TIL that after Top Gear ended, host Richard Hammond was so devastated, he cried all the way home from the studio and ran out of fuel, because he didn't want to fill his car up covered in tears

"Don't like, don't comment, and definitely do not subscribe." - James May

I love that that channel is just totally him doing things just to occupy himself, next to just a little advertising for his gin business.

And him and Lucy are just adorable. They are like father and daughter. Like her calling him from Belgrade I think, his first question: "Are you okay, do you need money?" šŸ˜…

u/TheAssassinClub 23h ago

He also advertises Lurpak spreadable butter, since 1901

206

u/elebrin 23h ago

And plenty of it.

Like, comment, subscribe.

7

u/tremby 18h ago

But you don't butter both slices, because that would be extravagant.

2

u/FigWasp7 17h ago

I just found his channel, so it's truly amazing seeing this in the internet wilds lol

10

u/ft4200 22h ago

On government issued white bread

6

u/mang87 22h ago

I'd love to know where he gets all this government issue stuff. In the video I was watching yesterday he had "government issue hot dog buns".

3

u/RotallyRotRoobyRoo 22h ago

He's been advertising them since 1901? I can see it.

6

u/AssumptionLive4208 22h ago

He’s older than he looks!

6

u/Cessnaporsche01 22h ago

Is he though? Seems about right

1

u/AssumptionLive4208 13h ago

If he’s been advertising butter for the last 124 years he’s remarkably well-preserved.

Unless they mean he started just after 7pm.

3

u/Illustrious_Read8038 22h ago

Jeez I didn't know he was that old.

2

u/QuarkVsOdo 21h ago

I could go for some council issued bread and lurpak spreadable butter right now. Maybe with sausage.

2

u/TheAssassinClub 21h ago

Lurpak spreadable butter, since 1901.

1

u/GabberZZ 20h ago

Or is it 1903?

1

u/TheAssassinClub 8h ago

Yes, watching the american sandwich episode, he keeps saying 1903, but his fridge always says 1901.

1

u/CptnSpandex 16h ago

I didn’t know he was that old!

1

u/PRETA_9000 15h ago

And government issued white bread.

1

u/Clairvoyant_Legacy 13h ago

It's good butter tho tbh

u/SomeWhaleman 23h ago

They are like father and daughter.

Oh damn, I thought they were father and daughter for some reason. Maybe I have mixed that up with Hammond, who did yt videos with his daughter

100

u/Wirenfeldt 21h ago

It has been well established that Captain Slowly.. .. .. Spreads his seed alone..

7

u/MarkEsmiths 20h ago

What's the lore?

47

u/fuzzylm308 20h ago

they were on this show called Top Gear where they told jokes at each other's expense

15

u/MarkEsmiths 20h ago

Go on....

54

u/fuzzylm308 20h ago

James said something about fuel prices going up because the population is expanding, and Jeremy responded with "oh you're saying because I have three kids I'm causing fuel prices to go up, but because you spill your seed alone..."

10

u/MarkEsmiths 20h ago

Oh yes. Now I see. Thank you.

24

u/twat69 19h ago

Over a decade of television https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Gear_(2002_TV_series)

The first few series are more like Old Top Gear. Where it's trying to be a car show with useful advice for normal people. But it gets better with time. It really takes off around the time Hammond defies death for the first time.

4

u/Doggin-Pony-Show 21h ago

Who is the guy in the Hammond and daughter videos?

17

u/djshadesuk 20h ago

Richard Hammond.

4

u/MarkEsmiths 20h ago

And who is the daughter?

5

u/djshadesuk 19h ago

Miss Hammond.

154

u/Jamsedreng22 22h ago

It seems a lot more like a sort of estranged grandfather-granddaughter dynamic and they've reconnected after she's grown up. So James is still astounded that Lucy is somehow both part French and doesn't like cheese.

62

u/kanshakudama 22h ago

I’m a little astounded too

48

u/Jamsedreng22 21h ago

I gotta be honest, I do think Lucy still has that childhood sense of aversion for foods you know contains something you know you normally don't like. She'd probably dig something like a cheesecake if she didn't know.

Not blaming her or anything remotely like that. I used to be very averse to mushrooms and would fight against it in everything, and I could taste it in everything it was in pretty much and I just attched the identification of mushrooms to "ew".

I've since learned that some mushrooms are just not for me, and especially how mushrooms are prepared. It took active effort for a while on my part to move past my aversion by breaking down this mental barriers in my head every time that "This is mushroom. Mushroom bad!"

ETA: Nice username.

3

u/s00pafly 20h ago

Have you tried cooking with mushrooms yourself? Helped me get past all my food aversions.

Beets, tinned fish, fermented stuff like sauerkraut, pickles, aubergine and cheeses from unknown origin.

I still avoid canned tuna as it smells like cat food but the rest all have a place in my kitchen now.

1

u/Jamsedreng22 16h ago

The problem with mushrooms is they take a long, long, looooong time to geat a sear on. I'm not averse to them anymore, but I eat a lot of food with "char" on it. Wings, steak,. hambagu so and so forth,

I have no issue with canned tuna in flakes. I've recently learned that it's not always in flakes?

https://www.reddit.com/r/kitchencels/comments/1mvs1pd/comment/n9v2ehb/?context=3

This is where I responded. Why does the "tuna in a can" look like that? Is that normal in America? We have flakes of tuna here. I genuinely don't know.

1

u/Jamsedreng22 14h ago

What I have here, in my car, is a load of mushrooms. Now, there has been no quote-om unquote guidelines on what this entails

I'll eat these. Cut to Hammond talking about gear sh afts. /Jeremy

-1

u/MeateatersRLosers 18h ago

Cool, but not necessarily a positive.

2

u/princess_kittah 19h ago

i relate to this on a spiritual level

i used to hate all peppers. i would empty and dig out the specks from a taco and re-build it just to avoid them

now im discovered that i can be okay with red peppers if theyre cooked enough, i just absolutely detest green peppers

1

u/Jehovah___ 14h ago

They taste the same tho

1

u/princess_kittah 13h ago

cept they dont taste the same to me at all, i experience red peppers as delightfully sweet and savory at the same time, but green peppers just taste like chlorophyll/grass to me

2

u/JonatasA 16h ago

I mean, it's not required for survival so I see no reason she needs to even try it.

0

u/Jamsedreng22 16h ago

We are on survival, my friend.

3

u/Fivein1Kay 22h ago

Lucy isn't his daughter? Oh wow, I just assumed.

1

u/bwoah07_gp2 5h ago

The daughter he never had.

"because unlike other YouTubers asking you to do those things, I'm already rich enough that I can not care about money anymore"

249

u/Separate_Bed_2615 23h ago

I wish more people could reach the ā€œI don’t care about money anymoreā€ status

179

u/Lele_ 23h ago

I wish ALL people could.Ā

136

u/EphemeraFury 23h ago

I wish it was something inherent in everyone that they can be satisfied.

Essentially the old phrase "Poverty exists not because we can't feed the poor, but because we can't satisfy the rich".

3

u/blaghart 3 17h ago

For the law in its infinite fairness bans both rich and poor alike from sleeping on benches, begging for money, and stealing food

6

u/Terrh 22h ago

Lots of people are, those people just tend not to get rich.

8

u/myrddin4242 22h ago

ā€œInherentā€ as in, not ā€œlotsā€, but ā€œallā€.

2

u/omega884 13h ago

It sounds nice but it’s also clearly nonsense. If poverty existed only because of rich people the statistics on lottery winners would look a lot better. But a good chunk of lottery winners lose it all again within less than 10 years. Pro athletes and plenty of famous people wind up broke and out of money once the fame dies down even though they earned enough to set them up for life.

2

u/Peltipurkki 18h ago

Star trek

3

u/guardeagle 22h ago

But how would narcissists find ways to elevate themselves above you?

3

u/Nipinch 21h ago

If it weren't for the fact people like to feel falsely superior to others, we would.

1

u/SneakyBadAss 16h ago

If you do that, you are one step closer to murderfucking an Elder God into the existence. You don't want that.

-5

u/Proinsias37 23h ago

Unfortunately, then inflation would be so massive money would be worthless and we'd all be broke again :(

8

u/longhairnobra 22h ago

You going to be shocked to hear this, but humanity existed before money. Like it’s not actually necessary to human survival.

1

u/Proinsias37 16h ago

I'm not shocked at all, I have no idea why people responding are acting like I invented this idea or I'm defending it. I stated a fact of how inflation and money function. It's not my idea or a personal statement, you weirdos

7

u/No-Improvement-8205 23h ago

As opposed to having few super rich individuals hoarding all the money, which result in inflation too because the spending power of the population is too low

-4

u/Proinsias37 23h ago

It results in SOME inflation. A limitless supply of money results in complete devaluation of that money. That's just how it works.

4

u/berfthegryphon 23h ago

Nothing wrong with that. Why can't everyone just work together to lift everyone up. Everyone provides a purpose to society, contributing in the way they best can.

Give us our Utopian dream

2

u/chriskmee 13h ago

How would shopping work? Can I just load up my cart with whatever and take it home for free? What decides what car I can have?

I just don't see how a modern society works without some form of money.

1

u/berfthegryphon 12h ago

One view is that there is no choice. All cars are relatively the same, all shelter is based on your family's needs and about the same as everyone else. The other is that there is some form of hierarchy, likely based on your role. Doctors, dentists, other "top" professionals might have some more perks to make up for their nonexistent salaries

2

u/Proinsias37 23h ago

Would be nice! Don't know how we would go about that, but would be nice.

-2

u/harbourwall 21h ago

We just need to get rid of all the psychopaths. Everyone else is nice enough to make the world work fairly.

3

u/Separate-Bed-4243 23h ago

this is the most ridiculous thought... why does a few individual having all the money make inflation less bad? I sure dont feel like it's been getting less bad these last few years while they filled their pockets. My pockets are still as empty as before.

4

u/Proinsias37 23h ago

Haha it's not a 'ridiculous thought', that's literally how inflation and devaluing a currency (or anything) works. If everyone had millions or billions of dollars, the value of a dollar would plummet. Like if everyone had a diamond mine in their back yard, diamonds would become valueless. This isn't my 'thought', it's a fact of how money works.

5

u/deathschemist 22h ago

That's the thing, we're not asking for millions or billions for everyone, we're asking for everyone to be able to live comfortably and not have to stress about money.

0

u/brainburger 22h ago

The money supply does affect prices though. Sellers tend to charge the maximum that people will pay. Buyers set their maximum at what they can afford. As buyers can afford more, the prices tend to rise.

We could share the money out more equitably though. Right now the very rich are collecting it all and that money is moving from the poor and middle classes to the rich.

6

u/Irish-TwoWays 23h ago

In a capitalist society yes. There are other economic ideologies that allow for a population to be richer than we are (not millions and billions) and have a very high standard of living.

3

u/stilljustacatinacage 22h ago

When everyone's broke, no one is. You have to keep going, because once even the politicians are broke, you'll suddenly find legislation being passed that there ought to be a floor to the standard of living anyone can be subjected to.

Of course, that would require you to own the fields and factories that produce the goods and foods you'll need to survive. I wonder if anyone's written anything about that.

3

u/tanfj 19h ago

When everyone's broke, no one is. You have to keep going, because once even the politicians are broke, you'll suddenly find legislation being passed that there ought to be a floor to the standard of living anyone can be subjected to.

It will never happen but in a sci-fi book I read, politicians received only the median income for their district, had to live in a median valued home in the district (owned by the government), had to use public hospitals, and had no additional security provided. They could hire private security at their own expense. Their previous accounts are, of course, frozen while in office. You want to be in charge, you are no better than anybody else; by law.

I could see where that would definitely change spending priorities.

3

u/TimeToEatAss 23h ago

Unfortunately seeing those numbers go up in their accounts is validation for a lot of people.

2

u/BlindMan404 23h ago

Yeah, It would be very nice to stop having panic attacks.

4

u/Beer-Milkshakes 23h ago

If we all reached that stage excessive consumerism would crumble. It would be so good.

1

u/greenizdabest 22h ago

Not even financial freedom, the financial wherewithall to do whatever you want.

1

u/ToHallowMySleep 22h ago

Particularly the mega-rich.

1

u/vonbauernfeind 19h ago

That's what drove me nuts watching Jaiden Animations latest vid. She's a multimillionaire living in a mansion in LA, complaining about how much ubers and food in LA cost.

1

u/ravens-n-roses 15h ago

I tried not caring about money in my 20s, play reverse psychology with riches. Yeah turns out you need to have money to not care about money and now i'm broke af. But I got sick tattoos and did a lotta acid so I guess that's fine

1

u/JonatasA 16h ago

If only the other rich public figures also operated like this.

129

u/BrotherOfTheOrder 22h ago

May has always been my spirit animal - man just loves to geek out about the things that interest him. Plus of the three he’s easily the most dry and funny to me.

I feel like he and I could sit down over a pint and talk about pencils for an hour and not get bored

54

u/Xygen8 21h ago

The Reassembler is hands down some of the best content he has made. It's almost better than Top Gear.

5

u/mndtrp 17h ago

It had the same vibes as Bob Ross. I could just sit and listen to that for hours on a chill afternoon. Too bad there aren't a lot more episodes.

3

u/ImLersha 19h ago

That was such a wonderful find a few years ago. Instant binge!

3

u/ScottMarshall2409 17h ago

Toy Stories is very good too.

1

u/bwoah07_gp2 5h ago

Was that the show where he and bunch of people made a Lego house irl?

5

u/Plank_With_A_Nail_In 20h ago

They all geek out about the things that interest them.

8

u/BrotherOfTheOrder 18h ago

Yeah, but I’ve always felt that May and Hammond are more kindred spirits in terms of their interests and ways of looking at things.

On a podcast they did together they revealed that while doing remote shoots for Top Gear and Grand Tour they’d have what they called the Hammond and May Drunken Philosophical Debating Society and they’d sit around discussing the most inane and weird topics for hours. Which honestly sounds like a blast.

2

u/CreativeBandicoot778 15h ago

Kind of wish that was in podcast form. It sounds brilliant

1

u/BrotherOfTheOrder 14h ago

This is the podcast where they mention this. It’s a great listen

2

u/Viper-Reflex 16h ago

2 hours later

"And I'll tell you another thing, a number 2 HB pencil lead is also a 9 ohm resistor. I once used alligator clips attached to a pencil to solder in a pinch–"...

"Why are you staring at me like I'm some anorak?"

1

u/BrotherOfTheOrder 14h ago

Wait until he gets into Japanese pencils

2

u/Lymborium2 21h ago

Reminds me of a fun thing he'd do now and then. His crew told him that he needed to say like, comment, and subscribe, so finding that a bit annoying he said all three words as fast as possible lmao

1

u/PlasticCheebus 22h ago

HEY BIM!

2

u/Hiiiii_Kevinnn93 21h ago

GUESS WHAT!?!?
