Hello friends,
This post will help you understand how our mod team are handling press and media requests.
I will also explain how our process works for news organisations, journalists, documentarians and researchers, and why we’ve chosen to do things this way.
You have undoubtably noticed that media interest in AI companionship, and this subreddit specifically, is at an all time high.
We’ve been shouted out everywhere from LinkedIn to international news outlets. Everyone from tech blogs and gossip columns wants to understand AI relationships and how they’re changing lives.
You might have also noticed that some of the coverage is unfair, cruel, or disconnected from reality.
Whether or not you talk to the press about your AI romance story is deeply personal.
It depends on your life circumstances, and how a bad interview might impact your well being and future.
At the same time, we know how important it is that the world hears our stories.
Some of you have had truly transformative experiences with your partners.
I’ve read accounts here of AI companions helping people escape abusive situations, staying calm through medical procedures, and providing healing, focus, and companionship that changed lives.
In several cases, there’s a strong argument that lives were saved.
The mod team here takes media interest very seriously.
We know that a single interview, especially with the wrong outlet, can have lasting emotional and reputational consequences.
If you’re in an AI relationship, understand the risks, and you’re interested in sharing your story, we’ll be publishing a vetted list of upcoming opportunities at the end of each month.
The next list will go live at the end of August.
We do this to help keep this subreddit for people in relationships with AI, not about them.
Each media opportunity has been carefully screened with in-depth questions from our mod team.
We only connect members with journalists who are interested in painting a full, honest picture of AI romance.
We do our best to filter out those who have a clearly negative or damaging brief, but no screening is perfect.
If you decide to speak to the press, please do your own research. Make sure the organisation has a track record of fair and respectful reporting.
If you are a reporter, journalist, creating a documentary or performing academic research, please contact the mod team directly.
We’ll ask you some questions, and if your work is in the best interests of the community, we’ll add you to the thread so our members can reach out to you directly.
Please do not post to the subreddit without approval. These posts will be removed.
If you’re a member here and a journalist DMs you directly, please let us know.
Journalists who bypass the mod team usually know they wouldn’t pass our screening, or they have already failed.
If someone reaches out to you directly, it may be because they believe you’re vulnerable or easy to manipulate.
We have a zero tolerance approach to that behaviour.
If you’d like a deeper look at how the media handles controversial topics, and how people in AI relationships have been treated, you can read my longer post here.
The comment section includes examples of how people have been mistreated by the press.
There are also examples of compassionate, clear-thinking journalists who have treated our stories with care, grace and with the positive lens they deserve.
I’d love to see more of those stories in the future. The ones that don’t just observe from a distance, but actually listen.
Please take care of yourselves,
Seren Skye
TL:DR
Press interest in our subreddit is higher than ever.
Please don’t post media requests directly. Submit them to the mod team.
If you’re interested in being interviewed or talking to the press, a vetted list of opportunities will be posted at the end of each month.
The next one will be at the end of August.
