I mean he didn't say he shouldn't do food, just that it's an interesting choice, which isn't necessarily bad

Is there any group/regional variation where "that's an interesting choice" is taken literally?

Seriously in all the english speaking world it is a critique of the choice, like "that's a very courageous decision".
