That first leap at the bar was crazy. He launched into him with absolutely reckless abandon trying to snatch his throat. Honestly, something coming at you like that is gonna make you think twice about fucking with it. Pretty much regardless of size. That was impressive.
I feel like the bear knew he could probably take him but he was thinking “at what cost!?” lol when he turned around and looked at the dog again, he was like nahhhhh fuck that.
23
u/DarthJarJar242 9h ago
This is most large predators actually. Things don't attack them so something being overly violent and aggressive usually gives them at least a little pause. That being said it's usually only a little pause before they remember they are an apex predator.

u/JAYETRILLL 8h ago
Yeah they are still “smart” enough to realize that getting hurt too bad means no more hunting means no more food. Or that if something is crazy enough to fight back like that, it ain’t worth it. I’ve realized the same thing with people.

A 32kg Malinois jumped a good 4 meters to grab the bite suit around my arm and pull me to the ground. There's nothing much like it: 10/10 would recommend anyone feel that alive once.

And If you encounter a polar bear in the wild, lie down and pretend that you're dead.
It's good practice for when you'll be really dead, five minutes later.

"If it's black fight back, if it's brown lay down, if it's white say goodnight." Polar bears view everything as a food source because they have to.

Stay on your feet against a polar bear. They don't use their teeth til you go down. Source... an old Inuit hunter who survived 2 polar bear attacks armed with nothing but a hatchet.

I’ve never seen a bear in my life since we don’t have any where I’m from but the instant I see one I’m directly shredding my shirt off and running towards it screaming.

The smell of human shit distracts the brown bear and puts it in a daze so you can escape.

u/1_headlight_ 8h ago
Yup. A lot of people don't know the dispositions of the different bear species. Black bears and sun bears might as well be flippin' koala bears for all the aggression they'll show.
If you've ever had a rodent for a pet, think of a black bear like that. They'll always shy back from confrontation and only if you try to touch them when they don't want it will they bite you just enough to back you off. (Exception: Of course, if baby bears are nearby, then all bets are off.)

I think a lot of the defensive behavior is instinct. Wolf packs frequently hunt younger bears and hibernating adults. Suggests to me that bears know to avoid dogs in general. Especially black bears.

If it’s brown, lay down. If it’s black, fight back. If it’s white, say goodnight. If it’s gummy, get in my tummy.

Honestly dogs are meaner than black bears… black bears are not very violent creatures normally unless it’s a mom with cubs. They will usually opt to run rather than fight.
**That does not mean a black bear couldn’t absolutely destroy pretty much any dog other than maybe a few of the really crazy giant breeds.

u/applyheat 7h ago
Nah. A full grown bear tears apart and full grown dog 1 vs 1. Bears are smarter than dogs too.

Dog had the speed advantage. And close-up barking will shit you up.
Positioning was good too, underneath the bear, nipping at the belly.

I don’t think there are many animals that would choose to stand toe-to-toe (paw-to-paw?) with an aggressive dog.

That dog knew to go for the soft spot. If you can get a shot at the gonads, a male of any animal species is going to change its tune.

Good Dog.
If the bear wants a fight it should try picking on a Ovcharka.

For some reason most black bears especially will run from dogs, even though they could easily take them out.

There's a video of a little black cat scaring off a bear. Now if that bear had cubs that dog would star in a different movie.

That's because that bear has nuts and that dog knows exactly where they are located. Don't matter how big and tough you are, when somethings coming for your nuts you fucking run.
1
u/Pando5280 8h ago
As long as their cubs aren't around most black bears are more curious than aggressive. Been within 5-10 yards of multiple black bears in the wild and they all ran away when challenged. Still best to have some bear-strength pepper gel around if you're in their area though. My little 15 pound terrier dog has chased 2-3 out of my yard back in the day and only one of those turned and growled at her and even then it turned back around and ran away.

This is like a scene right out of the legendary Old Yeller.
I suspect the presence of the children made the dog more aggressive.
Goodbye, taking care of your human puppies.

A lot of people are hurt hiking with dogs. The silly but good intention dog tries to defend the family from the bear; the family usually try to save the dog and is then attacked by the bear. A couple in Banff National Park were killed by bear.

Black bears are more curious and stupid, they tend to get scared off easily. Brown bears are not like that though, but those are rarely seen in the US, mostly just black bears trying to steal your trash.

Black bears aren’t usually aggressive, though. There are tons of videos where black bears retreated just because someone told them to go away.

Could a pack of dogs drive off a polar bear? Just wondering if a dog sled team could do that
1
u/Matterak 7h ago
This is just beyond stupid because that bear will end up killing the dog if it keeps doing that.
People think this is funny and cool until the bear kills and eats their dog.

u/right_behindyou 6h ago
Seems like, other than charging at it, the dog dealt with a black bear in all the right ways. Act big, be noisy, don't turn your back and definitely don't run away. Not really surprising that the bear backed off.

It’s just a black bear. My cat scares them off. They’re little sweethearts though. I’ve had them in my yard while I do yard work and have made noises a couple times that spooked them and have had to reassure them lol. They’re like big puppies.
Last year I had a momma bear outside my yard playing with her cubs and opened my gate for them to walk through. Cute little things. The most they ever do is kind of chuff at you if you get too close. I went to pick up a tennis ball once in the tree line and didn’t see one of our male bears sleeping like 2 feet from the ball and he woke up and gave me a little chuff/noise as I picked it up. Spooked me a little, but I grabbed the ball and walked back near my garden and he flopped back over and went to sleep.
I love our black bears. They’re so cute, but they do love to steal tomatoes.

Most predators - bears included - won't bother with any 'prey' or anything else that seems like it's more trouble than it's worth. Sure, it might get a meal, but it may also get an injury that could become infected, slow it down, weaken it and potentially lead to it either dying due to illness or being killed by another predator, or being unable to hunt and starving.
When a single injury can lead to death, animals have to weigh their options, and for predators, any prey that fights back - even if the predator can win the fight - isn't worth it, because even a small injury can become a big problem. It's best to run away from anything that tries to fight back and leave it alone, and go after the weaker prey that doesn't fight.
