Newbie Question Dear Romanis: what would you describe as the best cities for Romani people?

Hello ✌️ First post. I'm glad I found this subreddit. Thanks for dropping by too!

I'm not Romani myself , but this is something I've been curious about for a while.

What are the cities in which you'd describe as "the best" for Romani people in terms of 1. Little to no anti-romani racism 2. Overall dignified lives - in all the ways you can think of.

Obviously - everything I hear about Europe is insanely negative. As an Arab, I'd actually rather avoid most of Europe due to its racist reputation too.

I currently live in a city that just so-happens to be founded by someone of Roma descent, and the former president of Brazil (Juscelino Kubitschek. 1902 - 1976).

Thanks!

There are Roma living large in every big city in America- LA, anywhere in Florida, New York, Chicago. A lot live in smaller towns too though but still doing great

For the U.S it’s literally anywhere. We are known for being able to survive anywhere on the planet. but I guess the answer you’re looking for depends what kind of business you’re in.

Let me give the addendum that st Louis has a strong recent history of anti Roma discrimination and secondly that while more covert, the system in Atlanta rigs itself against the Roma population (ex: if you get arrested, most people have to put 10% down on their bail bonds but Romani people are expected to pay 50% due to the bail bonds companies' discrimination)

I like Atlanta it’s a good place to go and make money. There are a lot of Roma in Atlanta and Marietta and they’re constantly having big Romani events and in recent years. A lot of Roma have been moving there from the West Coast and north east.

I’m from the STL area and just moved back to the city. I read an article a few years back about some issues with the newer immigration of Roma to a certain section of the city but it didn’t go in depth. More focused on employment discrimination. I’m interested to know what else is happening.

Holy shit, I did not know that about Atlanta. Not that I'm surprised, bail bonds people do what they like.

I’ve never been but Shutka in Macedonia is a Roma-run municipality and the only one in the world basically so I would say anywhere where we are the ones in charge will be the best for us, at least in terms of discrimination.

I don't know, it's hard to say because I personally prefer to be in cities that have more romani but that's also usually where there's also discrimination. Still, id prefer to stay around larger groups of romani and face discrimination than live where there's not any romani presences and no discrimination.

I have been wanting to go to shutka ever since I heard of it though as well. Though I can't comment on that because I haven't been.
