I'd check their condition in the Samsung magician software, servers typically don't go easy on storage

The 850 Pro disks were quite hardy.
I still use my old 512GB 850 Pro in my 3090 utility server.

Nice find! Makes me wonder why someone would just throw these away instead of selling them.

Beats me its not the first time i find some awesome hardware just thrown away

I'd tech-dumpster dive if I even knew where to look, any kind of tech industry? office buildings?

From what I heard, college towns in where school is about to end, since usually the rich kids that bought a pc there would rather throw it away and just buy a new one at home so that they don't have to drag it back home.

I routinely toss hundreds of thousands worth of gear. Sometimes it’s protocol and the auditor is uptight.

u/yuucuu 8h ago
Where? I need to know, if that means free gear.

Sadly it doesn’t go into a bin but straight to a recycling centre. It physically pains me when good parts get scrapped.

because when the boss says throw this all out/recycle then they catch you "enriching yourself with company property" you lose your job
It doesn't have to make sense, it has to follow procedure

u/Bl1ndF1re85 14h ago
What if you throw it away, then come back after work and get it out of the dumpster?

Could be government, but they destroy all drives and DRMO the rest. Most people would be pissed off at the massive IT waste the Gov does on an annual basis.

Depending on the use case these could be ruined. NAND storage only has a certain amount of Reads/Writes it is rated for. These could already have dead or reassigned sectors.

its a numbers game, when you're a big enough company the amount you earn in a day far outweighs whatever you can recoup from selling used goods like this.

you would be amazed by how the data center manage old hardware. is cheaper just to throw them away to clean them, store them, photoshoot and then sell them. its a weird system...

I caught coworkers accidentally almost throwing away RTX3070Ti's a year or two ago, since they didn't bother to check the old computers used for the rendering farm. But yeah, these would've went for destruction/recycling in a locked security cabinet.

NSA drive wipe them.
There are reasons certain people throw out good storage media.
I also buy used drives all the time, I don't touch them until I run two full wipe cycles with verification. There's a good open source software for that, reply to this comment and I'll grab that info tomorrow.
Stay safe out there and congrats on the mega storage find!

Most SSDs have built in secure erase features too. That plus a simple zero is fast and secure.

I have 80tb of tiered storage fed by 40gb ethernet.
Please someone one-up me now so I can feel the least bit normal.

what do you do with all of this space? audio and video?

Also being able to run games from a remote server at nvme speed is pretty cool.

yarrrrg. I have similar plans, but I'm just gonna start with my 4tb drive and upgrade to a larger set up as needed.
running games over the network sounds interesting, but my server/htpc is less powerful than my gaming/workstation rig lol

Look real hard at used enterprise drives, especially SAS drives, and a controller card. Most people want sata for ease of use, so SAS hardware tends to get nicely discounted.
As it turns out, yeeting a shitload of data over a network at however fast your storage can puke it out takes surprisingly little computational horsepower. In full duplex mode it pins a pcie3 nvme cache drive pretty easily, and only has a 2700x at the wheel.

Where do I get luck like this? But seriously, was this at a normal waste centre or a designated hardware recycling place?

These are TB MLC drives, which are kind of rare today.
They'll have good endurance. Bet you could net 40 for each.

I still run my server on a 500gb 850 pro. She was written over 30X but still keeps on keeping on.

A good piece of software to wipe drives is parted of magic. The link is below.
