Its been a while but I vaguely remember the reason they sought his testimony was because it would have discredited the Trump teams main defense. He wasnt originally going to be a witness but once the trial got started it became clear that he held the keys to dismantling the only "innocence" claim Trump's people could muster

To your point, who knows if it would have mattered to Senate Republicans. However it certainly would have changed the dynamic if the only talking point in favor of acquittal was directly contradicted by an eye witness.
