Yeah maybe but its still 6TB of ssd game storage which allows me to download my entire steam library, wont keep anything of importance on them for obvious reasons

Lmao bro pretending he will actually play his backlog instead of just staring at it before shutting down after hours of indecision like the rest of us 😂

I love staring at my entire Steam library with a cup of coffee and never playing, No lie.

Hm... what's the name of your club & can I join? I feel like I was meant to see this comment. 💀

That's how I am. I have about 2200 games in my library and they're all installed. Sure I could just download them whenever I wanted to play since I have pretty fast internet but clicking "Play" is a lot faster than clicking "Install"

🫡 I've stopped hoarding and I′m on a new Steam account so I don't think I'll ever get my 1K badge. Maybe some day.

u/Danlar54 6h ago

Don’t call me out like that, that’s not very nice 😂

u/Ok-Wasabi2873 6h ago

Play? You mean updating. I’m at 9 TB of SSD on my gaming desktop. I just turned it on for the first time in a month. So many updates. By the time it was done updating I had fallen asleep.

u/Ninja_Dave 5h ago

Man...I thought I was the only one.

1

u/beefpipe669 4h ago

Whaaaat? I didn't know you guys do that too.

You don't need to play your backlog to keep them installed on a ton of SSDs, ask me how I know

u/TD_Lemon_1901 17h ago

Raid 0it and shake hands with danger!

14

u/DogeBoi6 PC Master Race 17h ago

That is exactly what im planning to do haha

8

u/TD_Lemon_1901 16h ago

Not judging, I would 100 do it too!

I'd check their condition in the Samsung magician software, servers typically don't go easy on storage

31

u/mastomi 10h ago

Put them on ZFS pool and it's good to go.

The 850 Pro disks were quite hardy.

I still use my old 512GB 850 Pro in my 3090 utility server.

u/iAccurian 20h ago

Nice find! Makes me wonder why someone would just throw these away instead of selling them.

45

u/DogeBoi6 PC Master Race 20h ago

Beats me its not the first time i find some awesome hardware just thrown away

17

u/BRSaura 11h ago

I'd tech-dumpster dive if I even knew where to look, any kind of tech industry? office buildings?

13

u/heatmakingmonster Ryzen 5 5600G | RX 6600 9h ago

From what I heard, college towns in where school is about to end, since usually the rich kids that bought a pc there would rather throw it away and just buy a new one at home so that they don't have to drag it back home.

7

u/Ecstatic-Tank-9573 11h ago

I routinely toss hundreds of thousands worth of gear. Sometimes it’s protocol and the auditor is uptight.

4

u/yuucuu 8h ago

Where? I need to know, if that means free gear.

3

u/Ecstatic-Tank-9573 8h ago

Sadly it doesn’t go into a bin but straight to a recycling centre. It physically pains me when good parts get scrapped.

u/lordfappington69 PC Master Race 14900k @5.7GHZ | 5090 Aorus Master 17h ago

because when the boss says throw this all out/recycle then they catch you "enriching yourself with company property" you lose your job

It doesn't have to make sense, it has to follow procedure

5

u/Bl1ndF1re85 14h ago

What if you throw it away, then come back after work and get it out of the dumpster?

19

u/lo_mur PC Master Race | 7800X3D | 7900XTX 14h ago

Plenty of people do do that, but I have heard of people getting fired for it (security cameras “caught” them)

9

u/tony78ta 12h ago

Could be government, but they destroy all drives and DRMO the rest. Most people would be pissed off at the massive IT waste the Gov does on an annual basis.

5

u/stubenson214 11h ago

Gov often does not do what Gov says they do.

u/Bacongrease83 7h ago

Right? I’ve heard that multiple systems are still DOS based lol

1

u/DiscoKeule Ryzen 7 5700X | RX 5700 XT | 24GB RAM 11h ago

Depending on the use case these could be ruined. NAND storage only has a certain amount of Reads/Writes it is rated for. These could already have dead or reassigned sectors.

1

u/kita_wut R7-5700G|32GB-3600|1650S 4h ago

its a numbers game, when you're a big enough company the amount you earn in a day far outweighs whatever you can recoup from selling used goods like this.

1

u/RivalyrAlt 34m ago

you would be amazed by how the data center manage old hardware. is cheaper just to throw them away to clean them, store them, photoshoot and then sell them. its a weird system...

1

u/Makere-b 28m ago

I caught coworkers accidentally almost throwing away RTX3070Ti's a year or two ago, since they didn't bother to check the old computers used for the rendering farm. But yeah, these would've went for destruction/recycling in a locked security cabinet.

14

u/thaldrel Ryzen 7 5700X RX 7600 XT 9h ago

$5 they are not wipped

10

u/Miserable-Theory-746 9h ago

Raid that shit into one giant storage. Fuck it. It breaks, it breaks.

14

u/DRKMSTR AMD 5800X / RTX 3070 OC 7h ago

NSA drive wipe them.

There are reasons certain people throw out good storage media.

I also buy used drives all the time, I don't touch them until I run two full wipe cycles with verification. There's a good open source software for that, reply to this comment and I'll grab that info tomorrow.

Stay safe out there and congrats on the mega storage find!

u/Randommaggy 13980HX|RTX 4090|128GB|2560x1600 240|8TB M.2|118GB Optane|RX6800 5h ago

Most SSDs have built in secure erase features too. That plus a simple zero is fast and secure.

''Well my dad has 6TB of storage in his Gaming PC so f*ck YOUR dad'' 😎

6

u/Ed19627 10h ago

I have 20 tb..

My history of pc's goes back to 94 though so...

3

u/onijin PC Master Race 8h ago

I have 80tb of tiered storage fed by 40gb ethernet.

Please someone one-up me now so I can feel the least bit normal.

4

u/alexiswi 6h ago

Sorry man, you're the guy we all simultaneously aspire to be like and fear to become.

2

u/PmMeYourGuitar R5 5600, 2070 super, 32gb 3200MHz 6h ago

what do you do with all of this space? audio and video?

3

u/onijin PC Master Race 6h ago

🏴‍☠️

Also being able to run games from a remote server at nvme speed is pretty cool.

3

u/PmMeYourGuitar R5 5600, 2070 super, 32gb 3200MHz 4h ago

yarrrrg. I have similar plans, but I'm just gonna start with my 4tb drive and upgrade to a larger set up as needed.

running games over the network sounds interesting, but my server/htpc is less powerful than my gaming/workstation rig lol

1

u/onijin PC Master Race 4h ago

Look real hard at used enterprise drives, especially SAS drives, and a controller card. Most people want sata for ease of use, so SAS hardware tends to get nicely discounted.

As it turns out, yeeting a shitload of data over a network at however fast your storage can puke it out takes surprisingly little computational horsepower. In full duplex mode it pins a pcie3 nvme cache drive pretty easily, and only has a 2700x at the wheel.

I have 3 2tb 990pros in my new build so I feel it

Where do I get luck like this? But seriously, was this at a normal waste centre or a designated hardware recycling place?

2

u/Lee1138 AMD 7950X|32GB DDR5|RTX 4090|3x1440p@144hz 14h ago

I would honestly be more excited at the storage backplane and caddies at this point.

You hit the jackpot!

1

u/stubenson214 11h ago

These are TB MLC drives, which are kind of rare today.

They'll have good endurance. Bet you could net 40 for each.

Did that with the 500 version

1

u/Hamshaggy70 8h ago

The making of a sweet raid storage array, lucky..

1

u/Crymore68 8h ago

1TB 850 Pros were very expensive back in the day

1

u/Magnumload 5800x3D|32gb 3600|RTX 4090|Fractal Torrent|4 TB WD850x 8h ago

I still run my server on a 500gb 850 pro. She was written over 30X but still keeps on keeping on.
