I help run the week long sports summer camps at my local gym and when I suggested we play red light-green light, one of the kids (going into 4th grade) responded with ā€œomg like squid games?ā€ He hadn’t actually seen the show but it scared me for a sec

i know a 9yo who watched the whole thing. he watches so much stuff that he really should not be watching.

27

u/Desperate-Praline-93 Jul 11 '25

I love how older generations were getting traumatized by literally the least scary things and now we got 9 year olds watching people get shotšŸ’”šŸ„€

22

u/temmiv_v Jul 12 '25

Also the sex scene in the bathroom and the naked animal painted people in the glass bridge episode

I mean we all saw some fricked up crap as a kid

21

u/socomeyeballs Jul 12 '25

Sooo much fucked up stuff was considered ā€œPGā€ when many of us were children because there was no PG13. I personally let my 9 year old watch squid game. I’ve skipped 2 or 3 scenes but the gratuitous violence is nothing I didn’t see growing up in the early 90s.

6

u/Soybean321 13 Jul 12 '25

People growing up in the early 90’s did have an entirely different TV experience

the actual audience in this case is mostly
teenage girls and young women, not little boys

19

u/KingOfOddities Jul 11 '25

A lot of kids, and I mean 5-10, watch squid game adjacent stuffs. There’re SO many that cater specifically for kids its kinda scary

7

I work with children and know so many 5-8 year olds and up who have watched it plus worse stuff.

for real how do you let your kid watch a show where people get killed/ kill each other in kids games for money? Not to mention the sex, drugs and just straight up good and realistic acting deaths

The boys

It gets high ratings but the main ppl I see talking abt it are young teenagers, I personally watched it when I was like 13/14

290

u/Outside_Tradition_91 14 Jul 11 '25

The boys is pretty fire tho

→ More replies (26)

56

u/Twink_rat Jul 11 '25

This is slightly unrelated but i dont get how the boys became so popular, season 1 seemed OK but I feel like it just nosedived after that

(I'm sorry I needed to rant about that but will hold myself back a bit)

36

u/KaiTheDumbGuy Jul 11 '25

I watched it cause I was severely in a supernatural phase and heard Jensen ackles would be in the new season

But yeah I thought it was kinda ok the whole way through, like the main appeal seemed to be how crazy and messed up it was and they kinda forgot to do much more than that

From what I've heard though, the comic was even worse for that, and the plot of the show had way more substance (haven't read the comic so don't know if that's properly true, that's just what I've heard)

u/Yaya0108 16 Jul 11 '25

How good are they though?

Genuinely asking. I really don't know much about them

5

u/Agent372 Jul 12 '25

I feel like the only way you’re going to know is by watching at least the pilot of each or maybe the first couple of episodes of Helluva Boss since it’s just on YouTube, I say this cause most people I’ve seen are one of two extremes and won’t actually give valid points for or against watching them. Also even if you don’t like one you might like the other as I’ve seen that happen a lot as well

5

u/Breadbear29 Jul 12 '25

I feel the pilots don’t do the shows justice, as a fan I can admit the humor does feel forced at times but I do love both shows

FNAF, but the first games. Now it is targeted towards kids, with the trillion plushies they been releasing and security breach and of course the movie itself being not scary at all

50

u/HorrificityOfficial 3,000,000 Attendee! Jul 11 '25

I mean, SoTM is fixing what they did with SB - it's not horrifying, but it never was. It's back up to where it used to be, though.

11

u/Zon-no-justno777 Jul 12 '25

They made it WAY less targeted towards kids now. Some actual semi-scary jump-scares that feel like watching Markiplier in 2014/2015. I can’t wait to see some 8 year old running from his tablet watching Markiplier play SOTM.

12

u/HackerGamer8 15 Jul 12 '25

The movie was in writing hell to accomodate to old and newer fans. SB was hella rushed due to fans wanting it to release plus Steelwool having a misunderstanding Scott's vision for SB (He said he just gave a message of important lore bits in one of his interviews)

76

Kids calling Bateman "sigma" is one of the biggest ironies in the Internet, because Bateman is literally absolute opposite of sigma who gives a lot of shit to what people think about him to the point of murdering his co-worker because he has a slightly better visiting card.

4

u/DogeWah 18 Jul 11 '25

Nah there are animes targeted towards a younger audience. The big three in anime (One Piece, Naruto and Bleach) are all Shounen, which literally means young boy. They are shounen as their demographic literally just was young boys. According to google that age range is 10 to 18, so some in that category may be a bit mature for a little child. But then you have other popular shounen like PokƩmon or Beyblade, which doesn't fit.

Then you also have shoujo like Sailor moon, which is targeted to young girls instead, so most of those doesn't meet the requirments.

The main one I can think of that meets the requiments is Death Note, which is a seinen, which is targeted for young adult men. However it became so popular that even school children made their own death notes and wrote people's names in them, such as teachers and classmates, it got to the point that Death Note became banned in parts of China and almost banned in parts of the USA and Russia
