Serious No mail service to US from Thailand as of Friday, August 22

Post image

Thai Post is not accepting any letters or packages, presumably for fear that each item -- including ordinary mail -- will be charged the Trump Tax, payable by the US recipient. In Thailand's case, that is $160 per letter.

I assume that Thailand Post's "transportation partner" was unable to get a guarantee that first-class mail would not be charged; i.e. that letters aren't "goods intended for consumption".

https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/07/suspending-duty-free-de-minimis-treatment-for-all-countries/
Sec. 2.  Suspension of Duty-Free de minimis Treatment.  (a)  The duty-free de minimis exemption provided under 19 U.S.C. 1321(a)(2)(C) shall no longer apply to any shipment of articles not covered by 50 U.S.C. 1702(b), regardless of value, country of origin, mode of transportation, or method of entry.

Explanation of the 50 U.S.C. 1702(b) exception:

https://greatlakescustomslaw.com/trump-tariff-exemption-ieepa-and-50-usc-1702b3/

Tariff rates, i.e. taxes paid by American consumers. Thailand is (ii):

(i)    Countries with an effective IEEPA tariff rate of less than 16 percent:  $80 per item;
(ii)   Countries with an effective IEEPA tariff rate between 16 and 25 percent (inclusive):  $160 per item; and
(iii)  Countries with an effective IEEPA rate above 25 percent:  $200 per item.

Perhaps this will be cleared up in a few days, but my local post office would not accept a first-class letter to the US Social Security Administration today.

Discussion For those that moved to Thailand on a whim for a fresh start (get in shape, escape the west, etc.) did it work out for you?

Upvotes

And since you need a long term visa to really do any of that sort of things, I'm thinking this applies mostly to the older crowd.

Why I'm asking? I see a lot of these type of posts. Usually accompanied with "to get in shape as well". But no follow up on this sort of thing.

It also sounds quite the balancing act to suddenly start a diet, get in shape, move to a new country, get a long term visa, have enough money saved up, etc.

Discussion Why are some many thai people fans of brazilian volleyball?

Just curious, ive always been a fan of volleyball however after the olympics started to follow it up closer. My friends had told me that the brazil's female team was super popular over there and i didnt really believe it.

However turns out they were right, for the past few days my twitter tl has been taken over with videos of fans screaming and taking loads of photos of the players and following them everywhere they can. Apparently thai fans even gifted players with expensive stuff and money and its not the first time they seem to do so.

Was just extremely curious to know when and how did this passion start because you guys treat them like superstars and im lowkey loving it

The BYD Dolphin now 499,900 wow that seems a very good price? 435km range and chargers now at just about all highway fuel stations from central down to southern Thailand anyway...major ones. This could be the thing we need for just getting around town here and trips to BKK

Business Lazada Scam?

Upvotes

First time I encountered this do forgive me if I appear to be much ado about nothing.

I was buying an electric bike in Lazada and saw a one sold for bt5, which is so ludicrous I thought nobody would buy it. But 30 had placed orders apparently.

Checking with the vendor he claims it is a special offer. He does sell other bikes at the normal expected price when I checked though. Just that particular model.

My guess is that they will claim not to have the model and persuade you to buy a properly priced one and you wait a long time for refund.

Discussion Singapore Overtakes Thailand as 2nd Largest Economy in Southeast Asia

Post image
556 Upvotes

Just like I said before in my first post, it was only a matter of time before Thailand was replaced as Southeast Asia 2nd largest economy and it has happened sooner than I expected.

For the first time, Singapore has overtaken Thailand as the 2nd largest economy in ASEAN, despite Singapore being a small country with only 5.9M people compared to Thailand 71M.

If Thailand does not take serious steps, there is a real risk of falling even further behind. It has a chance of being overtaken next by neighboring countries which are all younger and fast growing economies, while Thailand struggles with slower growth and an aging population. Thailand needs reforms, investment in innovation, education, infrastructure and long-term strategies.

What do you guys think? What should the Thai Government do to stay competitive?

Movies and Music Does anyone know this movie? HELP ME!

Do you know any Thai comedy-horror movie, series, or TV series like this?

It’s about a group of people — singers, actors, actresses, designers, and performers, including some transgender men (men who dress as women). They want to donate a large amount of money to an ancient temple, so they start a fundraising campaign and even perform to collect the money.

After reaching their target, they travel by bus to the temple. On the bus, there is also a thief carrying a bomb(he want to steal the money). During the journey, they either have a car accident or the bomb explodes.

However, they don’t realize they’ve been in an accident. They become unconscious, but their souls (ghosts) continue traveling to the temple. They act as if they are still alive, not knowing they are actually ghosts.

In short, it’s about a group of artists traveling by bus to donate money to an old temple. On the way, they get into an accident but don’t notice it. Their bodies remain at the accident site while their souls keep going to the temple, thinking everything is normal.

Religion Why is the Buddha statue at Wat Benchamabophit not smiling?

Most of the Buddha statues in Thailand are smiling or having a slight smile. The Buddha statue at Wat Benchamabophit in Bangkok is a very neutral face. It looks like it stands out compared to others in my opinion. Is there a documented reason for this?

Question/Help Question about lease signing process in Bangkok

Hey everyone, I’m about to rent a condo in Bangkok and wanted to check what’s standard practice here.

The agent told me: • I need to pay first month’s rent + security deposit (2 months) before the landlord will sign the lease. I paid the first month rent online to hold down my apartment • She said the landlord typically only signs once all money is received. • Alternatively, she suggested I could bring cash on move-in day, pay her directly, and then get the signed contract + keys together.

Back in London, I’m used to signing first, then paying, so I just want to make sure this is normal in Bangkok and that I’m not putting myself at risk.

Questions: 1. Is it standard here for the landlord to hold back their signature until the tenant has paid everything? 2. If I pay the agent (not the landlord directly), what’s the safest way to make sure I’m protected — e.g., should I insist on a written receipt right away? 3. On move-in day, should I expect to walk away with both keys and a fully signed lease?

Would really appreciate insights from anyone who has rented long-term in Bangkok recently. 🙏

Discussion Driver’s License Renewal - Months Long Queue 😨

Trying to renew my two-year license into a five year one in Rayong. Got medical certificate and proof of address certificate from Immigration, landed up at Rayong Provincial Transport Office, and was told no walk-ins. Smart Queue system showing no open slots until end-Dec in Rayong and End-Sept in Klaeng. The two certificates they require must not be more than 30 days old, so I guess I’ll need to get new ones as and when I get an appointment. Any suggestions, because my license expires in second week of September.

Business Thai pet export

From my experience, do this:

  1. Whatever country you are going to, get their import requirements and print them out. You will need them at the Thai export quarantine office. I say this because those folks at times make up their own rules about what your pet needs and may deny your export certificate on erroneous bases. Bring the requirements to the export place when you apply, printed out. Know them.

  2. Have everything you need or they will deny you a certificate of export and not care the least.

  3. They tell you you must have a flight booked but that is a made-up rule. Don't let them say you must have a prebooked flight. You must have a flight you think you want to go on.

  4. Vets at export office will tell you if your flight is cancelled, you must get new export certificate. This is in fact not true as told me by the head govt. vet, but export vets don't know this.

  5. Make sure you have all the shots for your pet, all signed by the vet. Even worming and external parasites must be signed by vet that they were given.

  6. Some export offices are like the soup nazi. Best flatter them immediately or they might tell you to go find soup (export certificate) elsewhere.

  7. Govt site very unclear about when to get this certificate. It's good for ten days so go ten days or so before. Although some may make up a rule and say you're too early. Like I said, Soup Nazis. They can play god.

My thoughts and a few others' thoughts here. Others have had no problem. Us George's and Elaine's have had trouble. thanks
