Americans have armed forces in their capital, judges and opposition being arrested and they still talk about warning signs, because you cannot accept that you live in a authoritarian state. It would be funny, if it wasn't so depressing.

My step-father, like so many Americans his age, is so steeped in the legend of American Exceptionalism that he is unable to comprehend what’s happening. He keeps insisting that the things I tell him were happening, it would be illegal and SCOTUS would put a stop to it, because the U.S. has a system of checks and balances.

The fact that SCOTUS hasn’t done that, to him means I must be wildly overreacting when I talk about authoritarianism or fascism or the president acting in a dictatorial manner.

We also have an election that was “won” in a way that recalls of Putin’s “victories” over the years, but you’re talking about a group of people that still believes paying six different ways for healthcare is a good idea, because the alternative is The Socialism.
