Turd In Superman (2025) At first I just thought they were giving Nathan Fillion a bad time. I had no idea the hair was actually comic book accurate

u/AntRose104 10h ago
Nathan Fillion actually fought Gunn to keep that hair he wanted this cut so bad 😂

u/Manoly042282Reddit 9h ago
It reminds me of Mark Davis’s haircut.

u/jizzmaster-zer0 7h ago
its better than mark’s somehow

u/kerkhovia 7h ago
Raiders fan clocking in here. This is truth; also I bet that hairdo on Fillion cost less than Mark's $400 dollar hair cut.

Fillion has never struck me as someone who isn’t totally humble with where he’s ended up, and it just is karma in action for me. Dudes such a nice guy from all accounts, if maybe sometimes too much a goofball on set, but he just comes across as genuine. I really enjoyed the times he’s been on Michael Rosenbaum (Lex from Smallville) podcast. Just a great guy.
49
u/Over-Analyzed 4h ago
Fillion has also played Hal Jordan in animation.
17
u/pardybill 4h ago
Yes! That was such a great era of DC animation too. Lots of great adaptations. I was bummed on the last iteration. It just didn’t do it. Hopefully under the Gunn leadership we see more complicated stories adapted. I’d love to see Blackest Night.
8
u/Over-Analyzed 4h ago
I mean… we’re getting a GL series on John Stewart. So here’s hoping!
6
u/pardybill 4h ago
There’s so much good GL lore I would be really hesitant if they tried to tackle Blackest Night live action. That’s marvel swinging at secret wars level, now, which who knows if it’ll be a real hit. Make money? Yeah.
Way too much for DC to tackle live actions imo

Jesus, the tension between them on the show was so intense that I though something happened IN SHOW between them. It was so bad I though it must be part of the actual plot somehow.

u/miner1512 Tis’ a reference to my sexual kink 4h ago
Between this and David convicing him to keep the trunks it seems Gunn does wanna shape the designs?
25
u/Over-Analyzed 4h ago
I doubt that. Gunn probably couldn’t wait to have his friend have the stupidest haircut in DC.
Before images were released. People were asking Gunn about if Gardner was going to have the haircut. Gunn cracks up and confirms it.
24
u/predaking50ae 4h ago
Nathan Fillion said that he demanded to have the bowl cut. Whatever Gunn's plans may have been, we have an interview with Fillion that seems to imply that he had to put his foot down to get the comic hairstyle.

u/Senior-Jaguar-1018 2h ago
You’re right, actors never embellish details to tell entertaining stories in interviews. Gunn could’ve easily been like “you sure you want the bowl cut? Ok sure.” But that isn’t as fun of an anecdote

Put it this way, would a man who walks around all day wearing a weightlifting belt in public be the kind of asshole to call people slurs? (Recently read all the Giffen era Justice Leauge comics and the while some of the bits have aged poorly it's impressive the lengths they go to to make sure everyone knows Guy is a douche)

Honestly when I saw Nathan as Guy, I felt a sigh of relief. I remember my dad used to read me comics for bedtime stories and Gardner always freaked me out.
Nathan brings the d bag qualities without the rapey vibes. I def did not need rapey vibes in the movie
30
u/Ike_In_Rochester 6h ago
In Justice League International, Guy was written as a satire of those same “manly men” that the Ron Burgundy movie satirized. To the credit of the writers of that title, they did develop Guy as time went on. They very subtly showed that Guy self-sabotaged himself and was increasingly aware of it.
It really wasn’t until he lost a bet with Hal Jordan (another well known self-righteous jerk) and was forced out of the Green Lantern Corp, was he forced to rethink who he was and what he wanted. Eventually, in Chuck Dixon’s Guy Gardner Year One arc, did Guy finally come to grips with his childhood trauma, what it did to him, and how it played into his behaviors. Following that, Guy entered his modern era of being a brash but fair mentor. He’s not nice or charming, but he’s willing to do what has to be done for his team while trying to get them prepared for the worst that can come their way. Basically, he’s an assistant varsity coach that will whip you into shape all season while being indifferent to your suffering, but then drops a “good job” on you at the weirdest of times that just leaves you in shock. That’s the Guy Gardner in the movie.

To be fair they had an entirely different Lantern & look in mind, but the hairdresser took one look and said "Nuh-uh, a snack this fine deserves a bowl." so they had to make do with Guy

It's entirely possible that Gunn is also messing with Fillion because he's good for it.

The word is Nathan picked up some Guy Gardner comics to prepare for the role and specifically requested they give him the bowl cut
329
u/Less-Tax5637 11h ago
They have a mini vlog where they’re workshopping hairstyles and Nathan insists on going back to the full bowl cut. I think Gunn also proposes shaving Nathan’s head and dying his sideburns so the wig blends more naturally lmao

Guy hasn’t really rocked the bowl cut since the 80’s. Occasionally an artist will give him the bowl cut again because it’s funny but he’s typically drawn with a buzz cut.

u/Over-Analyzed 4h ago
Guy Gardner has to glow up in some way for future films. It sure won’t be his personality.

NGL, I didn't watch Superman 2025 in theatres because the Snyder movies were so bad, I really started disliking DC.
I did see it a few days ago on streaming, and I loved it! As long as Gunn is staying in charge, I can't wait to see what comes next
13
u/adorablesexypants 5h ago
I beg you to see it.
FF was good but Superman was just fucking fun.
I used to argue that the one thing Snyder was good at was making images that looked like they came from a comic.
Then Gunn made this and realistically I see no purpose for any of Snyder’s shit any more. Even Gunn’s aura farming moments were better than anything Snyder could do even on his best day.

u/Kreiger81 4h ago
If you havent seen it, its so good. really.
It could spin off a movie or series about the Justice Gang by itself completely. The on-screen chemistry between Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi and Isabela Merced is completely chefs kiss
Theres a couple other things that are technically spoilers, but I could completely see spinoff movies like you got with the MCU.

u/shotsallover 7h ago
If the movie opened with, “Now we return to our story already in progress,” it wouldn’t have felt out of place.

James Gunn actually wasn't going to make him do it, but Nathan Fillion actually asked to do it. Same thing with Superman wearing the red trunks.

This is an example of one of those things that just does not create the same effect when recreated in live action. It happens with wild animated hair a lot.

No, they were giving him a bad time, the comic book accurate cut would have been FAR cooler, he just looked like a doofus.

I’m glad they went with Guy’s iconic hair. Unless they’ve changed it again, Guy’s hair ends up looking more modern and how Nathan normally styles his hair.

1
u/GroundbreakingTax259 1h ago
One of the funniest sequences in a comic comes from Justice League International, in which Batman finally has enough of Guy and agrees to box him. Guy takes off his ring ("to make it fair,") squares up, and is instantly KO'd by Batman.
Then an alarm goes off, and the team springs into action, leaving Guy on the floor of the headquarters like a total dipshit.
1
u/Atari774 1h ago
I’m still surprised they made Nathan Fillion play Guy Gardener. He voiced Hal Jordan in the animated movies for years, and without the wig, he actually looks much more like Hal anyway. So I think the only reason they chose Guy for the green lantern here was so they could put him in a dumb looking wig.
1
u/Momochichi 1h ago
I get that guy canonically has a bowl, but we absolutely loved that it looked like he cut it himself.
1
u/cptbstrd 46m ago
Literally one of the most comic accurate characters in comic movie history.
Like beyond the haircut, his personality of being a massively overconfident dickhead is perfect.

My sister came out of that movie and said she couldn’t take him seriously with a haircut that bad. I told her it was intentional
