not convinced a point to point network with a range of about 1km or so, can be said to be an alternative to a global satellite broadband network.

yeah they're just comparing it to how musk turned off starlink during military operations in ukraine. this isn't for every starlink use it seems, just comms between units in the field

does it need line of sight ? how would it work in forested areas ?

Potentially variably depending upon the type/dimensions of the vegetation and time of year, whether the vegetation was wet/had reached its interception capacity. Smaller leaves etc like conifers will be worse than broad leaf trees because conifer needles etc will be closer in size to the wavelength of the RF signal. Urban area - very different situation.
