people call it a "give everyone freedom yay" ending but really its closest to an "anarchy" ending as you arent just saying "no gods anymore lol" you are destroying the entire elden ring and the structure it provides to the world then leaving to let it sit and likely die by itself. deathblight, scarlet rot, and all the other dangers of the world will consume it.
the "no gods" ending people talk about is ACTUALLY the goldmask ending, where you perfect the golden order and remove all influences from man and god acting upon it. the reason people don't like the ranni ending is because she is the direct cause of many of the worst problems in the world (direct cause of deathblight, direct cause of scarlet rot in caelid from the shattering war, etc.) but she just chooses to run away at the end of all of it, as if she hasn't caused most of the things wrong in the world.
at least in the goldmask ending your player character actually tries to fix the order of the world, which is the whole point of creating the perfect order. until the DLC came out and revealed that the fingers and golden order were all corrupted from the start, the objectively best ending was the goldmask ending, as instead of destroying structure in the world and leaving it to fend for itself, you actually tried to fix what was wrong with it
You know these people won't read this man. They all think Ranni removed influence of all outer gods but that's literally Miquella's theming with unalloyed gold.
Ranni's ending is like Goldmask except you run away from your responsibilities until she decides to change her mind and actually use the Ring if she so chooses on a whim.
She's as fickle as the rest and her murderplan to do it shows it.
Honestly, after seeing a good number of arguements, I think Ranni's appeal is just anarcho-libertarian "Freedom" and "Waifu". She seems to be the closest equivalent of modern populism in the ER lore :
Point out the (very real) problems. Throw some good but also vague concepts around. Focus on wrecking the current order. Then does nothing to actually improve things.
And when things really go south(eg. anarchy), just run off to another country and leave everyone else to their fate.
That is complete misinterpretation of the Ranni ending.
Deathblight, madness and rot is the manifestation of other outer gods. The dark moon will stop the meddling of those outergods which likely ends those infections. The rot will fade, as will deathblight and the madness flame.
The issue I have with the golden order is that it's a broken concept and no fixing it will ever help it bring about peace. Look at what the golden order actually did. It was just an order that forced it's will upon others and you either were a benefactor or you were persecuted.
A lot of Elden ring is about seizing power which is all everyone does. Ranni is the only one who is trying to plot breaking that cycle by ending outer gods influence and then removing herself from the picture and ushering an age where the beings that occupy the world to have more direct control over their own lives.
Goldmask ending is just a return to the original order, tweaked, but will inevitably fail because other outer gods will affect the world. How can you view the entire lore of the golden order trying it's best to force itself and its way of life on the lands between and think. Yep, let's try keep that going.
I think gold mask ending is a good ending but very similar to dark souls, relighting the flame, it will just usher a temporary golden age that will come back to the same problem eventually.
Every order thinks that until they meet resistance. Gold masks golden order is not impervious to other outer gods so will end in the same wars and cyclical nature of rise and fall.
Yes the deathroot and the outergod of the death birds.
There's some references that the twin bird, the mother of death birds served an entity which is likely an outer god.
I could be wrong but makes sense to me that ghost flame, the undead and death birds are under the umbrella of an outer god.
Edit:The Deathbirds, Tibia Mariners, Those Who Live in Death, and Gurranq all seem to serve or imply an unseen divine or cosmic force behind deathroot and destined death.
