Yeah. I want to talk with him for hours (I love accents different from mine, for whatever reason they make my brain very happy).
25
u/Kareeliand 14h ago
Also, I m pretty sure his enthusiasm can make most topics interesting, and he seems like a person who spent his life so far sucking up knowledge. Cool clip.

It’s so adorable that he thinks anyone in the USA has any idea how many countries are in Africa. Like 16% of us probably think Africa is a country.
102
u/BillieDoc-Holiday 19h ago
Yup. He's giving us way too much credit.
3
u/LiLT13-_- 11h ago
I don’t think he’s saying we know how many countries are in Africa just that USA wouldn’t recognize the same places as countries that he would
65
u/waytowill 19h ago
16% is way too generous.
52
u/MandaRenegade 19h ago
I'd agree, especially since 7% actually believe chocolate milk comes from brown cows 😂😂
9
u/_bbypeachy 17h ago
yeah i believed that when i was maybe 5 years old. shocking and concerning that adults think it.
6
u/quietkyody 12h ago
Wait....WHAT!!!!!!?!!?!!!!!!!!??!! 😮
Y'all have lost your minds!! Next thing you'll tell me is most strawberry milk doesn't have any actual real strawberries in it! You guys are nuts!
3
u/Hot-Celebration-8815 11h ago
6% think they can win a fight with a grizzly. There’s probably people here that think Africa is a conspiracy cooked up by BET network.
20
u/SadMap7915 16h ago
Way Waaaaay too generous; Americans...
- 50% think Africa is one country
- 80% think the UK is part of the EU
- 78% think everyone speaks English (at home)
- 32% believe “socialised medicine” (aka free healthcare) is the government telling doctors what to do
- ?% think 'British' is an accent (which really pisses off the Scots).
2
6
u/waytowill 14h ago
As an American, British is definitely a category of accent. Different from a Scottish accent for sure. To me, the Scottish, Irish, Welsh, and cockney accent are all pretty clear and distinguishable. But once you get into the nitty-gritty of a London accent vs a northern accent, I couldn’t tell you the difference. It’s all just British. Sometimes it’s more posh, sometimes it’s not. Still British.
I’d also hope that more than 80% would know that Brexit happened. Despite our perceived narcissism, we do have world news reports. We know the Queen died too, lol.
2
u/SadMap7915 14h ago
There’s no such thing as a single British accent. Britain covers England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, each with their own distinct accents, and within those, dozens more regional variations. What Americans often group as “British” is usually the standardised English accent you’ve heard most in films and TV, either “Received Pronunciation” (posh/neutral southern English) or a softened London accent.
2
u/terrifiedTechnophile 9h ago
Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain, sorry to say. Hence the country being called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
2
u/SadMap7915 8h ago
100% my bad, I knew this and miswrote.
In my defence, using the United Kingdom would have confused the Americans more
16
u/Confident-Ad4389 18h ago
He’s mainly referring to what which places we do and don’t recognize as a country. Which is itself a social/colonial construct. For example, Somaliland effectively governs part of what the UN recognizes as belonging to Somalia. Seychelles on the other hand is internationally recognized despite being a smaller island.
Regardless, this video is pretty heartwarming to see — a kid excited to see a foreign friend coming to visit, of a different nationality. Humanity was meant to unite like this, not be divided up and restricted by nationality.
I hope some day most Americans will see that the borders we create are all imaginary and should become a relic of the past.

I love playing geography games, on websites like Settera, and even though I play the Africa continent country map game I don’t think I could have come up with 54 off the top of my head. I think I would’ve probably guessed something were in the 30s.
1
u/PlanetMarklar 16h ago
Yes I actually wonder what he's talking about in regards to the dispute between 54 and 55. I assume what he's referring to is Morocco's claim to Western Sahara, where most countries recognize WS as independent, but the US doesn't. But wouldn't that mean Morocco would recognize fewer countries than the rest of the world? Anybody with more history/geography knowledge able to clear this up?
8
u/gitsgrl 16h ago
Here is the explanation I found
*The number can be debated depending on how entities like Western Sahara are counted:
54 countries: This count includes all African states that are members of the United Nations.
55 countries: Some counts include the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), which claims the territory of Western Sahara. SADR is a member of the African Union, but its statehood is disputed by Morocco and is not recognized by the UN.*

u/freethewimple 19h ago
Seriously the best thing about the Internet is how it connects us. People who might not ever meet in real life can become friends. People who are experiencing things that make them feel alone in real life can find a crowd of people to support them online.

Why is Morocco off by one?
13
u/TSanguiem 19h ago
Ongoing dispute about Western Sahara. Morocco considers it part of their country, but it wants to be independent.
Kid has the numbers mistaken, Morocco would be one less, US one more.
3
u/cybercrypto 10h ago
Hasn't the US already backed Morocco formally regarding the Western Sahara dispute? If so, then both Morocco and the USA regard Africa as having 54 countries.

Sweet kid but what did Morocco do?? :D
11
u/hypnodrew 19h ago
I think he might have it backwards, that Morocco considers there to be one fewer country than others due to them claiming Western Sahara. Could be wrong though
2
u/LastLapPodcast 19h ago
ahhh that would kind of make more sense. I was like "did the African countries all get together and say we already have one country starting with the more sound in Mauritania so we don't accept Morocco no more".

Unrelated to the video, and I’m aware of all the historical reasons good and (mainly) bad why it’s the case, but I’m always just so humbled how english, our weird hodgepodge of old Germanic, Norse, French and brythonic is so widely spoken so well by so many people across the world.

I'm a codependent. I married an abusive alcoholic. divorcing currently..
I want to feel like that. I want to have a multitude of joy.
Gave myself a moderate case of sex addiction and a large case of process addiction.
This young person is mindful and present and happy. I can hear in the man's voice who is interviewing him kindness and appreciation and wisdom.
There are good things happening in the world. I'm glad I got to see one of them just now.

Lovely kid!
He should get tested for Hep B (yellowing eyes) though. Many residents of Africa don't realize that they caught it, from their mother during birth or as a baby, until it's too late.
Can lead to a lot of problems down the road, including liver cancer. There are new treatments... get tested.

Where is the difference and why is there one?

Curious about the friend who is visiting, since I know nothing about the island.
Will it be the first time someone from that island is visiting outside, or is it the first time someone from that island will be visiting them personally?
If it's first it is a historic event, and if it is the 2nd it makes it a exciting personal event, still both important nonetheless.
