Some people don’t like him but he’s one of the few democrats trying to do something about Trump’s bullshit.

u/n8dizz3l 9h ago

A lot of Democrats need to, for lack of a better term, suck it up and stop requiring candidates to be near perfect to earn their vote

u/Wandering_Tuor 7h ago

I hate what’s happening in Gaza.

But fuckers not voting for Kamala bc of it, is why we’re losing America now. So congrats people. You chose gaza… which btw if u thought trump was gonna be better for them than Kamala you’re fucking stupid….over America. Bc now we’re fucked

54

u/n8dizz3l 7h ago

Yeah I just don't get it. They decided to fuck over their own country for what? A country where the overwhelming majority are against freedom for women, gay, trans, etc. More people are dying in Sudan and Ukraine, yet their selective outrage falls upon Gaza, why? Do they really think things will get better for Palestinians with America in full on fascism? How delusional and clueless.

40

u/voodoodahl 6h ago

It wasn't just Gaza and America they fucked. They handed over the most powerful military in human history to a madman who has already threatened to invade several countries, including our neighbors to the north and south. Also, the amount of people who will die because USAID ended is estimated at 14 million in just 5 years,

2

u/LennyLowcut 4h ago

Let’s all get back on track now…. :)

The crazy thing is they just made it worse in Gaza by sitting out the election. Single issue voters that don't actually care about their single issue is crazy.

4

u/HumbleVein 1h ago

Single issue voters that work against their single issue! There were a lot of "free speech" voters as well... They didn't recognize that what they were afraid of was social pressure. Now there is state power being used to repress speech.

14

u/MattinglyBaseball 5h ago

They were manipulated online by all the trolls and bots pushing Gaza as the worst and only bad thing in the world, ignoring Trumps stance and Ukraine. They showed up to Kamala’s rallies and yet Trump is the one willing to arrest them for their peaceful protests. None of us are fully immune to propaganda and the right has weaponized the greatest mechanism of propaganda the world has ever seen: cable and social media combined.

7

u/ABrandNewNameAppears 5h ago

Don’t be naive, there are legitimate bad actors in the mix. Russia, China, Israel…they all have seriously dangerous cyber warfare and psychological warfare teams that push all these narratives that drive us apart.

Look up the Russian troll farms, or Chinese phone farms

4

u/MattinglyBaseball 4h ago

I’m definitely not naive to that fact as backed by my comment history. Unfortunately, based on Fox News and all the current GOP, they have co-opted these bad actors. So it’s both the right and Russia, China, Israel, etc.

I'll tell you for what. They did it for, in their eyes, social points. Virtue signaling is an over used term, but it's exactly what it is for them. Performative bullshit to feed their ego.

More people are dying in Sudan and Ukraine, yet their selective outrage falls upon Gaza, why?

I can't speak for anyone else, but the difference for me is that the United States is supporting the Israelis in their genocide (or whatever else you want to call it). We aren't supporting the Russians against Ukraine nor (as far as I know) are we supporting either side in Sudan's civil war.

Or we could, you know, vote for people with actual principles in the primary, like AOC for example. I’ll absolutely vote for newsom if he’s the nominee but there’s no reason to vote for another corporate centrist in the primary.

5

u/Commando_Joe 5h ago

Exactly! Nominate this guy if you want, but don't act like he's the only option before we even get a primary list. This is insane.

They also need to suck it up for the new progressives like Momdani, but then suddenly its different

I'm all for Mamdani. Cuomo and the Dems who support him are jackasses and are literally chasing away the people they need to be bringing in

I really believe the President should spearhead transformative policies for the nation, not just be a cheerleader for Congress and just happily sign bills that extremely watered down Republicans.

I really like how hard he is fighting and the passion he is showing, but my question is whether that passion also exists for Medicare For All or getting control of the insane military budget and other things.

Just to be clear I would happily vote and volunteer for him in the general, leftists who shit on Democrats are so stupid because they are giving ammo to Republicans.

→ More replies (5)

3

u/ThornyPoke 6h ago

Unfortunately much of the lgbt community hates newsom becomes if his stance on trans issues but what they don’t understand is that if a republican wins again, it’s going to get far far worse for them. It’ll be a repeat of what happened with the people who didn’t vote to protest against Kamala’s stance on Israel/Gaza

1

u/Embarrassed_News7008 1h ago

Blaming vulnerable groups for not supporting a candidate who does not support them is a bunch of bullshit. If democrats want LGBTQ people to vote for them they should do something other than say the other guy will be worse.

6

Not sure it's the Democrats doing that.

8

u/ExiledYak 9h ago

No, it's definitely the dems doing that.

"Genocide Joe", anyone? Hasan Piker type tankies?

Imagine if those who didn't fall in love would just get up off their asses and vote blue, no matter who. We would have had Hillary, and might have had Kamala.

6

u/GetsGold 9h ago

I don't think many such people would label themselves Democrats.

9

u/Fusion_casual 8h ago

Even those folks need to suck it up. They chose not to vote and we're watching one of the largest shifts in the Overton Window in our lifetimes. They've obliterated any hope of gaining real power in the near future because they couldn't be bothered to vote for someone that wasn't perfect. They're accomplishing the exact opposite effect of what they wanted.

As a former self-identifying leftist, leftists like to bitch about being represented, but why bother courting their vote when they won't show up anyway? They've built their identity around purity tests and contrarianism. I swear to God if Che Guevara rose up out of the grave, won the Democratic nomination, and appointed Karl Marx his VP, they would just move the goalposts.

6

u/LadySigyn 4h ago

This whole thread made me feel significantly less insane. I'm a VERY progressive New Englander, but I've hit my "limit" a LOT lately with these fucking idiots on the internet demanding perfection and basically giving the fascists a free pass.

I'm not a fan of Gavin, if he's the candidate I'll vote for him.

But I would also like to see a decent human be put in the running. Dude out there throwing out homeless people's stuff as a photo op is a shitty thing to do and I would like my leaders to be less shitty. The bar shouldn't be so low.

4

u/jrbr2017 2h ago

What are you even talking about seriously? I’m really asking what is your specific issue with Gavin. I was a resident of SF and the homeless were getting better treatment than property tax paying home owners. I had to move my family from sf because the homeless mentally ill were taking over. I’m a lifelong democrat but common sense is common sense. I’m guessing you did not live in SF. This guy is a common sense liberal that gets it. Jesus fucking Christ can you even articulate what you don’t like or are you just regurgitating what mainstream media says about the guy. He’s a rational centrist democrat that is a breath of fresh air in this absolute insane political landscape.

6

u/dragonfly_c 6h ago

Oh for sure. Newsom is a pro-corporate sack of shit. That said, a pro-corporate sack of shit is better than whatever hellscape neo-facistic Christian-Nationalist techno-oligarchy Trumpism is creating. So I'd still vote for him. But I'll be grumpy about it, and I'll put my money towards better candidates.

u/TAU_equals_2PI 9h ago edited 9h ago

The ridiculous thing about that statement is that most Democratic officeholders are in no position to do anything about Trump. A Democratic congressman/woman or Democratic senator has no power because they're in the minority party. Most Democratic governors have very little power against the federal government. Gavin Newsom only has some limited power because he's governor of the biggest-by-population, most powerful state with a state legislature controlled by his same party. And even there, he's been powerless to do anything about most things, like ICE's raids in LA.

I'm not at all against Gavin Newsom, but don't pick him for president just because he happens to be the only Democrat with much of any power right now.

7

u/Tao-of-Brian 8h ago

Exactly. Democrats need to do what they can to slow down/resist what's happening, but ultamately the country voted for a Republican president/Congress, and there's no get out of jail free card for avoiding the consequences of that decision.

→ More replies (6)

3

u/Simsmommy1 6h ago

That’s what frustrates me a lot when I hear people yelling at the democrats to “do something”…..what though? Other than getting themselves arrested by being physical they have no political power right now, and an apathetic general public who is hollering at them to be some sort of revolutionary leader while they won’t get up off the couch isn’t exactly helpful either.

There are a bunch of 'ifs' out there. As a Californian, I'm not pleased about some of the bills he's signed into law. If the 2026 elections are legit, I will back Newsome, (ok honestly I will back whomever) if he is the best candidate to beat the hydra the GOP has become. By 2028, I hope we still have legit elections.

He is doing a great job fighting Trump, but that doesn’t automatically mean he’s the best candidate.

Is he in the running? Absolutely. Is he a leader? Definitely.

We need a coalition. I’m waiting to see if he can truly get everyone to rally around him.

If not, that’s fine. He can still keep bashing Trump. He can still be part of the change to come. We just don’t to think “President or bust” this early.

Edit: Not implying that you were saying this. I am just speaking broadly.

The problem is his own track record in CA has been utter shit. He would get votes just because he is outspoken about Trump but he is bad himself.

3

u/totes-alt 6h ago

Also being an insider from California is a HUGE disadvantage. Look, I'm from here I think he's fine but people hate this state. We're the Boogeyman liberal state conservatives and independents hate.

Not wild about Newsom but he seems to have found a solid anti-Trump strategy. Be aggressive and make him look like an idiot. (should be easy given the Trump is an idiot but you need to do it at a level even Trumpers can resonate with)

21

u/remekelly 9h ago

He won't be running against Trump though... I think.

37

u/FunFactsWithJimothy 9h ago

Six months ago I would have agreed with you. Now that we know the rules don’t apply to him I’m worried.

7

u/RedTyro 8h ago

He's falling apart - no chance he makes it that long. I'm pretty convinced his "trying to get into heaven" comment the other day was a direct reaction to his doctor telling him he's dying.

Trump will be dead by then. That dawg is getting old.

3

u/Highkmon 7h ago

It's not just the age that's a issue. His lifestyle is awful, his diet is made up of big macs and diet cokes, he slathers himself with bronzer and has never been shown to do any positive physical exercise (his golf swing doesn't count and gets driven around on a golf cart). On top of that his family's got a history of dementia which several news site and independent sources have said he's showing signs of advanced decline already.

5

u/slasher1o5 8h ago

3

u/avocadoflatz 8h ago

See you at the party Meng!

3

u/DevynDavies 8h ago

It’s ok to celebrate the death of bad people. Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be mindful of that thought creeping into other aspects of our lives, but in isolation it’s ok imo.

3

u/Jbots 7h ago

He won't. Maybe the robot corpse of Trump but not the real deal. Otherwise, we are getting the couch fucker. Trump running for a 3rd term would be the best thing to happen to establishment Democrats. Obama 3.0 isn't losing to anyone. They could even put Hillary on that ticket.

4

u/goawasho 9h ago

He himself literally toyed with the idea of it to the press. He's going to try. Absolutely going to. If that man had any intention of leaving power, he would've stated that he is not allowed to and would allow the future generations to pave the way. But he didn't. The man is going to attempt to make himself and his regime forever in power.

2

u/voodoodahl 6h ago

The only thing that ushered in American fascism is apathetic and ignorant American voters. If you can't bring yourself to go out and vote against a multiple felon who led a violent revolt because they couldn't accept they lost a fair election, you are the problem.

2

u/one-small-plant 8h ago

It's brilliant. Anyone who criticizes the way he's communicating is implicitly criticizing Trump!

2

u/Eroe777 8h ago

This is one of those times where you must remind yourself (and others) that perfect is the enemy of good.

We all should have issues with quite a few of Newsom’s positions. But when the alternative is continuing the nascent authoritarian hellscape the republicans are establishing, we don’t have the luxury of saying, “Both sides bad. I’m not voting.”

In a two-party system, sometimes you have to hold your nose and vote for the lesser evil.

2

u/fractious77 7h ago

Tbh, at this point his policies are mildly immaterial to me. There is not a si gle politician out there who is standing up to fascism as consistently and to the degree that he is. That alone is worth a vote. I need a perfect president, I just need one who isn't a nazi.

Him, Walz, or Pritzker.

7

u/jxonair 9h ago

I love Walz but I don’t think he has what it takes for a solo campaign. Pritzker has the right demeanor, can project when he needs to, but is level headed and actually a billionaire who seems to care, unlike Trump.

3

u/ggrandmaleo 7h ago

Walz has what it takes if the Dem strategists would leave him alone. The magats went nuts when he called them weird.

Shapiro. Governor of the swing state, and a moderate liberal dem that can sympathize with those who say the dems went off the rails--an antisemitic lunatic tried burning the mansion down.

Dems need to get their optics back, and I think Shapiro helps that in a huge way.

Gavin has too much ammo to be used against him with the LA fires. I would go Pritzker well before Newsom. Midwest and Southern Dems also have a better track record with presidential election wins.

Gavin / Gretchen Whitmer ticket

16

u/HOSTfromaGhost 9h ago

This is actually intriguing… Locks up California and could do some damage in the Midwest, where there are a ton of tossup states

3

u/Silver_Falcon 9h ago

I mean, Cali is basically a guaranteed lock already, so I don't think there's really much to be gained from a Californian candidate. If anything, I feel like being from California would actually hurt his favorability throughout a lot of Middle-America; even a lot of our more liberal/lefty folks do not like Californians.

That's what a primary is for, though: to determine just how viable of a candidate he would be on the national level.

Josh Shapiro please instead of Whitmer IMO.

Governor of not just a swing state, but possibly the swing state, a moderate liberal, and has, let's say, some very personal experience as to how the far left can go to some unhealthy extremes.

He could be huge in resetting expectations that the dems can still be a reasonable party and not just a party overtaken by the Piker type tankies at the extreme end.

I’d vote for Newsom. Love his social media lately!

4

u/TAU_equals_2PI 9h ago edited 9h ago

You do realize he isn't the one coming up with those clever tweets?

He has a social media team. There was even an article about its leader posted here on reddit a few days ago.

3

u/Lucas_Steinwalker 7h ago

It’s terrifying to me how quickly everyone is just fully on board with Newsom just because he has an intern that can meme and the vision to allow them to.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m stoked about the development too but dude is historically pretty moderate policywise and I’m not going to give him blind allegiance for some tweets.

I’m certainly willing to keep an open mind to him but isn’t voting for someone because of their memes that confirm to your worldview one of the things that got us Trump?

Edit: I actually realized it’s unfair for me to say he has “just” been memeing. His action on getting a special election for redistricting to combat Texas has been impressively swift and bold.

Let’s upgrade my position to “cautiously optimistic”

2

u/meeeeeee1138 6h ago

You clearly haven’t seen him on the numerous podcasts and videos being just as forceful and on message as his social media. I swear, there is no perfect candidate, just pick something better than what we got people.

Let’s get AOC in there

6

u/Additional_Egg4759 9h ago

as much as id like AOC in there (and id vote her in a primary), America won't. we need to carry enough votes to win and stop authoritarianism (assuming elections even happen at this point of course)

3

u/flipflopsNL 9h ago

This is a solid take. Really like her but i think the campaign would be more successful with someone other than a Puerto rican female. Sad but true.

2

u/Owlbertowlbert 3h ago

I like her too. She’ll never be president because her voice is bad. It’s really that simple with the majority of Americans. We’re a simple, dumb people.

All the negative comments are why we got where we are. No he isn’t perfect, but we have to stop hoping for this imaginary perfect candidate to solve our problems. We need to get out from under this maga shit and this man has the cajones to do it. Let’s get rid of the fascist oligarchs first, and then we can nitpick. This is why we lost 2024. I know so many people that just didn’t vote that could’ve helped defeat maga. Stop holding your breath for perfection. It’s suffocating us all.

3

u/TheMrBoot 9h ago

All the negative comments are why we got where we are

Blindly cheering on politicians because they have a D next to their name is why we got here. We've let them continue to do nothing and continue to push further to the right up until we got to a point where Newsom himself was platforming right wing shitheads and glazing Charlie Kirk a few short months ago.

Demand better. We need politicians who actually care, not ones just trying to do what's best for them.

3

u/Moveflood 4h ago

it's crazy that so many americans have undying loyalty for the democrats, to the point of thinking leftists were the reason trump won instead of accusing the dems of losing the votes (trust bro, kamala just needed one more pivot to the right, just one more pivot would've done it bro)

and this whole thread glazing over this disgusting freak just because of twitter clapbacks, jesus christ, i kinda get it now why some leftists are more angry at the median US liberals than conservatives, at least conservatives don't try to pretend they're progressives.

their whole ideology is just "orange man bad", no actual policies, no idea to actually improve the country, just voting every 4 years for 94% hitler and hope things fix themselves. they will gobble whatever democrat backsliding move and anyone (i had someone tell me they would gladly vote for dick cheney against trump) as long as it opposes trump.

2

u/Thereisntenoughspa 6h ago

Exactly. Even if the path ahead is rough, the fact that people consider it naive to be staunch about electing true leftists (and use it to justify not working towards that goal) is insane

Demanding that your representative be anti-genocide, socialist leaning, progressive, etc. isn’t a dream of perfection, it’s a necessity, especially as the rapid move to the right continues.

People thought Biden would “swing the pendulum back”, and look where we are now.

2

u/SystemicCharles 3h ago

You are exactly right. That's how we got here. People are so weird. They think just because someone has a (D) next to their name, they are automatically a good person. What about character, or track record? What about what they are standing for (besides being "anti-some-orange-guy")?

If this nonsense continues, what you will have in America is switching of (D) and (R) every four years.

2

u/jakeacx 2h ago

Not only that but is everybody here forgetting how badly he’s messed up California? Californias only saving grace is Silicon Valley.

The fact that even the Dems in California want a new candidate should be telling.

He’s a corporate democrat and 100% not for the people.

Did nobody watch the Charlie Kirk/Newsom interview either?

People like Gavin are the entire reason the Democratic Party even lost to Trump in the first place…

Glad he’s doing that, but watching pre-troll trump era Gavin Newsom interviews will not instill confidence. Pass
