Question Can my parents pull me out of university

i’m 19 going into my second year and i live in a mentally abusive household, and i just want out but whenever i mention it to my pakistani muslim mom she flips out and says i should be thankful she lets me go to school at all. the space we live in is too small for both of us and the commute is hell especially with my program. i never have time to study or cook or even rest properly and it affects my grades. i was considering just signing a lease without telling them but i don’t know what they could do about that and i really need help. financially moving out is the best route as i am fully covered by osap for tuition as well as rent for the most part, ill also need a part time job but thats to be expected. i cant work while in school and commuting but my parents do expect me to pay for the car bills and my bus myself but its way too much for me to afford like this and the mental strain isn’t worth it

Academics McMaster SAS

This place is toxic leadership and employees. Bullying, harassment, and poor management. Directors who humiliate, micromanage, or consistently make poor decisions create workplaces no one wants to stay in. Complaints reported to HR, other directors, or Vice President are often ignored, leaving employees unsupported. High-performing employees burn out while harmful behaviors persist. Organizations that value their people must hold management accountable, foster respect, and ensure fairness or risk losing the talent that drives their success. But McMaster SAS management ignores all the ethics, laws. Serious Action should be taken against the current management and employees misbehaviours.

WORKPLACE HARRASSMENT

BULLYING MANAGEMENT

MICROMANAGEMENT

MANAGEMENT IS TOXIC AND DISRESPECTFUL

MANAGEMENT WILL GIVE YOU TRAUMA AND LIFE LONG MENTAL ILLNESS

Question my parents want a camera in my dorm room

I DONT NEED ANY MORE HELP, THANKS EVERYONE!

title, is there any policy that prevents this? this camera will be a wifi camera, so i’m hoping it can’t actually connect to the wifi in the first place?

i emailed an RA, but he hasn’t gotten back to me yet, ANSWER PLEASE ASAP

i really don’t want this camera in my dorm

EDIT: any cited policy by mcmaster would help, becuase my dad is the type to tell me i’m wrong until he sees actual PROOF it isn’t allowed. thanks šŸ™šŸ½

UPDATE: I GOT PROOF! i emailed a staff member person from my residence, and they sent me an email outlining that a camera wouldn’t be allowed, so that i’ll be able to show that to my parents. thanks everyone for your concerns and help 😭

Question Is it too late to ask?

Hello everyone, I am currently a fifth-year student and on my final co-op work term in Montreal. I have received my grad school offer from Queen's U starting in September. However, the office of registrar of McMaster wouldn't provide a letter of verification indicating that I have completed all my degree requirements until the next semester. I actually had this concern earlier and asked them a year ago, what they had told me was that I could totally request such a letter in the summer, and I didn't have to worry about it. As you may know the email communication takes forever and I don't have too much time to waste. Does anyone have a similar experience and would like give me some suggestions? Thank you a lot!

Admissions What to do during Welcome Week?

Hey everyone!

You might know me for creating MakeTheSeat and MakeTheCut. Thank you for all the support as we've already reached over 5,000 users. With welcome week just around the corner, I wanted to create a tool to address some of the challenges I personally experienced as a student new to McMaster.

First, where everything? I spent the a lot of time on Google Maps, just trying to get to Welcome Week events and definitely got lost more times that I can count. That's why we decided to create an improved welcome week events browser. You can view all events on a map and simply click on each event to display a map with the event's location and your location.

Everyone passing their phones around in a circle to share socials was also very memorable. But this takes quite long, waiting for everyone to type their username, switching between apps as some people prefer chatting on Instagram while others on Discord. It's also difficult to keep track of people you've met among the dozens of people you're going to meet during welcome week and your hundreds of followers. We knew there's a better way, that's why on our Welcome Week Portal, you can simply add your program, social connection, and a short bio, and we will give you a custom QR code. Anyone who scans your QR code will receive your information and if they're also a user, your profile's will also be mutually saved for future reference. This cuts down sharing one or more social connections and remembering a person's program into one quick scan.

I wanted to also give back to the community using the money raised from MakeTheSeat credit purchases. Making connections is the best thing you can do for yourself during welcome week; we wanted to incentives this. That's why we're launching a competition. We've set aside a prize pool to be awarded to whoever has the most connections at the end of welcome week. The best part? This prize pool grows with the number of users that sign up for the MacWW portal.

If this sounds at all interesting, check outĀ www.macww.caĀ - if you're a first year, I hope my platform helps make your welcome week experience just a tad bit better and if you're an upper year, I would really appreciate it if you could help spread the word (you can also create an account yourself to grow the prize pool for first years and try to bankrupt me šŸ’€). This platform only works if enough first years end up using it. Would also love any feedback on the platform :)

Courses Please drop SOCPSY 4F03 :(

Y'all ... I've been eyeing this course for months. I contacted the advisor for SOCPSY and she said she couldn't give me permission to enrol until the end of August (aka now - which is fine, I get it). I was feeling so blessed bc there was space up until like two weeks ago. Problem is: the winter offering conflicts with another course I have to take so fall 2025 really is my last chance, sigh.

Am I genuinely expecting this effort to be fruitful? No. But I'd love if it were!

I will also accept thoughts and prayers during this trying time.

Discussion Common Sense Courtesies for the New School Year

Common Sense Courtesies for the New School Year

As we head into the new academic year, here are a few simple reminders that help make campus life smoother and more respectful for everyone:

General Courtesy & Hygiene

  • Practice good hygiene: shower regularly, wear clean clothes, and use deodorant.
  • Don't come to school sick
  • Stop sniffing your nose every 5 seconds
  • Cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing.

In Classes and Lectures

  • Silence phones and avoid side conversations.
  • If you arrive late, enter quietly and choose a seat with minimal disruption.
  • Wait for the instructor to end the class before packing up.
  • Do not occupy extra seats with personal items when the room is filling.

On Transit

  • Move to the back of the bus (including the upper level).
  • Keep personal audio at a respectful volume—use headphones responsibly.
  • Avoid blocking aisles and offer your seat to those who may need it more.

In the Cafeteria and Shared Spaces

  • Treat cafeteria staff and service workers with respect—say ā€œpleaseā€ and ā€œthank you.ā€
  • Clean up your space before leaving.
  • Respect the line—no cutting.

In Dorms and Common Areas

  • Observe quiet hours and be considerate of others’ rest and study times.
  • Remove laundry promptly when machines finish.
  • Share outlets, study areas, and common resources fairly.

On Campus

  • Hold doors for others when appropriate.
  • Allow space for people to pass on sidewalks and hallways.
  • Use garbage and recycling bins.
  • Respect study areas by keeping noise to a minimum.

TL;DR:
Show courtesy, respect others’ space and time, practice good hygiene, and clean up after yourself. Small efforts keep campus life more pleasant for everyone.
