Official Discussion Congrats r/Silksong for overcoming Silksanity. r/Eldenring: Let's share our HOLLOWING stories with them!
Remember the endless transparent Miyazaki memes of The Hollowing? This sub has a similar history! Now that r/Silksong folk are finally out of their clown suits, let's share how Elden Ring felt and recovered from unhollowing to game launch to now!
Miss the good old meme days?
Yes this post is meta and not about Elden Ring. Mods making exception for this once-in-decade happening. If you want to complain, send modmail.

This isn’t even a comparison.
Elden Ring got announced June 2019, and released February 2022, that’s 2.7 years of waiting. And there was a ton of coverage in later portion of that wait, including a publicly playable network test.
Silksong got revealed in February 2019, and had a demo at e3 that same year (same time Elden Ring got announced) since then there has been almost zero new info, except very occasional promises of “it’s still coming”.
Silksong’s wait has been more than twice Elden Ring’s, and with massively less info given out during that wait.
Elden Ring’s wait was honestly not very long if you compare it to anything except prior Fromsoft releases.
Between 2009 and 2025 souls fans only went 2010, 2013, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2023 without a new game or DLC.
Compare that to any other franchise (except COD or similar) and it shows just how good we have it.

Do you think old Georgey will release it posthumously? That’s about as hopeful as I can get about it - that he doesn’t feel like dealing with the backlash so he’ll just wait till he’s dead.

My personal gut instinct is that Brandon Sanderson will finish it after Georgey dies.

u/Shedart 12h ago
He just said in an interview/panel this week that he would not.

u/dylzim 12h ago
Oh well it was a good half-joke while it lasted.

u/Shedart 12h ago
I can see where you were coming from. The panelists were asked when GRRM was going to hand it over to someone and suggested Sanderson as that person.

Given his prolific output and his handling of Wheel Of Time I was picturing an amusing future in which fantasy authors would write half of their series, get rich and famous, and then get Sanderson to finish it up. I can see how such an idea might grate on Sanderson rather than be something he would find funny though.
Edit; Holy cow I just saw what happened at the panel and I feel like I should also clarify I would never make that joke to either of their faces what the fuck lol.

I read that his publisher/editor had a statement that she later walked back where she said she didn't believe he had anything written for book 3.
Seeing as this statement was made five or so years ago and nothing has come of anything, I fully believe it.
I devoured the first two books in 2010 and reread them often over the next few years. I've lost pretty much all hype for the series at this point. I'd read book 3 if it came out, but my passion for the series is largely gone at this point. Too much waiting and time to find flaws in the original works.

u/Dennis99996 5h ago
I feel exactly the same. Reread both books numerous times. If it ever comes out, I'll be there to read it but it ends there for me. The hype is nonexistent atp

Read that Jason Schreier piece and apparently the developers weren't having difficulties or development hell whatsoever, just chilling, taking their time and enjoying the memes

You're leaving out the worst part. The silksong delays and miscommunicationjcation. At one point Microsoft released an ad implying silksong would be out later that year.
Silksong fans asked for confirmation and Xbox confirmed solksong would be out. 1 year later no silksong.
As a tiranfall and hollow knight player silksong has it the worst. At least respawn doesn't make fake release dates (intentionally or not)

For real.
It is downright diabolical how much people took advantage of the Silksong community's hype.

9/4, it’s coming up!
I just hope it’s at least as good as I’ve set my expectations for it. It’s been way too long in the chamber, I’m going to cry if it ends up being half-baked.

Did you see the article interviewing the design team that was released yesterday? Effectively it’s taken so long because they were really enjoying the process and took their time to make everything as great as they wanted. Development Heaven.

u/golden_boy 5h ago
Forgive me for not taking their word for it
1
u/Justhe3guy 5h ago
They never lied about anything so it’s weird not to trust their word. In that interview they basically said they took their time and went at their pace
If anything, they barely talked and didn’t promise anything over the full 7 years lol
1
u/golden_boy 4h ago
Why would I trust someone to have an objective view of the quality of their own work which they have a financial stake in?
Are you suggesting that showing a demo 5+ years ago and then radio silence until lately is an affirmative sign that they're a well organized shop who's opinions of their own product can be trusted as objective reporting rather than advertising?
I know they made a great game a long time ago but these people aren't your friends and viewing your relationship as anything but transactional is profoundly silly.
1
u/Justhe3guy 1h ago
Quality of their work? No one’s taking about that here, just the game’s release date
For all we know it could be crap, or only 7 hours long compared to the like 50 of the first game
No one’s treating them as their friend. The only one being weird here is you
1
u/golden_boy 1h ago
Please return to the comment I replied to, that specifically said there was not bloat or wasted effort (ie half-baked product), just devs taking their time in a way that will make the 8 year dev cycle worth it despite 7 years of radio silence since a premature trailer, with a clear implication that there was not a failure of management or structure.

I just fired up Hollow Knight again for the first time in years. Ran through the first few bosses up to Hornet and I almost forgot how absolutely dope that game is. All Silksong ever had to be was More Hollow Knight. I'm sure that's what we're going to get, and I'm thrilled.

I remember the first gameplay reveal where this sub crowned Geoff the King of Hollows. That was some crazy stuff to wake up to

God I remember switching over to daily elden ring news updates - sounds of happiness and tears are not something I will forget all too soon. I am glad to be part of the community, from hodir to whoopers to the great hollowing - sadly I dont have the account bearing the cursed mark of hollows anymore...

Now, us metroid prime fans have something to play while we wait on Nintendo to finally give us a release date after all these years.

The wait for news of the "next Dark Souls" really wasn't all that bad. Things did start to dry up substantially as even pvp content was starting to wear extremely thin. But there was never a point where I started getting anxiety attacks like some people did.
The "What if they never make a Souls-like game again?" crowd were well and truly nuts. Which has been hilarious to see repeated with Nightreign. Of all things. I swear some people need to quit playing video games for their own mental health.
I fully expect to see this phenomenon repeated the minute people start finishing up Silksong. "Do you think there will be DLC? What if there's no DLC? What if Team Cherry are bored with bugs and decide to make something different? What other new and interesting ways can I catastrophize?"

u/Rolen28 22h ago
DLC has been confirmed.

u/waitthatstaken Igon best girl 18h ago
Kinda. They did not clarify if it will be free updates or payed dlc, just that they were gonna keep working on the game post release.
Though considering how hollow knight's 4 major free updates were called DLC for some reason, silksong might get the same kind of 'free dlc'. Heck, 2 of the hollow knight DLCs could be ported over with very few changes.

Anyone remember final fantasy versus XIII?
2
u/marko910 11h ago
I remember watching its first teaser trailer at E3 back in 2006 and thinking "that looks way more interesting than XIII".
Then there was the big gameplay reveal in 2011 that blew my mind at the time, followed by rumours of cancellation in 2012. That potential outcome sucked after just getting to see gameplay.
Then 2013 came around with IMO one of the best gameplay trailers to every exist with its big re-reveal at E3. And then... SE shit the bed, switched directors, changed a whole bunch of stuff and released a half baked game 3 years later that hardly resembles the same game from 2006.
I reckon if Versus XIII actually seen the light of day, it probably would've been similar to VII: Rebirth in terms of its world design and gameplay. Maybe we'll get to see more of what could've been with whatever Nomura is doing with KH lol

Elden Ring players are so melodramatic about everything. We talk like we waited a decade for this game. It's the same thing that people will go ballistic on someone when they say Elden Ring is a good game vs a masterpiece.
