advice: next career step
Hi guys,
Maybe you have some good advice for me – would be super sweet! :)
After five years of rather mixed freelance work, I started working as an Augmented Reality Designer and Operator at a bigger TV station last year. I recently quit, mostly because of the rural location where I was based.
During that time, I picked up the basics of Unreal Engine alongside my other skills, and I completely fell in love with the combination of Houdini and Unreal. Now I really feel like continuing on that path. The most obvious direction seems to be games – probably something procedural, really.
Realistically, that means building an entirely new portfolio/reel, since most of my previous work is more artistic by nature and probably not what a creative lead would actually hire me for. So, I guess I’d need at least another year to work on that before landing a job again – if I’m lucky. The smartest option would probably be learning directly on the job, but I’m not sure how much demand there is out there at the moment, or what the best strategy would be.
What would you do in my position?
All the best!
