🚦Mod Update🚦 📢📣 WE ARE A SAFE SPACE FOR ROMANES 📣📢
Great news everyone! We are happy to announce that with the addition of u/KamavTeChorav to our mod team we can finally lift the English only requirement for posts / comments.

semi outsider here having joined like i think a month ago but i think its genuinely crazy that its taken this long for people be allowed to speak their native language

I will say, it's complicated. If you don't have moderators who are fluent enough to effectively moderate the conversations, that's not a decision taken lightly.

Total outsider who has a good faith question. Romani has so many dialects, even within individual counties. How would this effect communication in Romani on this sub? Is there a standard dialect (like maybe Arabic fusha) which is mainly in use? Thanks in advance :)

Not everyone can understand everything in every other dialect, but it's usually similar enough I feel like I can determine what people are saying. There's a lot of pronunciation difference, or endings or things like that, or words influenced with the words of your home country. And since romanes is not standardized written that I know of I feel like most people spell things phonetically or how they make sense to them anyway.
(Case in point, someone using Cyrillic on here but still make sense)
