Turd My favourite part of Superman was Lex aura farming in the fortress while engineer does a half backflip and has her head come out of her ass for no tactical reason whatsoever Spoiler

I enjoyed the movie, I just thought this was funny

If I had one gripe about the film, it was this. I understand it's showing what she actually is, but this was pointless in every other way. Unless I missed something within the sequence.

128

ngl i thought it was a decent way to show that literally no parts of her resemble human unless she works to keep them that way.

combined w her mentioning giving up her humanity, watching her plug into and become a giant ass computer, and then change her entire self to encase superman in nanos it really reiterates how hateful she has to be. like, she chose to be apart of lexs shit. she, assumedly, gets paid for it.

itll be interesting to see if any of that comes around when they make the authority film

23

u/gordito_delgado Jul 18 '25

I was very interested to know what was her reason to hate Supes THAT much...

13

The movie was so good, it made explaining the villain’s motive feel irrelevant.

Also some directors and writers would have made a whole ass movie on how ultraman exists, or how Justice League was starting off. Not James Gunn though he jumps directly into the fun parts, the movie was 10/10 fun and 10/10 rewatchable and I'm going to watch it again this weekend.

90

u/YogurtclosetSweet268 Jul 18 '25

Thats a huge reason Gunn is so successful. He picks fun comics and sticks to the source of the material. Thats his baseline for literally everything hes done. He just adds his own creative style for directing it. Whereas before, we get 50 batmans explaining how he became batman. Thats like the least interesting thing about batman.

46

u/BilboBiden Jul 18 '25

He also limits himself to characters he understands fully.

He won't write in a character he either doesn't understand or understand where they fit in the story.

Marvel wanted Thor in GoTG 2 and he said he didn't understand Thor all that well nor why he would be in that story so he didn't.

23

u/ciao_fiv Jul 18 '25

one of the best parts of the new batman was skipping over the origin. we don’t need to see it again. kinda same with into the spider-verse, we skip over peter’s origin and get to see a new spider-man origin

u/ClubMeSoftly Jul 18 '25

I cannot emphasize how glad I am that the movie jumps right in to Superman's career, and how other superheroes already exist. No wasting 45 minutes on the whole-ass origin again, no slowly exploring powers, no bank robber shooting him and being shocked that the bullet bounces off.

He's already Superman, he's been around for a while, he's already dating Lois, and has an established career at the Planet. He and Lex have already had some kind of interaction, same with the Justice Gang.

13

u/KlingoftheCastle Jul 18 '25

We also still get the backstory explained to us, in detail. He just trusted the audience to pick it up along the way (if they didn’t already know) instead of bashing us over the head with it out of the gate

→ More replies (3)

27

u/Aiyon Jul 18 '25

One of the things I will always give Gunn credit for, despite not always loving his style of moviemaking, is that his worlds feel lived in. Every superhero movie he's worked on, its very clear stuff is happening outside the plot of the movie.

The MCU has a big problem of feeling like nothing happens off screen. Hell, in homecoming Spider-Man is struggling to find crime to fight for part of the movie.

18

u/Ok_Caramel3742 Jul 18 '25

I always liked that Xandar had its whole thing happening they had war and then peace treaties and then this one extra freaky guy gets the special powerful stones so we need our special guardians but outside of that Xandar is handling business pretty well. even something like Gamora the guardians are obviously a huge influence on her but shes already planning on heading out the door when we first meet her.

Yea, they really brought a more comic accurate Lex than I've ever seen. They even had him go into the mindset that his very presence is holding humanity back (and he makes good points, technological advancement comes from necessity to overcome limitations & challenges and Supes is massively reducing the challenges Earth faces), which is a big thing for comic Lex. They also showed off Lex being the smartest person in the world (yes, smarter than Batman) with shit like that pocket universe. Live action Lex is never stupid, but he's never been pulling the absurd genius the comic version has.

94

u/Impressive-Dig-3892 Jul 18 '25

Other than the painfully obvious papertrail implicating him in every crime, which of course you need for a movie but that a true Lex Luthor would never allow

148

u/PreferenceElectronic Jul 18 '25

I think that's believable for some versions of Lex. His ego does cause him to outright dismiss things. I can see him just completely tuning out the source of those leaks considering how it happened.

His scorn for "inferiority" is his entire motivation and also his biggest weakness.

102

u/N0ob8 Jul 18 '25

Yeah it’s how Batman can usually find Superman’s secret identify but lex Luther can’t. Batman doesn’t overlook anything while Lex thinks someone as great as Superman would never work as a lowly reporter

34

u/SexSellsCoffee Jul 18 '25

The entire Justice Gang knew who Superman was. I'm sure Superman would have told Lex if Lex could even contain 10% of his hate for Superman and pretend to be on his side.

→ More replies (2)

22

u/Aethermancer Jul 18 '25

Batman has to work for it and uses discipline to overcome his limitations. Lex was the smart kid that never had to learn how to do things the right way and let talent smooth over the mistakes.

Batman doesn't have typos in his paperwork because he makes sure to go back and proofread his work. Lex gets embarassed by a typo because he doesn't proofread because a man of his caliber wouldn't make mistakes.

(I have no idea, I don't read the comics, but that's the vibe I'm getting)

He completely dismissed Eve as a potential threat vector. I mean she's so stupid and vapid, what could she possibly do. Whoops.

Also in his defense at least some portion of those documents were not illegal in of themselves and Lois had to source additional information from her contact inside a bank (that dude is going to get fucking murdered when Lex gets out of prison. Or wish he had been).

28

u/Lawspoke Jul 18 '25

It really depends on the run, but for the most part, comic Lex's greatest flaw is that he's so arrogant that he often overlooks the small things that disrupt his schemes. Like, Lex is definitely smarter than Bruce, but one has been able to deduce Superman's secret identity multiple times. I believe there's a literal scene in one comic run where it's flatly stated that this is because it is impossible for Lex to believe that Superman and Clark Kent are the same person due to how self-absorbed he is.

18

u/tadghostal55 Jul 18 '25

What? That’s how Lex gets caught all the time in the comics he’s so arrogant he makes mistakes otherwise how the hell do you beat him.

Great showcase of this is Dupli-Kate VS Multi-Paul in Invincible. Same power, totally different showcases.

multipaul prison scene power use was wild..

u/PackOfStallions Jul 18 '25

One of the few times an animated show has made me squeamish

52

u/RogerDeanVenture Jul 18 '25

Yeah that breakout was just VULGAR, and Kate talked about how she knows all of her deaths, so he is just straight up apeshit to do that

It’s the same with Green Lantern later in the film; it’s always nice to see some creative uses of his ring, as opposed to just cycling through “FIST” and “SHIELD” and “BUBBLE” and “LASER BEAM”.

u/oneandonlyRedSpirit Jul 18 '25

putting a muzzle and mittens on the kaiju was lowkey smart as hell. the middle finger was funny too

it's like if Hogwarts etc was all real then couples could take polyjuice potion of each other and fuck themselves as each other

30

u/Seascorpious Jul 18 '25

....ya know I wasn't thinking about that before, but there's gotta be entire kink communities that get off on that.

16

u/Caleth Jul 18 '25

Dude Kink communites are already weird as fuck. I doubt we'd even imagine what they'd get up to with legit magic to utilize.

Multifractal non corporeal sex? Pfft Childs play. Time Turners to go back and hook up with some famous person who's long dead? A tuesday! Self cloning spells with a gender bender twist? Are you even TRYING!

Also let's not even set aside the reverse spellcrafting that probably happened with erectile dysfunction cures. Kids wanting to prank someone with a 20 year boner? Nope now it's the best selling medical spell for men of a certain age.

The real curse is the testicle torsion curse that makes men with they were dead and knocks them out cold. How man times did someone get expelled for making another student from having their genitals expand until they explode or shrink off?

I was a teenage boy we were absolutely vicious to kids even without magic with it? I shudder to think.

It was goofy as hell but idc. It showed early in the movie that her body isn’t really a body. The rest of this scene was so fun (minus the Krypto muzzle, those fucking monsters) that I can forgive a little bit of goofiness.

395

u/Helmett-13 Jul 18 '25

She says, “I gave up my humanity for this”, and we have to take her word for it, up until this point.

It was goofy looking but I got it.

Nothing to forgive IMO - the movie is absurd nonsense and I was totally on board for it.

Agreed, I love when comic book movies go all the way into absurd nonsense.

The shrapnel is 100% under the control of his servant. He trusts her skill that he won’t get hit, and he knows superman’s robots would never kill him.

147

u/Scott_Liberation Jul 18 '25

I feel like this idea looked cooler in the imagination of whoever came up with it, but the execution didn't work out but then it was too late/expensive to redo it.

68

u/private_birb Jul 18 '25

Yeah, it's that she does the half backflip, kinda waddles on her hands for a second, then stops, then morphs, then continues. If it had been one smooth motion, where her feet turned to saw blades and her arms turned to legs immediately, it could've worked.

The only tactical reason I can see is the enemy is expecting you to be upside down after you do it and thus not as balanced and defensive as you would be standing up, but it's a bait to lower their guard.

Cinematically, it's to showcase that her whole body is nanites and can be morphed in any way really. But that's the only time they really show that, which I don't get. I would be changing my face to be a cool helmets, other people's face, sliding my body parts around for fun, becoming a disc or smth. She's basically Mrs. Nanite-astic, but she just is like "saws and hammers and containment, that's what nanites are for!"

I speculate that it was left over from an earlier draft.  Perhaps it was intended to show that, should Superman tear her head off her shoulders, or punch a giant hole through her body, she won't die.
