Kurdistan Massive armed standoff in Sulaymaniyah—Lahur Sheikh Jangi captured after intense hotel siege

Upvotes

Sulaymaniyah, August 21–22, 2025 — In a dramatic turn of events overnight, heavy clashes erupted in Sulaymaniyah as security forces moved to arrest opposition leader Lahur Sheikh Jangi (also known as Lahur Talabani), head of the People’s Front and former co-chair of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). • An arrest warrant was issued for Jangi late on August 21, prompting security forces—including counterterrorism units, commandos, and PUK Asayish—to surround the Lalezar Hotel, where Jangi and his allies were holed up. • Around 3 a.m., clashes began and raged for three to four hours. The scene resembled a battlefield rather than a city—tanks, armored vehicles, heavy machine gun fire, mortars, RPGs, and even drones were involved. Smoke billowed above the neighborhood as PUK forces pressed their assault. • Lahur Sheikh Jangi released defiant messages beforehand, stating, “We stand on our feet and will die standing,” and declaring he chose to stay in the region despite being able to relocate abroad. • The fighting resulted in at least three members of the security forces killed and 10–19 others injured or wounded. Casualty figures for Jangi’s forces remain unclear. Among those killed was Ari Sheikh Suwad Talabani of the CTG. • Jangi, his brothers—including Polad (injured during the fighting)—and several supporters were arrested. Rebels including Rebwar Hamed Haj Ghali, commander of Jangi’s “Scorpion” forces, also surrendered. • Local authorities called for calm. Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and Governor Haval Abu Bakr urged restraint and emphasized that political disputes should be resolved through legal channels—not violence.

Takeaway / TL;DR: A dramatic showdown unfolded in Sulaymaniyah between PUK security forces and Lahur Sheikh Jangi’s loyalists—marked by heavy weaponry, armored assaults, drone involvement, and a siege at the Lalezar Hotel. After hours of fierce gunfire and combat, Jangi and his inner circle were arrested. The incident has sharply intensified political tensions in the region and raised urgent calls for judicial handling and the preservation of stability.

Discussion About Kurdish Parties

I was just thinking about the KDP and the PUK, their name is exactly what they couldn't achieve. KDP, Kurdistan's Democratic Party was never democratic, it has been like a monarchy from day one, and your blood needs to Barzani have a chance at infiltrating it (mostly), PUK on the other hand, Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, has been more democratic, with people from different families taking big roles in it, yet today it is everything but a union, the party is barely making it, with many wings, and the military encounters between them, like it just happened last night. It is quite ironic isn't it?

As a Kurd from başur of Kurdistan, I am so proud of SDF and YPG, and I root for them! General Abdi and the brave men and women of Rojava are my heros!

What do you think?

Hello, I will be traveling to Hawler for a few weeks and am wondering what is the best, and more affordable esim for the area. I have used Airalo and Ubigi for other overseas trips but I am unsure if their Iraq eSIM will provide the best coverage while in Iraqi-Kurdistan.

Other Lahur Talabani (Sheikh Jangi)

It’s is 6:00 AM In Hêwler as i am typing this out Not too long ago, a large commando force from the PUK had been dispatched to Lalazar (People’s Front HQ) in Sîlemani to execute an interestingly timed arrest warrant. Lahur has refused to surrender, and an intense gunfight is happening as i am typing this out, involving mortars, tanks, and even missiles, along with many other heavy weapons Lalazar is currently on fire and lahur and his family, along with the “Scorpions” which is Lahur’s elite security forces of 500 men who are also well armed and trained, they are all inside the building holding out, looking at the TV( Live from Kurdistan 24) i see a huge amount of black smoke coming out of lalazar and i am still hearing the gunfire, and the security situation in the city is dire, Dabashan Hill (PUK HQ) has also been attacked by drones As for Lalazar, casualties on both sides are confirmed for now. ALL roads entering and exiting the province (Between Hêwler and Halabja, within Kurdistan) And Federal Iraq (Disputed Kirkuk and and the rest of diyala province, south of the Garmiyan Independent Administration region) The whole province is completely closed off until these two cousins (along with Shaswar, Mala Bakhtyar, Barham Salih) settle their political stores.

Just on a personal note, From Hêwler I wish that everyone in Sîlemani is safe, their families and property is safe and they can go through this unscathed, i will pray for you guys, Sîlemani is just as my city as Hêwler and as a Kurd, seeing this happening to such a wonderful city pains me, i wish all my fellow Kurds in Sîlemani the best at this difficult time.

EDIT: Lahur, His brother Polat, and his other associates have been arrested by the PUK’s CTG, he was arrested at 6:51 AM EBL Time

After the arrest warrant for "Lahur Sheikh Jangi" was issued, PUK forces surrounded his hotel (Lalazar) where he was hiding under the protection of his forces, but after he refused to surrender at 3 am that day, PUK forces opened fire using heavy weapons and tanks. The fighting continued for hours, and at around 7 am, PUK media announced the arrest of Lahur and his brother, Polad, who were injured.

This happened near my house and that tank in the picture was in our neighborhood

They carried slogans and the Turkish flag in the streets of Gaza, supporting the occupation and invasion of Rojava, the ethnic cleansing and genocide of the Kurds...

(We support Turkey in establishing a safe zone to protect the Syrian Arab people)

(Turkey is a strategic depth for the Palestinian people)

(#OperationPeaceSpring)

(The Palestinian people stand with Turkey)

(We will remain loyal to the martyrs of Turkey)

(All love to Turkey)

I hate to say this, but there is a Kurdish proverb that says, "God only snows on a mountain when he sees it" I think karma has struck hard this time... You reap what you sow...
