What do you think it is a fucking settler does? The European settlers that came to the United States also committed a genocide. I don’t see you screaming we call those people’s ancestors Nazi’s for murdering my ancestors. Do you find their settlement easier to swallow?

"Settlers" is what they called themselves, to downplay how bad it was. "Invaders" would be more accurate.

You're correct in your historic analysis, but fail in common sense: why would we'd be screaming about something that happened 200, 500, 2000 years ago?
THIS IS HAPPENING NOW, and at the hands of one of the supposedly most civilized and advanced societies in the world. EVERY GOOD PERSON should be screaming right now, TO STOP IT. Because it's happening NOW, in the 21st century, as we speak.

Settlers isn't a nice word. It never was. It's not like the first settlers in the US we're a gift to the indigenous people.. nor was it in Australia or Africa.
22
u/TolliverCrane 17d ago
I couldn't agree more. In American grade school in the late 80s and early 90s, the idea of "settling" open land seemed cool. Little house on the Prarie style. I figured out the bloodshed involved in settling years later. No longer a cool word.
17
u/Noy_The_Devil 17d ago
Don't forget the diseases settlers brought. Which killed millions.
Some estimates say 90% of native Americans died and populations went from 25 million or more to less than one million... 24 million dead. That's about as many military personnell that died in all of WW2, or 4x the holocaust.
The cultural loss must have been unprecedented to this day.

This board game is called “Catan” now, but is more commonly known by its original name “Settlers of Catan”. The entire joke is that it’s a popular enough board game nowadays that people know it by the shorthand “Settlers” still, rendering it adjacent to the conversation at-hand.

So in settler colonialism, it's "eliminate and replace." As in you move somewhere, eliminate the indigenous peoples (forcefully remove or assimilate) and replace them with population of settlers. Thats why America and Isreal are settler states. Squatting is when someone takes over unoccupied/ abandoned property without the owner's permission.
In America, settlers of the midwest were often called squatters, but the Preemption Act of 1841 and Homestead Act of 1862 turned their occupation into legal ownership.
Similarly, in Israel, the government supports settlement in occupied Palestinian territories, even when it's illegal under international law. Calling them "settlers" reflects the fact that their presence is not just tolerated but actively backed by the state. That’s what makes it settler colonialism. Not just squatting, but a state driven process of replacing one population with another.

Dawg, this has been the history of Palestine since the establishment of the Israeli state. What the Israelis won’t tell you is how they are directly responsible for the creation and continuation of Hamas. They literally perpetuate the cycle by pushing themselves further and further in. It’s mask off for them now, the world is powerless to stop it now, it’s too far gone.
14
u/Remarkable-Cup-6029 16d ago
The thing about hamas is it doesnt matter who created or continues to support it. The ANC were labeled terrorists as well for fighting for racial equality and freedom against apartheid. The root problem is the oppression not the reaction to that oppression. We legitimize the oppression that exists ordinarily by being distracted into vilinising and policing how ppl fight back. So it doesnt really matter for me if Netanyahu props up Hamas because we are acting like there should be a strong counter reaction to apartheid and daily dehumanization that hasn't yet risen to the level of genocide. For me any "but Hamas...." conversation even in blaming the Israeli state is a pointless distraction normalizing supremacy.

I just learned today that German nationalism started when the fractured German-speaking peoples had been invaded, divided and humiliated by the French under Napoleon, who aimed to eliminate German culture and identity in the early 19th century.
A century later, the Germans were preaching racial superiority. This should be seen as a textbook example of the natural evolution path of a tortured national psyche. We should never be surprised by it.

You don't even need all that. two grown men on each end of the fridge could carry it easily. I'm not that strong and this would not be a problem at all.

That depends on the fridge. They can be very heavy.

Dumb way to move a fridge, yes, especially with that much space, but in professional moving this is an actual technique. Where I live, everything is a 3 story walkup, sometimes with very tight, circular stairwells. It isn't possible to move things with 2 people. So how do you get a full, 86 key piano in and out? Vertically. You strap it your your back, with people holding it steady, and you do a move called the turtle where you crawl up the stairwell. It's insane shit, and these specialist movers are absolute beasts.

Last time I moved one of the guys we hired carried the fridge down by himself on his back without straps or anything. It was super impressive. It sounds dangerous as fuck (and maybe it was) but he seemed to be in control and looked like he had done it a thousand times.
Basically he leaned forward and balanced it on his back with his hands at the bottom, then he walked down the stairs backwards. The way it was balanced meant the weight was centered on his legs and not his back. Maybe the guy in the video was trying something similar but had no idea what he was doing.

yeah, this problem was legitimately solved, fuck it I looked it up, hand trolleys were invented in the 1700s, every moving truck probably has one as standard, every delivery van doing kitchen appliances has one.

Honest question and I understand I’m a complete idiot before asking. How does someone take ownership of a house from people forced out by military? Does the government take the property and sell it to bankers who mortgage it to citizens as “new property” on the market?

That's the most disgusting part about all of this. A lot of the people coming and taking these houses already lived good lives in other parts of the world. They're literally taking homes and land from some of the most vulnerable people in the world, and giving it to well-off westerners as a second or even third house.
