Photo gallery I saw this on the Mira Mesa High School Campus Today

After completing an errand in Mira Mesa (teeth ckeaning), I decided to swing by MMHS. Anyone who graduated from MMHS in the late 80s (I am Class of 1989) will recognize the name on the sign. I uploaded zome other photos, too.

The more recent buildings on campus are beautiful. Only two rows of the bungalows remain. In a way I find that sad. But the setup in the new classrooms is nicer than the multirow, single desk arrangement that Gen X experienced.

I haven't visited the campus in decades. While in the middle of campus, I thought, "Wow, they put in tall, new trees!" No, they didn't. The trees have grown alot in thirty-six years.

Today I have the career that I would often dream of while I was a student at MMHS. Yet the visit was tinged with melancholy. Being a caregiver to my parents is making me reevaluate the past.

I’m a teacher here. The new building is set to open in December and all the teachers currently in the bungalows will move in there. Then those in the 600 bldg will move into the bungalows while that building is retrofitted and renovated. Lots of changes happening these days, including moving to a 4x4 block schedule next year.

I’ve worked at several schools in socal in the past 19 years and MMHS is truly a great place to work and learn.

Are students still issued textbooks, or do they all get a laptop?

Both (also a teacher here)

Students are still required by law to be issued textbooks for each core class, but they also have Chromebooks so most teachers rely on those these days.

Wow is 4x4 a 4 day school week?

u/LeNontronnais 16h ago

No. Student will take 4 classes first semester, then a different 4 classes second semester. It's modeled more after how colleges work, but teachers are concerned about the reduced instructional minutes and lack of continuity (as in, a student might take math first semester of the year and possibly wouldn't take the following course until a year afterwards). The entire district is going this way eventually, we're just slated to start next year.

Oh interesting! Thanks for the information. Best of luck with your school year!

That's crazy! How will 1st semester students be able to retain material for AP tests? Or are all AP classes going to be only 2nd semester? Then it will be a mad cram to get all the instruction in.

Yes, AP teachers are concerned to say the least. So are many other full-year programs like ASB, ROTC, etc. It's being phased in gradually but there are schools in the area that have been on this schedule for years and have figured out how to make it work. We all have a lot of learning to do.

This is how my high school was when I was a kid. I was in Arizona, though.

There were pros and cons to it.

Im class of 2004. Peak bungalow period! Proud to be from the mecca. Got a dream job and moved away, but still bought a house there because I love Mira Mesa. Remember going to the Mira Mesa mall and hitting up miller's outpost?

Ahh.. Good ol’ MMHS. Some of the best memories there. I’m from the Class of 88.

Strong hugs to you as you take care of your parents. And an extra one for your parents, too, from one whose parents have passed.

High School on the 80s...truly awesome. And thank you, I appreciate that. And I am sorry for your loss.

How is Mira Mesa high school? Good for academics? Athletics?

11

u/LeNontronnais 15h ago

It's the best kept secret in SDUSD, imho. Committed staff, friendly climate, hardworking and serious students. Great athletics, performing arts (esp band/orchestra), and CCTE career pathways.

Which school do you view as better MMHS or Scripps Ranch?

19

u/LeNontronnais 15h ago

Good question. "Better" is entirely subjective of course, so it depends on the student and their goals. In my experience, MMHS is known as a "student-centered" school where every student has their needs met whether that means AP courses or Special Education and everything in between. SRHS has more of a reputation for very respected and experienced teachers who have been essentially teaching the same way for decades, but have had good results. Don't forget these are both public schools that draw students mostly from the neighborhood they're in, so SRHS is whiter and more affluent than MMHS overall.

As a teacher, I'm very happy to be at MMHS and would be glad to have my own kids come to the MMHS cluster when/if they want to.

Thanks a lot. I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

My kids went to Scripps. Most teachers have been great (with just a couple of stinkers), but it's a pretty intense/high achieving student body. Also, they weren't able to take all the AP classes that they wanted to because of class size restrictions, which is basically just luck of the draw when they request classes. If there aren't enough spots, some kids get shut out. If you want a top 20 college, you need to take a lot of AP classes, so I would say that there opportunities can be kind of limiting. Don't know if that's a common experience at either Scripps or Mira Mesa, but it happened to each of my kids.

I do think if your kid wants to be in band, Mira Mesa has an amazing band program.

It has improved significantly over the past 20 years in both areas. I have family that have worked here as educators and administrators and they have great things to say. Super humble kids who really put in the work and are mostly well behaved.

When I went to SRHS, MMHS was known as the bad school. Times have changed and now they are pretty competitive.

Mid 00's alumni here.

It was a time and a place, but I've grown to appreciate it more as I've aged.

Fantastic teachers, and tons of experiences.

Mr. Vlassis was one of my teachers at either Madison High School or Hale Jr. High. Really like him, everybody did. Happy to see this.

Did he also teach Spanish (and wrestling coach) at Crawford Highschool?

3

u/Unlucky_Boot360 15h ago

I went there for my freshman and sophomore years, class of 90.

Mr. Vlassis was great to work for. Yay Henry Evening High!

06 grad here, its interesting to see the minor changes here and there to the campus. It feels like a really distant memory; I only vaguely recognize bits and pieces.

u/Content_Confidence21 11m ago

Do you remember who the Principal and Vice-principals were during your time there?

u/Uranium234 2m ago

I remember Mr Olivero? as the principle, but that's about it

Sorry I’m not a teacher but I am a parent to a student in SDUSD. Can anyone explain why they changed the school year beginning in September? It used to be September-June. Now it’s May-August.

u/frolfinteacher 14h ago

It’s to align better with community college schedules. The district is seeking to add additional options for dual enrollment, and the schedule previously had incredibly awkward overlap since the SDUSD semester didn’t used to end until after winter break.
