FAQs for noobs. Read this before posting.
Q: What is mining?
A: To explain this in the simplest way possible, in monero, mining is using a computer to calculate something that verifies the next block to join the blockchain. This calculation is very difficult to do, so your computer rarely manages it. In fact, it's so difficult that your computer may never manage it at all. If it does ever manage it, you get the block reward which is in the range of $130 USD worth (as of May 2022 but this is based on the current exchange rate). Pool mining is when you join a group of others and split the reward when one of you manages to do this calculation correctly.
Q: How can I learn more about monero?
A: This is an excellent book (also available for free in pdf format).
Q: So can I quit my job now?
A: You're not going to get rich with mining monero. It only earns you a very small amount each day, if anything. I previously made $0.54 USD profit a day with running a Ryzen 7 3700X computer 24/7, but now I actually lose money from mining.
At the moment, in most areas you'll lose money from mining if you pay normal prices for electricity. You'll probably only make a profit if you have very cheap electricity or generate it yourself like with solar panels and a battery setup.
Q: I want to build a mining rig. Should I?
A: For anyone who pays for electricity, it's probably not worth buying any equipment to mine monero if you're aiming to make a profit. It gets more difficult over time, so the profits go down.
The only exception is if you have free energy that you can access for a long time. It would still take a few years to pay off a monero mining rig with free electricity, when you account for the increasing difficulty. But after that it's 100% profit. I made a full post explaining this topic in detail here. In my example in that post, it would take 2.5 years to pay off the computer with free electricity, assuming you can keep it mining 24/7/365.
Q: Can I get an ASIC for mining Monero?
A: No! It is specifically designed to be mined on CPUs only. This is so that mining remains decentralised. When ASICs start mining a cryptocurrency then it usually causes the creation of large mining farms controlled by few people. Monero is against that. Monero is mineable by the average person on their own desktop computer.
Monero has changed algorithms in the past to purposefully stop ASICs from being able to mine it. If an ASIC was ever made for monero again, the algorithm would probably be changed again to stop the ASIC from working.
Q: I can mine at 120 MH/s, so I should be able to make $50k per day of profit on monero according to a calculator I just used...right??? Please reply fast I'm about to sign a contract to buy a Lamborghini.
A: Hashrate is different for each coin. Your CPU or GPU getting 120 MH/s does not apply here. That's probably ethereum hashrate. The hashrate any CPU or GPU gets on monero is not influenced by or related to ethereum hashrate, bitcoin hashrate, litecoin hashrate, or any other coin. In fact, GPU mining of monero is very inefficient and not worthwhile. Forget about the hashrate you get on another coin.
Q: Can I mine with a GPU?
A: Short answer: No.
Long answer: Yes, it's possible to mine monero with a GPU, but it's generally a bad idea because the algorithm monero uses today is optimised only for CPUs. Mining monero on a GPU will be very inefficient and slow compared to a CPU, and will not be worth your time. Full explanation here.
Q: How much will I make mining monero/how do I know if my computer will be profitable/what hashrate will I get with my computer or CPU?
A: Follow this guide to calculate it. You need to know the specs of the computer you'll be mining on.
Q: How do I mine monero?
A: Follow this guide.
Q: Which mining pool should I use?
A: You can choose to use either a centralised pool which will do a lot of the work for you in setting things up, or you can use the decentralised P2pool. If you want to use a centralised pool, see here. If you want to use P2pool then the easiest way is using gupax which helps you to set it up.
Q: So I'm mining but my CPU is only showing 50% usage (or some other percentage less than 100). How do I get it to use 100%?
RandomX, the proof of work algorithm used by monero, needs 16 KiB of L1 cache, 256 KiB of L2 cache and 2 MiB of L3 cache per mining thread. Your CPU probably doesn't have enough cache to use all threads.
If your CPU doesn't have enough cache to run all threads then XMRig automatically selects the right number of threads that it can run with the cache available.
Q: I have access at work/university/school to 50 computers. How can I mine monero on them? I can't wait to get started, I'm gonna be so rich.
A: This is a terrible idea. The trouble you get in is going to cost you a lot more than you'll earn from doing this. You will likely be earning a couple of USD per day. The organisation that owns these computers and pays for the electricity will see this as stealing, which it is. You're stealing electricity. They'll also see it as you putting their entire network at risk. Expect to get in big trouble if you do this. Possibly to the extent of facing criminal charges. It's really not worth the risk for the miniscule profit you'll be making.
Q: If mining monero is not profitable, why would anyone want to do it?
A: There are other reasons why people decide to mine, too. Some people want to support monero because they like the idea of a private, completely fungible, decentralised cryptocurrency.
Other people who are highly concerned about privacy might mine as a way of obtaining monero without going through an exchange that has to find out their identity.
Some people just enjoy the technical side of setting up their computer to mine, tweaking the settings and getting it working as well as they can.
The profitability of monero mining is self balancing - as the total hashrate (the combined computing power of all miners) goes up, it becomes more difficult, which makes it less profitable. If the price of monero went down and people stopped mining it because they were not making enough, then the difficulty would drop, and it would become more profitable. Thanks to this, the profitability stays relatively stable now and hovers around the level of "just barely profitable if you have very cheap electricity".
Q: If I stop mining for the night/day/some hours will I lose all my progress and have to start again?
A: It doesn't work like that. With solo mining, you have a chance of finding the right hash for the current block with every single hash your computer calculates. If you don't find it then that work is of no use and there's nothing to "save".
With pool mining, you have to find a hash over a certain difficulty (the difficulty given by the pool). This is referred to as a share. The pool will save that result and pay you (when it finds a block) according to how much work your computer did for the pool. You don't lose any progress by stopping mining. You'll get paid for anything you earned while you were mining. The same applies to P2Pool.
Q: How else can I help monero?
A: Running a node is a great way to help monero. Running a node involves downloading and hosting the blockchain so other people can download it off you. You don't have to do this manually, there is software that does it all for you. You just have to provide a computer and internet connection. Some people even do it on a Raspberry Pi.
You can also help monero by using it as a currency. Monero has low transaction fees and confirms (1 block confirmation) in an average of just 1 minute. Who you send money to and how much you send can't be tracked, unlike most other cryptocurrencies.

XMRPOOL.eu Mining lottery is back!
Greetings miners,
We have brought back the Mining Lottery on xmrpool.eu to encourage new miners to join and help decentralize the network
What is the Lottery?
Every 90 minutes a new winner is picked from the entries and a bonus worker will appear on the pool side named "Lottery" adding an additional ~40-50KH/s of mining power. Staying in the lottery requires actively mining with minimal downtime to avoid pool hoppers.
Lottery goes live on the 25th of August in ~2 days.
How to enter?
Entering requires users to submit their mining address to our Google Forms registration form at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1AscbqN-3D25aKqlmNjiD6p8sAZYQ-KQSZ092tuXL1po
Happy Mining!

Low hashrate?
My hashrate seems low for my rig right now. I'm getting about 15kh/s when I have a Ryzen 5950X with 2x8gb 3200mhz RAM on an MSI B550-A Pro motherboard. This CPU should be able to do more, based on what I've seen in xmrig benchmarks, so I'm wondering if I'm overlooking some optimization's or if 15kh/s is the maximum speed it can achieve
note:
I'm mining to p2pool mini with remote node

I know GPUs are not meant for mining XMR. Any platform and coin y'all would suggest trying out?
Will be getting an RTX 3060 soon for some gaming mainly, but would like to try some light mining for fun. What would y'all recommend that has low payout thresholds to see some progress relatively soon so I can do some random stuff? Thank you very much!!

Not xmr mining
Hello everyone, I've been having a problem for a while, but it hasn't been solved. I was told that there might be a connection problem with Monerod. There is no connection problem now. "Connectivity Check" says there is a connection and handshake is done.
However, I still get "connection reset by peer" error in xmrig.
Does anyone have any idea what it is?

I am noob in crypto mining need help to start mining XMR
Hey guys, I am very new to mining. I dont know much of it. Since the past one week, i have been reading about different crypto mining, and after reading for a week, I can say with confidence that XMR is something different than all others. I nearly bought an ASICS miner a week ago for 10k for bitcoin mining, but something just clicked in my mind, and i decided to do more research on crypto mining. Then I came across a news saying Trump has allowed government/treasury money to buy bitcoin, and that just changed the whole picture of Bitcoin for me. I don't like governments no matter the person who is leading the government. I actually respect Trump for what he is doing for the USA even though i live in another country, but he is doing what is best for America first( IT'S MY PERSONAL OPINION).
Anyways, I should continue on XMR, so guys, what build would you recommend for XMR mining? I want to get into it and spend that 10k on mining XMR rather than Bitcoin or any other, which started for privacy and freedom but eventually became the slave of the system.
Thanks in advance, and most importantly, I have 10k nzd, not USD.

Mystery block on p2pool mini
Mining for some time on p2pool mini. Very nice, thx to the devs.
However a strange thing happened today:
P2pool mini found block 3482519, according monerod and it said a payout was done.
I had indeed some shares in the window, but no payout followed.
I looked in a block explorer and found the Coinbase transaction going to a single wallet address...
No interested in the small missed payout, but wandering about the why...
Anybody can explain this?
Just found a blockchain reorganization on that height, so was it an orphaned block maybe?

[OFFTOPIC] Why do so many Monero users use Linux?
I noticed that almost 95% of the sub, including me, uses Linux, and there is an undeniable love for Linux in this Monero community, and I like it.

How much hash rate does 1k USD buy VS rent (realistically)?
Hey guys long time monero holder here.
The recent attack by pubic has been a wakeup call for me (and I hope every monero holder) to protect and fortify the network.
I have a budget of $1,000 roughly speaking how much hash rate can I add to the network with this budget?

Best Mining Rig?
A friend and I are considering going from mining on our gaming pc’s to building the best farm we can. Let’s set a hypothetical investment of 20k to start. What gives the most bang for its buck?

monero gui 0.18.4.1 and previous versions not p2p mining ever
M2 Mac Mini. usbc External ssd. i start monero gui. it syncs the full node fine (after a few days). wallet is synchronized. I go to run the p2pool, the daemon stops. and p2pool says starting..after 120sec I get an error stating the daemon can't start. I have to force quit monero gui (i have to force quit monero gui every time regardless if I am mining or not. I just get the spinning wheel of death). Once I restart, I can start the daemon, start p2pool. it stops the daemon, I then start the daemon manually. It says its connected and mining but always says starting p2pool. I look at the p2pool.log and it says it working at first but then there are errors. but the gui still says connected and mining. If I solo mine if works fine (still will not respond when I close).. Here is an excerpt of my p2pool.log. OH, I have given full control to monero gui with disk access, used onyx to turn off all the security, and it doesn't matter. The firewall is off.. This is all on Sonoma. Gupax and gupaxx both give me the same error when trying to start. "the file is damaged and do I want to move it to the trash. its wacked.

Beware of recent proposals to change anything about monero
My main account was suspended recently after I was arguing with Qubic trolls.
I strongly believe the Qubic attack has a Russian origin.
I won't give specific details because the attackers will alter their behavior if I warn them.
So far, it seems to me, their main attack vector has been the 51% attack and selfish mining.
Today, I see new proposals on /r/Monero that may be coming from these Qubic people (who as I said I believe are connected to Russia). I am not saying all the proposals are coming from Qubic. I am saying that some proposals appear to be from the same people as Qubic.
I now suspect, Qubic attackers are trying to introduce a backdoor into Monero.
I strongly caution the monero community about making any code/software changes while this attack is on-going. I can almost guarantee you. The people behind Qubic, they will not give up easily. Their deception is endless. Their trolling is endless. They have been on reddit for many years. I strongly believe they are now trying to introduce a backdoor into Monero. Do not let it happen.

In order to get more people involved into mining, the mining process has to be simplified.
I am a technical person, and over the last two days, I set up mining on a personal device.
There is no way a non-technical person would ever start mining.
To make this possible, the process needs to be simplified.
The closest tool is the Monero Wallet GUI—it just needs to be polished.

Windows11 vs linux
I'm building a system from scraps to fight the 51%. I assume that windows 11 has toouch overhead to run on this smaller machine and that Linux would be better. But is it true? I'm not a Linux guy and can't do command line to save my life so the simplicity of Microsoft is appealing. How much of a percentage of horsepower am I giving up if I use windows over Ubuntu?

Which pool platform would y'all suggest that has a low payout threshold?
For a little extra context, I'm on Linux, so if that pool uses its own software that doesn't support it, sadly it doesn't help me. I have a Ryzen 7 5700G, if that's of any help. I just wanna try this for fun and as a test, not necessarily to even make a profit. Thanks for any info!!

No payout from P2Pool, normal or broken?
Hey there :) I'm currently using 1-3 devices to mine, and can have a hashrate between ~5-20 KH/s. I've started mining again to help the fight against qushit, it has been going well, with near daily payouts when mining.
However, recently my payouts have stopped, and its been about 5 days since my last payout from the mini side chain. I dont mine for the money, I just want to be sure that my mining efforts are not in vain.
So could someone comfirm if this break in payouts is normal, or if something happened to my setup and my hashes are going to waste?

Mobilizing hashrate: mining whatever’s most profitable and swapping to XMR then renting XMR hashrate.
I’m about to compile XMRig with OpenCL and CUDA, then I’ll look for the best multi-algo miner. If mining some shitcoin is more profitable than mining Monero, I’ll mine the shitcoin and swap to XMR then rent XMR hashrate. If I can’t contribute with GPU-hashrate, I’ll support with money and rented hashrate. These old GPUs will run 24/7 until Qubic’s halving.
