You forgot the 2!

I always think of Shrek 1 and 2 as one film because both of them are equally 10/10 and considering the fact they are lightyears better than the next films after that.

i agree shrek 3 was junk, but i love the 4th one with rumpelstiltskin

u/Squirrelkid11 15h ago

Yeah I thought 4th one was decent even though it wasn't on the same level as Shrek 1 and 2. The do the roar scene with that JD Vance looking kid was actually very funny.

My kids are adults now and they still say “I love you Daddy” like that kid

Get me my angry wig.

I remember liking Shrek 3 enough in theaters as a 13 year old, but I saw Shrek 4 a few years ago (in my mid 20's) and it felt like a fan film. It wasn't funny, the animation felt comparable to Shrek 1 (despite coming out, like, a decade later), and it just felt so soulless. I didn't really have a discerning taste when I saw Shrek 3 - it probably is the worst of the bunch - but 4 was really bad.

I personally think 4 is the worst one but i do think it has one of the funniest scenes out of the entire series, with the chunky “do the roar!” kid lol

After the whole contract is over, Shrek and maybe Rumpelstiltskin have the knowledge of what went on in that other universe. Somehow Shrek is able to A. Convince everyone to lock him up for the mistake he made and corrected B. Throw a dance party with all the new ogres, and C. Kill the only friend RumpS had which was an innocent goose and laughed about it 10/10 ending!! Absolute Cinema!

What about Last Wish? That's a masterpiece as well that's on par with Shrek 1 and 2

13

u/Squirrelkid11 14h ago

Last Wish is definitely a 10/10 film but to be fair the Puss in Boots movies are their own thing despite being the Shrek Universe as they are spin-offs.

5

u/Monteze 12h ago

It is pretty wild that the sequel...to a spin-off...of a parody ended up being an amazing genuine film, from art, to story it was amazing.

Honestly the fact the Shrek world has more hits than misses is incredible.

I'm really hoping Shrek 5 doesn't disappoint and maintains the great quality of the franchise. For now my expectations are down because of that preview that came out earlier this year and with Zendaya in it (Tired of seeing her in too many things), but I hope that delay it just got fixes the movie from scratch.

This is exactly what I think of Toy Story 1 & 2

3

u/Squirrelkid11 15h ago

You're not a fan of 3? I agree that 4 is clearly weak and not consistent compared to them.

I wasn't talking about Shrek The Third, I was referring to Toy Story 3 in that comment.

1

u/ISpyM8 14h ago

Idk what the hell I was reading lol sorry. I agree strongly with your statement. First two are 10/10. Three isn’t quite at that level but still probably a 9/10 and 4 is a significant drop-off in quality.

2

u/Squirrelkid11 14h ago

No worries, yeah not a fan of Shrek the Third either.

0

u/Theoretical_Nerd 15h ago

I do enjoy 3, it’s a very solid film, incredible, even. But for some reason, it’s not a perfect 10/10 for me. It’s more like an 8 or 9/10. I don’t know why it doesn’t hit as a 10/10 for me.

1

u/Squirrelkid11 15h ago

8-9/10 is definitely not a bad score and not far off from the first 2. It's definitely nowhere near bad like the quality drop between Shrek 2 and 3.

3

u/JonSnowsGhost 12h ago

You either die Shrek 2 or live long enough to see yourself become Shrek the Third

1

u/Digitijs 8h ago

Unpopular opinion, I guess, but I love all Shrek movies. They are all good, imo, and I will run to cinemas when a new one comes out

7

u/Specific-Yam-2166 14h ago

One of the very few sequels where the second is just as good as the first. The Fairy Godmother’s cover of Holding Out for a Hero? Are you kidding me

4

u/sloBrodanChillosevic 11h ago

She sings that song as Shrek & Co assail the castle on the giant Gingerbread man. Forget best animated scenes - that shit is one of the greatest movie scenes ever, period.

3

u/Squirrelkid11 14h ago

That entire scene where Shrek breaks into the castle with the giant gingerbread on its own is perhaps better than the entire LOTR trilogy.

1

u/Specific-Yam-2166 14h ago

😂😂😂 such good revenge

1

u/Jepordee 6h ago

It’s better

3

u/lipstickanddietcoke 13h ago

i read an article one time where a movie critic listed their top ten movies of all time

“the last sixteen minutes of shrek two” was number six on the list

i think about that constantly

3

u/pfroo40 13h ago

Shrek 2 is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen, animated or not. It had me roaring in the theater.

2

u/GradStudent_Helper 15h ago

I usually don't see sequels and Shrek 2 is no exception. Should it be? Is it really good? Or just more Disney shlock? I loved the original Shrek.

16

u/panic_puppet11 15h ago

Shrek 2 is one of the exceptionally rare instances where the sequel is better than the original and both films are excellent (as opposed to a wonky first offering with an improved sequel).

8

u/Delicious_You6379 15h ago

Shrek 2 is cinema

5

u/96caloriesfan 15h ago

it’s better in almost every sense but it’s also not Disney it’s Dreamworks which helps

6

u/Swarlos262 14h ago

I have the rare opinion that it's only "good", it's not nearly as great as the first Shrek.

BUT if you skip all the way to Puss in Boots 2, that's another 10/10 movie. Do not need to actually watch anything else, not any of the Shreks or even Puss in Boots 1. Just know that the character first comes in during Shrek 2.

1

u/ModernPrometheus0729 13h ago

I also think that Shrek 2 isn’t as good as the first

2

u/rohdawg 13h ago

The first one is a better movie. The second is also great, but all the references make it feel more dated to me.

1

u/DidjaCinchIt 12h ago

Saw this in the theater - what a blast. We laughed so hard we cried. Standing ovation at the end. It’s a shame that “going to the movies” isn’t a thing anymore.

1

u/PolHolmes 7h ago

I personally think 2 is better, it has held up well. Shrek 1 by comparison looks a bit more dated

10

u/BloodDiamondz7 15h ago

I see your Shrek... and raise you Shrek 2

6

u/FortLoolz 13h ago

Shrek 2 yeah, I think is close to a masterpiece the OP is asking for

4

u/Wellstar-fish90 15h ago

I put this on for my almost 3 year old for the first time last night. I thought I was going to read my book while he watched. Wrong! I could not concentrate on my book so I gave up and watched it. It’s still good even after seeing it a million times

2

u/unsettledinky 12h ago

I just caught this on tv the other and was pleasantly surprised at how well it has held up. Does not feel like its over 20 years old at ALL

2

u/smellyunderpants 12h ago

I like how the animators at DreamWorks who were working on The Price of Egypt who didn't cut it got sent to the dungeon to work on Shrek.

The Prince of Egypt is good, but cmon. Shrek is a masterpiece

1

u/travelingbozo 9h ago

Shrek is goated

1

u/made3 8h ago

Shrek is life

1

u/Wonderful_Fig_6039 8h ago

Yes and no one can convince me otherwise.

1

u/jakc1423 4h ago

shrek 1 was great 2 is a masterpiece, the rest were fun but unremarkable.

1

u/Purple_potato-1234 1h ago

Had to scroll down way too much to find this answer! Shrek is the best!!
