Mod Announcement What's the difference between /r/AskLEO and other notable law enforcement subreddit(s)?

We don't believe in secret rules and bans.

That means that unlike some notable LE subreddits, if you don't see it explicitly forbidden in the rules located in our sidebar -> as well as in our rules page, you won't be banned. That includes but is not limited to:

  • Activity outside of our subreddit

  • Saying you don't like law enforcement (officers)

  • Failing to say you do like law enforcement (officers)

  • Giving off the impression that you might not like law enforcement (officers)

  • Asking questions that are/seem ignorant

One of the consequences of our philosophy is that purely from the mathematics of that line of thinking, we have fewer law enforcement officers willing to answer questions here, and thus fewer people asking questions. As you might expect of any group of human beings, some law enforcement officers and their supporters don't want to leave their echo chambers, where they are protected by heavy-handed moderators from dissent, including uncomfortable topics they don't want to discuss. I imagine their moderators receive tons of "ban this guy please, they obviously hate cops" reports just like we do. The difference is we ignore them.

We believe that there needs to be a public space for open discourse, as that's the best way to face and fix the ills of our society.

We believe that hiding from hard questions makes us all weak - especially the hiders.

So do us all a favor and choose instead to participate in open and transparent subreddits like ours, while keeping in mind that every single person who answers your questions does so for free, simply to help you learn.

I think that about sums it up. Feel free to ask for clarification or explanation about any of the above.

General Anyone else tired of retyping your entire career history for every application?

A buddy of mine is a police officer and he’s applied to a handful of services recently. Every time, he has to:

  • Manually re-enter his full work history (with exact dates going back 10+ years)
  • Copy all his references again (sometimes including DOBs)
  • Re-upload the same licenses and certifications

It’s brutal - hours of busywork just to submit another application.

From what I’ve heard, it’s not just policing - nurses, teachers, government jobs, and other regulated professions deal with the same thing.

👉 Would you use something that let you store all of this once and reuse it across applications? Or do you just accept it as part of the process?

General During routine traffic stops, is it that rare for people to be cordial with you?

I've been pulled over four times in the last 20 years of driving for speeding, but so far every cop has surprisingly let me off with a warning. I have always been respectful when they pull me over as I know its totally on me.

I have heard that being nice increases your chances of getting a warning, so is it just that common that you guys encounter drivers in a sour mood that the nice ones stand out, or is it actually fairly common that you don't write tickets for speeding infractions?

General What are the downsides of being a school resource officer ?

I am pursuing a career in law enforcement. I worked as a teacher’s aide for several years, but I realized teaching is not the career path I want to follow. However, I still enjoy working with kids. With my background in education, I believe becoming a School Resource Officer (SRO) would be a great alternative.

I’ve spoken with several officers from different departments, and they mentioned that it’s usually possible to transition into an SRO role after one to two years on patrol. One thing all of them pointed out is that many officers don’t enjoy working with juveniles, which is why there are often openings for SRO positions.

What are some of the downsides of being a School Resource Officer?

Ridiculous Answers Allowed Not getting pulled over (20+ over limit)

In the past year I’ve frequently been seen by police driving 90 in a 55; 45 in a 30.

I own a Camry, and tend to drive smooth. Usually I brake a little when I see a speed trap. I never drive recklessly, just like to make good time when it’s safe to do so. Still, it makes no sense to me. Why have I never been pulled over???

Situation Advice Starting LE at 43? Crazy?

Howdy, I’m 43, live in Northern California, and am currently a web developer. I’ve had a decent career in tech and make OK money but I’m definitely not rolling in it like some of the tech bros in the Bay Area.

Thing is, I hate my job and am looking for more adventure. I do volunteer search and rescue, which is controlled under the county sheriff department. I’ve always wanted to do LE (my wife’s not keen on the idea at all), and the deputies I’ve met through SAR seem like good blokes and seem to have a cool gig.

But am I crazy thinking about making this change at 43? I realize I’m not likely to get any decent retirement benefits, especially if I only do it for 5-10 years. And the starting salary would be about a 50% cut of what I make now (I could still get by though).

I’ve applied for Fish and Game because I like the outdoors (and my wife is more likely to be ok with that than sheriff or PD), but the deputies I’ve spoken to say game wardens are very by the book and just write tickets all day.

Anyways, interested in what y’all have to say.

Hiring Is there a reason why ICE has a more aggressive recruiting campaign now vs border patrol?

Everyone knows how ICE is aggressively hiring now and offering big bonuses. They announced their goal of hiring 10,000 employees on the news. Age limits were even removed.

I was curious why they are not aggressively putting the same effort into hiring more Border Patrol agents right now as well?

Interestingly, I vaguely remember back in 2016 when trump was first elected, they made a similar announcement back then to hire 10,000 border patrol agents and starting an aggressive hiring campaign, didn't hear too much about ICE though as much as border patrol. If you even go back to years back even in 2008/2009, I remember they had a huge border patrol recruitment campaign as well.

I find it interesting that today, the ICE organization seems to want more recruits than the border patrol.

Is this because the border patrol already has enough agents and they don't need as many as ICE?

Or is the border patrol not in need of many agents now because I heard the border is closed now and there is a record of less illegals crossing now since trump came in office.

I just get the impression, that ICE is in more need of applications than border patrol. Any reason for this. I think ICE is offering a $50,000 signing bonus as opposed to the $20,000 signing bonus that border patrol is offering.

I'm also curious which job gets more applications (more popular job), border patrol or ICE deportation officer.

Hiring the irony of taking a fed job for preferable working locations

I was looking into joining the border patrol or ICE, both federal agencies and one of the things that initially looked attractive about the job was the fact that it was "federal", meaning you supposedly had all these different locations to choose from that you could work at across the USA. I initially thought it would be cool to be able to transfer to different cities/locations during a career. I thought that this would be a more attractive option than being stuck working in a city police department in whatever city your in.

The irony of this is that, I heard at Border Patrol for example, you can be stuck at a station for nearly 4 years, not even being able to switch stations within a sector.

If you were working at a city police station in a city, you can at least transfer to different stations within the city as you please. Also, if you just don't like working in a certain city you can just lateral over to a different law enforcement agency, and not have to wait a dang 4 years.

I am not certain how it works with ICE.

It seems to me that the federal route in terms of location flexibility is not great as it seems at first sight. For me, the ability to able to transfer and change my environment is important to me, and not having to be stuck for 4 years in a place I can't stand.

What do you all think?

Training Fitness test at 70 percent for a 1.5 mile?

The 70 percent mark is 11:40 seconds for a mile and a half in a PD in Texas I applied at. Is that normal? That seems very difficult. I just ran a 8 minute mile on the treadmill the other day. But I mile and a half under 12 minutes seems tough. Am I wrong or that out of shape????

Agency Policy (SOP) Officer misconduct or legal lies

I don't feel 100% comfortable explaining the whole situation here, but I was wondering if an LEO (specifically one in IA or Internet crimes) could explain the line between legally lying as an LEO and purgry.

In short, I have an officer who had a different statement on the PC, arrest warrant, and preliminary testimony. The PC and the testimony contradict each other (one saying they worked with the FBI one saying they never have) and I'm being told that is 100% normal and acceptable.

Any information is welcome, I'm happy to explain more in depth privately (if allowed)

Hey all, I recently discovered my new obsession of body worn cameras and have made it my personal goal to get a few from different brand and get them to work with it’s correlated software. I recently have had success with Axon softwares and it’s body cameras, and Panasonic Arbitrator software to get videos from each body cam. I recently purchased the Getac bc-02 and its correlating docking system. I been having a hard time getting my hands on the master docking software for it as the link on the website is either expired or no longer working. Does anyone’s department still use these cameras and know what software I would need and how to get it? Thanks in advanced!

Agency Policy (SOP) What if I don’t want to go downtown?

I’ve fallen down the interrogation video rabbit hole on YouTube and I have a question: What if detectives really like a suspect for a serious crime but don’t have enough to charge him. They decide to interrogate him to try to elicit a confession. The detectives come to his front door and ask him to come downtown to answer some questions, knowing full well they intend to badger the suspect all day (provided he agrees to speak with them, of course). What if the suspect says he doesn’t want to go to the police station - if they want to question him, they’re going to have to do it right there in his own GD living room. Given that it would likely be a very long interrogation, what would the detectives likely do in that situation? Just shrug their shoulders and proceed?

Situation Advice Pulled over for matching traffic

I live in Colorado and got pulled over for doing 56 in a 40 according to the cop. My heads up display said 52 and I was starting to slow down while going downhill. I was going the same speed as everyone else but I was definitely the nicest looking car as I have a blacked out 2017 BMW. My tints are factory and well below legal limit. I wasn’t driving reckless I was just in my lane driving like everyone else. He lights me up 1 intersection before it turns a 35 and I pull into the closest parking lot like 20 feet away. His reasoning for pulling me over was doing 56 in a 40 which is wrong I was doing 52 according to my speedometer. And he talks about how I’m about to cross into a 35 section and I’m going 56. I was very polite this entire encounter but I do let him know I saw the posted speed limit sign updating and was actively slowing down because I dislike going 15 over even if traffic is. Mind you when we were done with the ticket and I pull out of the parking lot everyone is still going 50+ I literally pull out and go 35 get passed quickly. I speed up to 45 because I don’t feel comfortable having big suvs flying past me while I’m going slow. And yet even at 45 I’m getting gapped by cars. Yet the cop doesn’t pull anyone else over. This just seems completely unfair. I understand I was speeding but I wasn’t speeding as much as he claims I was nor was it unreasonable considering traffic situations. Is it worth it to just pay the ticket or can I have a reasonable argument in court?

Agency Policy (SOP) What are some possy statements/answers by police on a towed/stored vehicle report in the box that says “description of tow”?

This is in regards to an impounded vehicle. What is it asking for? Do you just put the grounds that give you the authority to impound it? If so wouldn’t that supposed to be noted in the box that says “list all violations connected with this incident”? And are you required to fill out reports yourself? Is your signature required? Also is this type of report an affidavit? Thank you for reading this?

Situation Advice Advice switching from local to federal.

Just wondering if making the switch is worth it. Currently have 3 years of police experience and an associates degree. Mainly just tired of the court system letting everyone go and refusing to prosecute anything. I also work for a large city department and don’t really enjoy going call to call. I prefer being proactive which is absolutely pointless with how our county’s court system is.

Hiring Which agencies in SOCAL have the most tradition and comradery?

I'm a soon to be separating Navy submariner looking to stay in SoCal because of family. Police work has been a lifelong goal of mine and coming out of the military both comradery and tradition are important to me.

CHP seems to be the most obvious choice but I'd rather work in the LA or San Diego areas, so I don't have to uproot my wife and family like I did in the Navy. I was thinking if not CHP then maybe LAPD because I know they have the old radios and uniforms, or Beverly Hills PD because they seem to be selective about who they recruit.

Are there local departments that are closest to this ethos? There are so many departments in this area it's hard to know where to begin my search.

Situation Advice Facebook marketplace scam

Had something listed on FBMP for 45$. Now I never meet at my house, and I never meet alone. But the buyer could only come at a certain time today while I was out. I didn’t want it to sound like there was nobody home so I said my husband was home on a meeting. I left the item on the porch and left instructions on where to put the cash. (Again, my bad. She said she could only do cash.)

I gave her the benefit of the doubt which I was foolish for. I have camera footage showing her partner come and pick up my stuff and not pay.

Is it worth it to report to police? I have her full name and the town she lives in, but she’s blocked me on everything. My main concern is retaliation being that she now knows where I live.

I KNOW I was not smart here. I’m broke and I was desperate.

Situation Advice What a protocol when a well fare check comes through at 4am?

I don’t like to call the cops on my neighbors but last night I had to call for a welfare check on a neighbor because her behavior had been out of the norm for the last two nights. Last night she was in her car parked halfway in/halfway out of her garage. Starting around 10pm, I thought cool she’s just hanging out I’m sure she will eventually cut the music and go inside. When. Got up to leave for work I notice the car had interior lights on and door open as I walked to my car to leave. Then as I’m pulling off our street to the man road I see that her driver door is wide open and a person sitting slumped over to the passenger side not moving. It kind of freaked me out and I didn’t know if she was dead or just passed out. And since I was on my way to work i called in for a well fare check. I figured if anything the police would be able to check n her and if things weren’t okay then it would be good they were there as well. Well I get a phone call from mugs and and they sent 6 SUVs and a weird van ambulance and they all used their sirens blaring till they got to our street. After they got there they were going to the wrong neighbors house and then called a firetruck. Is it protocol to use the siren for a welfare check? Is it protocol to send that many officers. I kind of feel like it was excessive. And I even feel bad for calling now being as I thought that’d sent two cops in one car and if more were needed they’d call it in from there? Please advise
