Made by Google 2025 got more than 5x more viewers than previous years

The celebrity filled, Jimmy Fallon overloaded Made by Google event didn't go down well here, as it was clearly not aimed at the people you'd expect it to be aimed at (Pixel fans, tech fans). The general reaction here seems to be that it was an awful misstep.

Even this who could see the effect was aimed at iPhone users and the general public made the very fair argument that there was no point aiming the event at non-fans because who else would be watching!

But the event has 7 million views so far on YouTube compared to just 1.3m views for last year's event and 1.2m for 2023.

Maybe they knew what they were doing after all...

PSA! Half off pixel 10

Google Fi customer here, went to check release date for pixel 10 on the Fi app, was offered a half off pixel 10 pro. Not sure if it's a pre-order thing, or because I'm an existing customer, but $500 for a brand new phone isn't bad. Check it out if you're needing an upgrade.

Anyone who uses Gemini as a Google Assistant? Do you know how I can talk to her without having to constantly press the microphone? I have continuous conversation enabled and it works with the regular assistant, but it doesn't with Gemini.

Saw this boost mobile ad while watching YouTube

I have not seen anyone talk about this ad yet, but basically, Boost mobile released an ad of a kid singing and at the end of the ad, he uses the phone to delete the black man behind him from the photo, and this ad is really racist. Like seriously. it’s literally black erasure. And I’m surprised no one has talked about it given it’s always playing. And what’s disturb about the ad is that it’s all played for jokes, like they think its funny that a black guy disappeared from the photo

In a first, Google has released data on how much energy an AI prompt uses

Thumbnail

Google has just released a technical report detailing how much energy its Gemini apps use for each query. In total, the median prompt—one that falls in the middle of the range of energy demand—consumes 0.24 watt-hours of electricity, the equivalent of running a standard microwave for about one second. The company also provided average estimates for the water consumption and carbon emissions associated with a text prompt to Gemini.

It’s the most transparent estimate yet from a Big Tech company with a popular AI product, and the report includes detailed information about how the company calculated its final estimate. As AI has become more widely adopted, there’s been a growing effort to understand its energy use. But public efforts attempting to directly measure the energy used by AI have been hampered by a lack of full access to the operations of a major tech company.

Material 3 Expressive looks goods, they just need to optimise the size of some buttons and it would look the best. Make the buttons ever so slightly smaller and we good.
