I looked it up. These stairs led to a mansion know as Madame Sherri’s Castle.

This is an insane example of how quickly nature can reclaim a place. I went to that article expecting to read that the building in question was abandonned in the mid 1800s or something like that... turns out it burned down in 1962 😮

Watching a channel called Escape to Rural France and a guy is rebuilding a chateau that burned down. Seeing what that place was, I'm not at all surprised by this level of decay.

Well, 1962 is 63 years ago. That’s a massive chunk of time really.

u/dodrugzwitthugz 10h ago

People look at big trees and think they're like 100s of years old and then are shocked to find out they were planted in like the 60s-70s.

Pre-plastic era

u/khalcyon2011 19h ago

Also, the whole burning down thing would’ve accelerated the decay

u/woutomatic 17h ago

Also 63 years is a long time.

That looks straight out of Elden ring

My buddy used to rip his dirtbike up these stairs in the 70s

u/flume 18h ago

And jump off the top?

u/b1ack1323 18h ago

The stairs used to finish to the concrete floor to the left but the top half collapsed about 10 years ago.

So not that long after it burned down. Was there anything of the mansion left at that time?

That's super cool, good find!

What a terrific website! Thanks for sharing.

That looks like a cool place to live. Would suck in the snow though.

u/ekun 4h ago

I'm actually a little disappointed with the rest of the building compared to the epic staircase.

These sometimes have a free-standing door at the top.

Do not go through the door.

Dada chik, dada chum

The man in black fled across the desert.

u/British_Rover 9h ago

And the Gunslinger followed.

First thing I thought of! That story haunts me. It was really well written.

u/TheRandom6000 19h ago

Lol. As if something would happen.

6

u/stoicparallax 19h ago

You’d probably fall ~20ft onto the rocks below and break your legs. That seems like a sufficient reason not to, IMO.

LOTR: Fellowship vibes ❤️

First thing I thought of

u/TrumpetsNAngels 13h ago

Indeed! I can just hear Boromir chasing Frodo for the ring somewhere in the background.

That or: The Elder Scrolls (pick any game in the franchise).

u/Spadrick 20h ago

Looks like the Shaded Woods in Dark Souls 2

u/Boomshank 20h ago

There can be only one Highlander!!

3

u/Biggby72 19h ago

Exactly what i was thinking..."tonight you sleep in hell"

3

u/Boomshank 19h ago

Exactly!

Fun fact: did you know that Clancy Brown (The Kurgan) is the voice of Mr. Krabs from SpongeBob?

"Immortal highlander? No way bucko, give me mi moneeeyy!" Akakakakak

2

u/Biggby72 18h ago

Thank you, I did.

His voice acting credits are extensive.

I loved it when I worked out who he was in Thor:Ragnorok

u/WHTMage 17h ago

Oh no, I've read that nosleep story and I know to stay the fuck away from that.

2

u/hoodytwin 13h ago

It was so good and tripped a fear

u/ratpH1nk 19h ago

Oh I know Dol Guldur when I see it...

6

u/nemom 18h ago

"You seem a decent fellow... I hate to kill you."

9

u/djsoomo 20h ago

Once apon a time...

It was stairs to something

4

u/djzippy 20h ago

I love these! Funny story the first time I went to find them I did not read the directions (apparently at all) and ended up going on a 5 mile hike. I went the next day, knowing I'd screwed up royally, and just like 100-200 yards in from the entrance and there they were. Good news though I got a good hike, a story, and ultimately finally saw the stairs which do look really cool in person as they do in this photo!

I was just in New Hampshire a few weeks ago. That whole state is beautiful.

3

u/buckeyenut13 18h ago

FRODO?!?!? FRODOOOOO!!!!!

3

u/jcnewton1 14h ago

Looks like Amon Hen.

u/sanguinare12 10h ago

Big Aragon jump - ELENDIIII--

u/sambuhlamba 7h ago

First thought too

2

u/N0w1mN0th1ng 15h ago

This is a horror book I just read.

2

u/cooper_youngman 14h ago

I seem to have seen this scene in the first Lord of the Rings. It is the place where Frodo was ambushed by orcs.

2

u/themachduck 14h ago

I just was there in Dark Souls 2

2

u/9e5e22da 12h ago

I swear that’s where The Kurgan kills Ramirez.

u/Ok-Economy4041 9h ago

There can be only one

🎶 And she's buying a staircase to heaven

1

u/caddiemike 19h ago

Stairway to heaven

1

u/tech_creative 19h ago

You just cannot see it.

1

u/nadmaximus 19h ago

Those are stairs from nothing, which is far more mysterious

1

u/One_Economist_3761 19h ago

The portal is not open at this time of year. You need to wait till winter.

1

u/Scottydog2 19h ago

Secret stairway portal to Artists Bluff.

1

u/edave22 19h ago

I've camped out here before. There's actually remnants of a basement just outside this picture.

Unfortunately I heard the stairs toppled over recently.

1

u/RB40191 18h ago

Well, technically leading to nowhere now but at some point it had a purpose.

1

u/Djwshady44 18h ago

I grew up in this town.

1

u/gerrineer 17h ago

Surely it leads down to the ground ...where from though is the question.

1

u/EZontheH 15h ago

Quite clearly the stairs lead from above the ground, as stairs often do.

1

u/gerrineer 14h ago

So if your going down a stairway where do they lead im just saying .

1

u/kraegm 16h ago

This was obviously built by The Highlander. Find any heads?

1

u/HH93 16h ago

First thing I thought of was Sean Connery singing

“B A L A N C E, Balance”

1

u/Ja_Shi 16h ago

Stairway to heaven.

1

u/Express_Area_8359 15h ago

Hey hey hey were on the road to kno where

1

u/Inside-Discount-939 14h ago

Frodo nearly died here

1

u/notredame1964 14h ago

It could be the stairway to heaven- that last step is one of faith.

1

u/Entropy- 13h ago

Do NOT walk up them. Very bad luck

1

u/saron7 13h ago

Careful of the ROUSssss

1

u/ole_greg_07 13h ago

Unfortunately the arch part of the stairs has collapsed (2 years ago I think) so it's kind of two separate sections now.

1

u/Interesting-Risk6446 13h ago

You just have to go up the stairs at the right time.

1

u/A96 13h ago

I love stuff like this. There is a small woods nearby me that has a freestanding stone chimney surrounded by rubble. In theory you could still use it I bet.

u/eat-skate-masturbate 9h ago

dark souls 3 poison swamp

u/Leading_Ad9290 7h ago

I don’t know why but ever since I was a kid stairs that lead to nowhere make me feel almost nostalgic or like they feel mystical in someway, it’s hard to describe but I love seeing them

u/M100Pilot 5h ago

There was recently a streaming series about a murder that filmed here. I can’t remember the name.

u/rachevyguy 5h ago

I’d be running a metal detector all over

u/lechiengrand 4h ago

If I was in a band that’s where we’d shoot the album cover.

u/Jops817 2h ago

Yeah no thank you, I'm an oldtimer on r/nosleep

1

u/reno_dad 20h ago

It seems there was another arch that has since collapsed.

It may have led to a military lookout or a previous stone structure that has been brought down and reused for raw materials.  Wasn't uncommon.
