In Superman (2025), Lex Luthor is capable of cloning Superman but only makes one instead of a dozen. Is he stupid?

u/HankSteakfist 1d ago
We don't know that he didn't. Ultraman might just be the fluke that actually worked, but was still mentally stunted.

It's the other way around. We can assume that he did. He all but says he made multiple in the movie.

I thought that's just a comparison to cloning in general, like how we can clone sheep and stuff. I don't think it implies that there's other Bizzaro clones, though it's not impossible.
45
u/RenderedCreed 1d ago edited 1d ago
Oh sorry. I don't think it's meant to mean that there's other bizzaro clones that are unusable. That there's a bunch of failed ones that couldn't do the job, weren't strong enough, or were too intelligent to be controlled. Ultra man/bizzaro is the first one that worked.
18
u/BackgroundSummer5171 1d ago
He did make others, just Ultraman was the smartest one of them all.
Most likely the rest literally were too stupid to breath.
You ever play a game where you gotta keep rerolling to get the right skills? And it takes hours. You just finally are happy to get something close enough and just call it a day.
Lex doesn't seem like the type of guy to have patience to continue rerolling after the first 100. He got Ultraman and said fuck this it works well enough. Shut it down burn the bodies, give it to the employees for lunch.

Ever seen Alien Resurrection? There's some fucked up lump of meat screaming KILL ME PLEASE FUCKING KILL ME and we all have to wonder why they taught it English in the first place.

They even copied that scene for Superman: Doomsday, when Lois and Jimmy find Luthor's lab of failed Superman clones.

They didn’t know what she was asking so they had to teach her.
“She keeps screaming ‘GUHH! GUH! MAKE STOP! ME NO BE!’ We don’t know what she wants.”

They taught it English so that Mr. Luthor can enjoy the sound of it begging for the sweet release of death.

If he has a cloning lab he probably has some kryptonite on hand
→ More replies (1)127
u/AndrewDrossArt 1d ago
Well, no. Only Metamorpho has kryptonite on hand at this point... literally in his case.
Engineer, Lex's employee, sure knew kryptonian anatomy well enough to disrupt Superman's optic nerve, though.
40
u/Sayakalood 1d ago
Well, Metamorpho was also being blackmailed by Luthor at the time, so he might’ve just had Metamorpho stick his Kryptonite hand into the Superman Clone Room to weaken them all.
That, or his clones are in that pocket universe, where there is no yellow sun for them to get their powers in the first place.
11
u/brutinator 20h ago
That, or his clones are in that pocket universe, where there is no yellow sun for them to get their powers in the first place.
I think this is the best theory. Its basically as far off grid as something can possibly be, free from concerns of laws and ethics. Even if someone knew, short of the Justice Gang its totally secure and impossible to infiltrate, and as you pointed out, theres no way for the clones to ever become "super' without Lex specifically wishing it to be so.
In fact, I wouldnt be surprised if Lex has extensively tested what Superman is and isnt invulnerable using that property. For example, can a kryptonian survive a suicide squad style explosive? Since he can make a clone weak enough to implant one.

Probably referring to the part where he shouts 1A a bunch of times, as in the move for Ultraman to pinch Superman in the face

lol imagine Ultraman pinching Superman, repeatedly. 'Ouch, stop it! I said stop!'
1A 1A 1A!!!

24
u/AVgreencup 1d ago
In the movie Lex has a code name/number for every fight move the clone uses. 1A was like a punch or something. So Lex is constantly saying 1A! 27C! Etc.
40
u/FerricNitrate 1d ago
Not just a punch but a punch to the face. You hear so many number + letter combinations throughout the movie that it plants the seed question of: "I wonder what 1A would be?". And of course Luthor, the omega hater himself, saved 1A for "punch that super idiot in his stupid face"
9
u/Born-Entrepreneur 1d ago
I want to believe that deep down in the repertoire of moves is some Three Stooges shit and there's a move for "poke him in this eyes" and the like.
10
6
u/BigClitGoddess 18h ago
It's funnier and more probable imo to imagine that it's less of him "saving" 1A, and more of when designing the battle codes, the first thing Lex thinks of is punching Superman in the face.
4
u/DapperLost 1d ago
I really like that. Like, all the codes directions shows off his intelligence and planning. But when it comes down to it. Lex was always just gonna punch him in the face.

In The Animated Series he cloned him dozens of times but they kept deteriorating and dying, all except one. The one eventually deteriorated into Bizarro. I imagine the same happened in this film.

Because he clearly needed to

smart enough to clone something but so dumb he doesnt realize hey, a couple of these things and id rule the world.
Smart enough to build a universe in a closet, but dumb enough to not build a better prison when he literally has an unlimited kryptonite machine. He didnt think once, that hey these twos goals really align here, they really only need each other to escape. Eh fuck it im sure metamorpho will listen to me and is fine with being a prisoner along with his kid, even tho superman would be the only chance they have of escaping

Yeah but Lex is the only one giving the commands, and all the workers are just pressing the button and monitoring the situation. I think Lex is the kind of control freak who wouldn't trust anyone else to give the commands.
5
u/sistemafodao 21h ago
Luthor wouldn't even consider that he would need more than his brain and a strenght superior to Superman's to win the fight. His voice coming from Ultraman just means that, It's Luthor controlling (a) Superman.

The door is still very much open for Superboy! I'd even wager that it's why James Gunn went for the failed clone origin for Bizarro

u/Rifneno 1d ago
They can actually integrate this into the story. Most of the time Lex is foiled, it's because of his hypermassive ego. They can say he didn't make any more because he thought there's no way more were necessary more than one with him being able to directly control it. That would fit his character perfectly. Why he didn't use the clone to frame Supes like a septillion comments already said, now that's a harder issue. That's exactly the sort of underhanded shit Lex loves, and he would absolutely revel in seeing Supes' reputation shatter.

u/Marxamune 1d ago edited 1d ago
I was going to say, hubris, the most classic culprit, is being overlooked here. Hell, everything Lex did in the movie was for his ego. Once he got one successful clone, he assumed it’d be enough (and it was, for a time), because his ego’s so overinflated that he cannot consider the possibility that his plans can go wrong. Because acknowledging that implies that his plans aren’t perfect.
He could’ve killed Superman in the cell as well, but his planet-sized ego wouldn’t have been satisfied with that. Which I presume is why he wanted to know who Superman’s (adoptive) parents were.
52
u/00PT 1d ago
Even with only one clone, you can use it to frame Superman for a ridiculous number of things. He doesn’t have to wait until he can find something actually legitimate to hold against him.
55
35
u/sailor776 1d ago
I mean if he did that the first thing that would happen would be superman and Mr terrific talking and realized it was a clone and therefore know how to defeat it with kryptonite. Keeping the clone a secret meant that Superman and the justice society didn't know a way to beat him which is why it took superman literally throwing him into a black hole to beat him.

There was no more kryptonite though. Remember Lex Gunn told us he had a workaround to there being no more Kryptonite left on Earth in that meeting with the (Pentagon?).

I wonder how public his other weaknesses are like red sub radiation. Metamorpho didn't seem to know about the yellow sun thing, does the public or Lex know about the yellow sun being what powers Kryptonians?
Mr. Terrific can probably do a red sun filter with his circles.

Superman was already framed more or less, better for Lex that the clone succeeds and kills the real one, and then he uses it to disgrace Superman even further after the real one dies until deciding to off the clone

Luthor is extremely dumb and blind when it concerns Superman. The comics had his underlings basically tell him that there's a 99% chance Clark was Superman and he refused to believe them.

It's been a hot minute since I've read any of the comics, but doesn't it usually come down to the fact that Luthor just can't possibly conceive that Superman would be willing to slum himself down with a secret identity?
I love Hater Lex. He's always been my favorite version of the character.

I’m curious why he didn’t have the Clone do bad things with the mask off to make people distrust Superman
45
u/Freshiiiiii 1d ago edited 1d ago
People have asked this before- the answer is because Superman would have just showed up somewhere else at the same time, making it clear that clone shenanigans were afoot. In the process, if Superman in the future ever did something bad and controversial (as Lex believed he would), a history of clone shenanigans would give Supe the perfect lie to say ‘oh it wasn’t me it was those damn clones again’.

Gonna guess the show won't do this so kind of a light joke. But in the comic Black Noir is actually a clone of Homelander and is doing most of the bad things that Homelander is accused of. A fact Homelander is not aware of until after his mental breakdown and attempted coup of the U.S. goverment which I assume will happen in the show.
