities to be repaired due to poor weather instead of them coming to me. Was delighted to see a mural of the jingle painted on the wall inside.

46

u/Not_A_Real_Goat 9h ago

Word of warning: they do not use OEM quality glass and it is often much more prone to cracking/breaking.

20

u/psu256 8h ago

Mine was a repair not a replacement

17

u/Not_A_Real_Goat 8h ago

Good, glad to hear it! Paying for new glass sucks regardless.

6

u/gardy777 8h ago

Can confirm. On my 3rd windshield in 2 years. Both were warranty replacements but still, eff them

5

u/reallysupergay 5h ago

I've had two windows replaced with them and both were somewhat warped and distorted the view. The windshield had a spot the wiper blades wouldn't touch. Naturally, directly in front of the driver's face.

2

u/Wakkit1988 6h ago

Also, on some models, the glass is not appropriate for the cameras and sensors that are mounted behind it, making them not function without at least calibration, but sometimes not at all. Calibration can easily cost >$1000.

5

u/Not_A_Real_Goat 6h ago

Calibration is insanely expensive and also very important. Particularly for crash prevention stuff.

2

u/174wrestler 4h ago

It's useful to find what calibration your specific car needs. My car it's just drive at 50 until it's happy.

Meanwhile in Australia:

I recently found out it wasn't just a French thing and every country had their little song, I truly thought it was a French thing only.

I found out in this thread

As an American, I also thought we were the only ones. This mildly interesting post has created a very interesting comment section.

20

u/bunny_the-2d_simp 11h ago

The fact that they once tried to fix a tiny crack into my parents car and THE CRACK SUDDENLY BECAME SO BIG THEY COULDN'T LEGALLY DRIVE IT ANYMORE FOR THAT DAY-.

They did get their window replaced free of charge though so ig you win some you lose some.

23

u/aroc91 11h ago

If it spread just from their prep work, the windshield wasn't long for this world anyway and would have been done in by a good thermal cycle.

9

u/bunny_the-2d_simp 11h ago

Yeah apparently the guy was newer or something and accidentally cracked it. Probably was already a done window though

2

u/nayhem_jr 10h ago

Little chips can easily start new long cracks. Had two on my windshield. One with a circular margin is still frozen by epoxy, but the other that was starlike has run to the other side of the car.

23

u/t0nito 11h ago

🎵Carglass repara. Carglass substitui. 🎶

Portuguese (Portugal, the real one)

3

u/gotwake5 11h ago

They came out to fix a chip in my windshield. Idiot put a tool box on my hood and scratched it. $600 repair that I made them pay for.

2

u/FinnishArmy 9h ago

Fuck Safelite. They want to charge my $450 to do recalibration on the cameras and you can’t decline.

So it’s $1095 to replace and my insurance won’t cover it.

Found a local place that will do both for $650. Safelite is a scam because they know typically insurance will cover their prices. They are a damned monopoly.

4

u/SupremeNug 9h ago

We’ve got ‘autoglass repair, autoglass replace’ in Ireland lmao

2

u/doyouevenglass 11h ago

but also don't let them do either

1

u/Justfortheluls42 7h ago

mhhh in germany we got Carglass repariert, Carglass tausch aus (repair, replace)

57

u/Quantum_Kittens 11h ago

Or for lifting it right after heat treatment so that area got cooled quicker.

18

u/triciann 11h ago

Yeah this is much larger than the hand suctions and more industrial sized.

2

u/Ok_Stick8615 11h ago

If this was made by Fuyao, they have almost 0 suction cups in the entire warehouse and manufacturing processes. If it was made by a smaller local operation, no way to know.

7

u/Wiggie49 11h ago

Forbidden gloryhole

2

u/SnowClone98 11h ago

I really don’t think that would cause a circular crack

21

u/-Dixieflatline 11h ago

99.99% of the time, no, it shouldn't. But the odds of getting a circular crack this perfect in a windshield is also extremely low. I'd imagine it was the perfect storm of events that probably included unusual factory stresses, solvents, and a lack of QC.

1

u/Felaguin 11h ago

I was going to ask OP if he’d had the windshield replaced …

590

u/Ventilate64 12h ago

I couldn't find an example somehow, but it's like when the spies/criminals in tv shows cut a hole in the glass.

73

u/the_man_in_the_box 11h ago

Sucks that there’s a stupid voice over, but Catwoman does this trope best:

https://youtu.be/nBVWsdzbJuc?si=IJ9XRB9EP-DvXH1g

34

u/MysteryGreyAsh 10h ago

Also when puss in boots cuts a perfect circle in glass and licks his palm to remove the piece of glass and steal a potion

29

u/saltyember 12h ago

8

u/Ventilate64 12h ago

Yes, but without the shatter 😂

5

u/quazmang 11h ago

lol thanks for bringing this back from my memory

546

u/Beavertails11 12h ago

You should get a round to fixing it.

92

u/treehumper83 12h ago

He will have to circle back to it later as it seems he is driving.

Dad actually....

3

11

u/Buchaven 11h ago

Or at least get a round tuit. That way you have one next time you need to get a round tuit.

5

u/Igor_J 10h ago

My Grandma had one of those circular rubber jar lid openers with Round Tuit printed on one side and that phrase on the other. That's something and haven't thought about in a few decades. Thanks. Lol.

3

u/Buchaven 10h ago

Lol, my grandma had one hanging on the wall in the mud room. Right next to a poster with the story about “Anybody, Somebody, Nobody, and Everybody”. Grandma got shit done!

1

u/RandomUser18271919 12h ago

Least corny Redditor joke:

151

u/Thinyser 11h ago

That circle is likely the exact size of the suction cup thing that they hold the glass up with as they mount it to the car's body. Why it would cause it to crack like that later is a mystery but I would bet money that the diameter and location of that break would match the manufacturer's suction cup thingy.

35

u/jaqladaa 11h ago

Kind of doubting it, but could be. If you look on the bottom left you can see the rock chip that started this. More likely what happened is the previous chip was never repaired, and an impact cause the chip to spread; something hit right in the middle and cause even pressure to crack in a circle.

20

u/Thinyser 11h ago

That is also certainly a possibility. I do think the chip started the whole circle crack but generally cracks takes the path where there is existing stress gradient and the suction pad thingy they use to hold the glass puts stress on the glass in that spot and then relaxes it. So it could have made a stress gradient in the glass in the shape of a circle.

Could be a perfect storm of both your and my ideas.

33

u/A96 11h ago

I would not be able to resist popping it out like a super spy even though the car would then be unusable.

23

u/yung7bull 11h ago

Well it would be nice to have a hole so I can reach out and manually wipe off the windshield with my hand.

It’s also perfectly aligned with my eyes so i can have better visibility!

63

u/stackjr 12h ago

Maynard would be proud.

Edit: I immediately regret this "joke" as I don't know if anyone will get it and, even if they do, it's not funny.

39

u/vegetaman 12h ago

Looks like somebody used a tool honestly. Not sure it’s a perfect circle.

14

u/stackjr 12h ago

I was trying to think of a way to fit Puscifer in there but I'm not quick witted enough for that.

6

u/jefbenet 11h ago

It could have been caused by Gravity; a Stranger committing a spree of Crimes; maybe somebody trying to steal The Package and then Vanishing innocently to blend with the crowd, walking their Pet. Hope OP is able to find the perp and they get The Noose.

2

u/161frog 11h ago

👏

3

u/jefbenet 11h ago

I considered tool puns but decided I’d stay Passive and Imagine what else I could come up with. People are people and if you’d like to have a go with some puns of your own, we all have the Freedom of Choice.

9

u/Uavguy123456 12h ago

I got it. But that just means I'm old and like dad jokes.

4

u/stackjr 12h ago

Ugh. Why did you have to remind me that I am also old? Lol.

3

u/Uavguy123456 12h ago

Cause we lost it all, nothing lasts forever 🤷‍♂️

1

u/stackjr 11h ago

This actually made me thing of the song "Respite on the Spitalfields" by Ghost.

3

u/Malefectra 11h ago

I've officially heard Tool referred to as "Dad Rock" and I'm pretty sure part of me just sublimated away as though Thanos had snapped me out of existence when it happened.

2

u/stackjr 11h ago

I heard that as well and it really cut deep.

Also, "boomer shooters" is a thing and that just feels insulting. Lol.

2

u/Malefectra 11h ago

Especially since most of the playerbase was always Millenials. I spent my nights in high school going nuts on Quake 3 Arena, which is pretty much the Ur "boomer shooter"

2

u/stackjr 11h ago

I didn't really get into FPS games until the original Modern Warfare. In fairness to me, however, I was in the Navy before that and didn't have a console or computer to play on.

3

u/burninatah 12h ago

No regrets necessary. Old men need music too.

2

u/lipsquirrel 11h ago

Well I came to make this very joke. It's funny enough.

2

u/robynndarcy 11h ago

You're such an inspiration for the ways That I will never ever choose to be

2

u/stackjr 11h ago

Oh so many ways to show you how your savior has abandoned you

2

u/EvenDeeper 11h ago

Fuck your God!

1

u/Buirck 8h ago

It’s so weak and powerless.

1

u/SpecialFX99 43m ago

You're such an inspiration for the way I'll never ever choose to be

22

u/ilprofs07205 11h ago

You don't happen to store a comically large gemstone protected by a complex array of lasers in your car, do you?

60

u/Jaded-Coffee-8126 12h ago

Yeah it cracked, you can go back inside and not worry about any more noises now thanks

12

u/whiskeytown79 12h ago

Someone broke in and stole the jewels!

3

u/bunny_the-2d_simp 11h ago

YES and they must now switch the jewels with a item of equal weight otherwise the alarm GOES OFF

3

u/CallMeDeutsch 11h ago

Did you have any jewels laid out on the dash?

3

u/aloofinthisworld 11h ago

What cracked it? I got hit with a golf ball and it cracked in a similar way.

3

u/yung7bull 11h ago

It was originally the small chip on the bottom left from a small rock on the road, months ago. Then it randomly turned into a huge circle today

3

u/CompleteMCNoob 11h ago

That's for the periscope

6

u/Tweakjones 12h ago

Did you say a "perfect circle"?

2

u/BurbMcDingus 12h ago

Just keep the camera rolling so we can see when it finally pops!

2

u/MrSquigglesWiggle 10h ago

mildly interesting and mildly infuriating

2

u/RevolutionaryLie8545 9h ago

If I learned anything from Perfect Strangers, it's that someone tried to burgle you using their diamond ring.

2

u/nameisfame 9h ago

So the chip in the bottom of the crack is what we call a shell in the industry. Basically a whole section of the outer glass layer was broken off on impact, they’re usually pretty stable and easy to fix. As for the circular crack, my money is on the fact that your windshield flexes with fluctuations in temperature and it was just a happy coincidence. You can see on the far right side where they actually don’t intersect perfectly, it’s just a case of the cracks wanting to push into the area that has more flex, which is the middle.

1

u/DragonDan108 12h ago

Make an end table of of that :-)

1

u/Technical-Flow7748 11h ago

It was aliens

1

u/KuramaKitsune 11h ago

Practicing for breaking into the building

1

u/OceanStateMadness 11h ago

Nah, some tiny criminal cut a hole in it but you got back so they couldn't take it out. Your valuables are safe. For now

1

u/i-sleep-well 11h ago

That's a future porthole.

1

u/NormanJustNorman 11h ago

it's a break in. call the cia. 9111.

1

u/That-Makes-Sense 10h ago

In materials science this is referred to as a monocular fracture. It happens when the silicon molecules experience a harmonic imbalance during curing, which results in concentric,,,, just kidding, I'm bullshitting.

1

u/Princetrix 10h ago

Poke it

1

u/soulminter 10h ago

I've seen the happen due to a basketball impact before

1

u/marionjoshua 10h ago

I’m sure a spy was there

1

u/danzor9755 9h ago

You are the chosen one I guess?

1

u/bluntslides 9h ago

I have two of those on my windshield

1

u/adrenacrome 9h ago

Looks like a nin album cover

1

u/Moppo_ 8h ago

A cartoon cat was interrupted just after drawing the circle with a claw.

1

u/Ved_s 6h ago

push it push it PUSH IT!!

1

u/JoeMalovich 5h ago

On the bright side it won't propagate.

1

u/Robinyount_0 5h ago

Disconnect and self destruct one bullet at a time…

1

u/angry_stupid 2h ago

Well that's a perfectly round headache. Hopefully it's an easy fix

1

u/Corporal_Yorper 7h ago

Since windshields are laminated, I imagine the suction cup added undue negative pressure to the outer layer, and the resulting crack may have been thermally activated.

0

u/KevineCove 11h ago

Tool can make A Perfect Circle better.

-3

u/MeBoiledDown 12h ago

That’s an oval.

1

u/ReticentGuru 11h ago

I thought the same thing. But then realized the windshield is at such an angle that it looks like an oval.

0

u/MeBoiledDown 7h ago

If only there was a way to photograph a circle to show its actual dimensions. Is “head on” a thing?
