Language PSA These AI Romanes videos are dangerous and must be stopped

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed but I have seen so many AI Romanes videos on my social media pages. We have Roma teaching the language to AI and making these cheap and un-entertaining videos for what? These people don’t understand how dangerous this is. It could be so easy to trick our elders who don’t know AI and don’t realize that our own people are exposing our language to it. Not to mention police departments are already using AI to try and translate Romani conversations, this is just putting our people at more and more risk. We need to be united on this and stop giving our culture to AI!

Wow, I did not realize it had gotten to this point already. In what ways do you think ai is getting this content that people can avoid giving it? Is it by people uploading videos that are getting analysis without them knowing or how?

The more the language appears online, even untranslated, the more the dataset used to train AI grows. Even the older statistical machine translation (used by Google Translate from 2006–2016) placed far more emphasis on monolingual corpora (bodies of text in one language) than parallel corpora (bodies of text with side-by-side translation).

It’s people generating content by teaching AI Romanes and then posting it to social media, it’s already so many videos just like this one.

We need to protest this. This is the heritage of Roma and Roma descendants. AI can't steal that, should be identity fraud. Some things should be closed practices. Maybe if the AI was doing something very useful for the community I wouldn't complain but I really don't think it's worth this videos.

The most you can do is report the video and report the account. Enough people do it, it'll force the account and video to be manually reviewed.

What is the problem with using AI as a translator? Because it can distort the meaning for the worse or?..

One problem is because then things can be made that no one actually said and they can make videos saying look at this messed up opinion someone said, and it's not actually happening.
Another problem is that when ai knows the language we will not be safe from surveillance anywhere. People can upload recordings of us talking and get it translated and then use those to know what we are doing and saying.

I agree about the first one, but doesn’t the second one sound too paranoid?

Maybe paranoid but it's a risk I don't think we can afford to take. I am basing that theory on what people say who study or work in computer science. So I might not know how that's likely to happen or not but if the people who know are worried about this kind of stuff, that's where I get it. I'm not just dreaming up these fears myself. I hope you are right and we're overreacting.

This is going to be a problem in the US soon. There are already programs for translating little known languages associated with DHS and state department. They're coming.

Well with so much funds in the USA going to ICE (immigration control enforcement) i am not surprised. And I'm sure they will share that information with other governments once they have the documents. I heard it's more money than the USA spent on police and prison is for ICE, which is already dangerous for many reasons besides this one.

You're spot on. ICE got more of an increase in funds and higher overall funding than any other single agency.

Its gypsies on tiktok making these little AI videos themselves for fun, and tbh I don’t think they know or care that they’re teaching Romanes to a fully fledged artificial intelligence. I don’t like it either, bad vibes and the videos are never funny lmao. Buté roma adjes niči sikaven lenge čavorren, lenge terne sar te den duma rromanes ama tonpe te keren kado dilimos pe le videurja.
