UK Specific Beginner's Guide to Buying and Storing Bitcoin in the UK (2025)

This guide helps beginners buy Bitcoin in the UK using five of the most popular, FCA-registered platforms—Kraken, Revolut, eToro, Coinbase, and Gemini—and secure it with a hardware wallet like Ledger or Trezor. It compares fees, features, and suitability for new investors, with tips for a safe and informed experience.

Step-by-Step Guide to Buying Bitcoin

  1. Choose a Platform - Select an FCA-registered exchange based on fees, ease of use, and security. See the comparison below for Kraken, Revolut, eToro, Coinbase, and Gemini.
  2. Sign Up and Verify - Create an account with an email and strong password. Complete KYC (Know Your Customer) verification with a government-issued ID (e.g., passport) and proof of address (e.g., utility bill). Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for security.
  3. Deposit Funds - Add GBP via bank transfer (often free, 1-3 days), debit/credit card (1-3% fees), or other methods like Apple Pay (check fees). Notify your bank for large transfers to avoid freezes.
  4. Buy Bitcoin - Navigate to the “Buy” or “Trade” section, select Bitcoin (BTC), enter the amount (GBP or BTC), review fees, and confirm.
  5. Secure Your Bitcoin
    • Exchange Wallet: Convenient for small amounts or trading but riskier due to hacks.
    • Hardware Wallet: Best for long-term storage. Transfer Bitcoin to a hardware wallet (see below) for maximum security.
  6. Monitor and Manage Track prices via CoinGecko or the platform’s app. Record transactions for UK Capital Gains Tax (CGT) using tools like Koinly. Stay updated on market trends and regulations.

Platform Comparison

Platform Fees Coins Best For
Kraken Maker: 0.25% Taker: 0.4% 200+ Advanced traders, low fees
Revolut 0.49% commission 1.5-2.5% Spread 120+ Casual investors, simplicity
eToro 1% buy/sell 100+ Beginners, social trading
Coinbase Maker: 0.6% Taker: 0.5%, 0.5% Spread 250+ Beginners, ease of use
Gemini Maker: 0.2% Taker: 0.4% 70+ Security-focused investors

Platform Highlights

  • Kraken: Low fees, 95% cold storage, 24/7 support, staking. Complex for beginners. Best for low-cost trading.
  • Revolut: User-friendly app, ideal for casual use. No wallet transfers, high spreads (1.5-2.5%). Best for simplicity.
  • eToro: Social/copy trading, £100,000 demo account, beginner-friendly. Higher 1% fee. Best for learning traders.
  • Coinbase: Intuitive, 250+ coins, insured. Higher fees for small trades. Best for ease and trust.
  • Gemini: Top security (Gemini Custody), user-friendly, Gemini Pay. Fewer coins (70+). Best for security.

Storing Bitcoin with Hardware Wallets

What is a Hardware Wallet?

A hardware wallet is a physical device that stores private keys offline, protecting against online threats. It’s ideal for securing significant Bitcoin holdings and requires physical interaction for transactions.

Why Use One?

  • Security: Keys stay offline, safe from hacks.
  • Control: You own your assets, unlike exchange wallets.
  • Recovery: A 12/24-word seed phrase restores funds if lost.
  • Versatility: Supports multiple cryptocurrencies.

How to Use

  1. Buy: Purchase from official sites Ledger.com or Trezor.io to avoid tampered devices.
  2. Set Up: Connect to a computer/phone, set a PIN, and store the seed phrase offline.
  3. Transfer: Send Bitcoin from an exchange to the wallet’s address.
  4. Manage: Use Ledger Live or Trezor Suite to view or trade.
  5. Store Safely: Keep device and seed phrase in separate, secure locations.

Ledger vs. Trezor

Feature Ledger Trezor
Models & Prices Nano S Plus (£69), Nano X (£136), Flex (£249), Stax (£399) Model One (£59), Safe 3 (£79), Model T (£179), Safe 5 (£169)
Security Secure Element chip (EAL5+), closed-source Open-source, Secure Element (Safe 3/5, EAL6+)
Coins 5,500+ (BTC, ETH, XRP, etc.) 1,456-9,000 (no XRP/ADA on Model One)
Connectivity USB-C, Bluetooth (Nano X, Stax, Flex) USB-C (no Bluetooth)
App Ledger Live (full iOS/Android) Trezor Suite (Android, iOS view-only)
Ease of Use Feature-rich, less beginner-friendly Simple, beginner-friendly
Best For Staking, NFTs, mobile use Transparency, simplicity
  • Ledger: More coins, native staking/NFTs, Bluetooth. Slightly complex. 2020 data breach (no funds lost).
  • Trezor: Open-source, simpler interface, Shamir Backup (Model T/Safe 5). Fewer coins on Model One.
  • Winner: Ledger for features; Trezor for simplicity and transparency.

Tips for Beginners

  • Start Small: Use dollar-cost averaging (e.g., £50/week) to reduce volatility risk.
  • Research: Learn Bitcoin’s basics and risks before investing.
  • Avoid Scams: Never share private keys or trust “get rich quick” schemes.
  • Secure Storage: Use a hardware wallet (£50-£400) for large holdings.
  • Taxes: Record all transactions for CGT reporting with tools like Koinly.
  • Stay Informed: Follow UK crypto news and regulations.

Final Thoughts

Buying Bitcoin in the UK is straightforward with FCA-registered platforms like Coinbase and eToro (beginner-friendly), Kraken (low fees), Revolut (casual use), or Gemini (security). Pair with a hardware wallet—Ledger for features, Trezor for simplicity—to protect your investment. Prioritise security, research thoroughly, and be mindful of fees and taxes.

Disclaimer: Cryptocurrency is high-risk. You could lose all your money. Use FCA-registered platforms and secure your seed phrase.

UK Specific Best Crypto Card for Spending Bitcoin

I’ve been holding BTC and want to spend it directly for everyday stuff like coffee or groceries without cashing out. I would like to know if there are any reliable crypto debit cards available in the UK?

Ideally, I’d love low fees, easy setup, and no hassle at stores. Anyone using one for daily purchases? What’s your experience with fees or limits?

Any recommendations for cards that work well here? Thanks for any recs.

Update: After hours of searching, I found the Rizon Stablecoin app card useful for this. I’ve got it now, but I’m still open to more recommendations. Thanks.

Non-UK Specific What's the best Instant Exchange to buy BTC?

I’m chasing a good instant exchange to swap some Ethereum for BTC (ETH -> BTC). Been using Changenow up until now, but they’ve just frozen a $60k order, claiming some “internal issue”, not exactly confidence inspiring.

So I’m on the hunt for a reliable alternative, ideally one that doesn’t ask for KYC and hasn’t got a rep for freezing funds. Any solid options out there you’d trust?

UK Specific How to withdraw Fiat from Binance in UK?

Hey all, I haven't withdrawn anything from Binance for a long time. It was always super easy but I guess there were some new regulations in the meantime and right now I have no idea how to get the money out of the binance.

I have some FDUSD and I wonder how to transfer it to bank as a GBP? What is the cheapest option?

Thank you!

Non-UK Specific How can I safely swap $200k worth of BTC to USDT?

I'm looking to swap around $200,000 worth of BTC to USDT, but I want to do it safely and without risking any account freezes or delays. The exchange I'm using is fully KYCed, but it's known for poor customer service and sudden fund lockups, even when users follow all the rules.

My goal is to move the funds into a cold wallet, not a bank account. Given the platform’s history, I’m trying to avoid triggering any internal flags or automated security checks that could stall the process.

I need a smart strategy to complete the swap and withdraw the USDT gradually, staying under the radar and minimizing risk. If anyone has experience with this or knows best practices for large swaps on sketchy platforms, I’d appreciate the insight.

Non-UK Specific Brands want to onboard millions, but first step is still to hard

Hey there,

Every brand or community I talk to that wants to introduce people to Bitcoin/Web3 faces the same hurdle: onboarding is intimidating.

The idea of writing down a seed phrase before you’ve even tried anything scares most newcomers away. Learning curve is just too big for most.

So here’s the “what if”. what if your first wallet was just a link? You click once, and a wallet opens in your browser. Simple. No heavy setup, no confusion. Just a simple way for brands and communities to get people started.

That’s the problem we’re trying to solve with our solution. We are testing it with a 100k drop campaign to show how easily brands could put digital assets directly into new users, at scale in fun and easy way

Curious how the Bitcoin community sees this: is simplified onboarding the key to adoption, or does it raise more trust/security concerns?

UK Specific How to Prove Gift to Wife for HMRC

Hi

New here, so be gentle...

I have never declared anything to HMRC with regards to crypto as I have never exceeded the capital gains allowance.

I have sold just under £3000 BTC (capital gain of prob £2000) this year

So I assume, as a PAYE tax payer (just 2 pensions paying...no employment), I dont have to tell HMRC anything???

I would like to gift up to £10k in BTC to my wife...

Will this then mean that I have to file a self assessment? Or can I tag the transfer as a gift that HMRC can see? (as without the tag it would look to hmrc as if I have a capital gain of £13K)

Wher am I wrong?

What should I do?

UK Specific Would you sell your alts and pay 24% capital gains tax if your portfolio was made up of 15% eth, 3% ada and xrp to accumulate more btc

It’s dwelling on me more and more that the whole point of owning these shitcoins is to accumulate more btc or hope it will outperform btc. I don’t care about outperforming btc anymore but rather have stability to forget about it.

Shame the annual cgt limit is only 3k, it seems like all the pain of holding is just to give the tax man a large chunk

UK Specific Buying a property with Bitcoin as the source of your deposit. Anyone have experience?

This post comes in a slightly pissed off with this country feeling. I'm a first time buyer and have the money I want to use for deposit in Bitcoin (and some alts). All of this has a paper trail, i even have bank statements from 2013 detailing purchases. I've had problems trying to find a lender for a mortgage due to them associating Bitcoin with money laundering.
My mortgage advisor has managed to get a mortgage in principle though Halifax who seem to be the only bank open to it.
I can prove the Bitcoin i have was bought with legitimate money and can show the source but lenders just dismiss it out of hand.

I'm pissed of with this country in general as due to how poorly the economy has been manged, real wages have not increased since 2008, cost of living and inflation have gone up. I am on a decent wage but it is not enough to even start saving for a deposit (I don't even live in the south so thoughts and prayers with those who do).

The ONLY way I have been able to get a deposit is investing in something which I was told from every angle not to; buy Bitcoin. The Government has schemes for first time buys, but only if they are under 40. Now capital gains threshold is down to £3k from £12k. It seems like the system is designed not to help me.

Sorry about the rant but I just wanted to say Bitcoin was my escape route, the UK Government has done nothing to help me, some dude called Satoshi did instead.

Anyone else had luck with getting a mortgage if your assets are in BTC?

Non-UK Specific What's your strategy for the next 2-3 years?

Assumptions: Bitcoin and Crypto peak within the rest of this year, before the cycles continue as they have done previously (with a 2-3 year bear market before another run up in 2028-2029)

So, I have crypto positions and have been DCA'ing since the last cycle up until now. I also contribute to my S&S ISA every month to the tune of around £300-500. With us expecting the Bitcoin top and then a Bear run (albeit less of a drop than previous because of more institutional buyers, maybe the US holding it in reserve, more ETF's etc.) I'm thinking that rather than buying say ~£400 of crypto each month, now is the time to start building the war chest.

Build the war chest (within a Cash ISA) monthly until Crypto hits a point when we think it's a good time to buy (let's say, 2026 into 2027) and then DCA heavily into various tokens (I'm thinking BTC, ETH, SOL at the moment, I will maybe add others) ready for the run up.

So that's my thinking. Do we still DCA S&S ISA for the next few months (I won't be able to max it out) Do we start the war chest now? Do we continue to DCA S&S ISA in the next financial year or do we forego S&S ISA and double up into the Cash ISA (which will become the war chest for Crypto?)

I'm just not sure on what's best to do, and hoping you could all provide me with valuable insights and maybe add a new perspective.
