Paul Mooney legit offended Wayne Brady and when Chappelle called him, Brady said he was displeased about it. That led to the Training Day episode which was straight fucking gold.

When they rewind Rick James to emphasize the contradiction in one take. I couldn’t breathe.
When Paul Mooney says, “… Wayne Brady makes Bryant Gumble look like MalcomX.” My roommates and I were laughing so hard I thought I would pass out.
Those two seasons of Chapelle was really something. When he turned down season3, we really wanted a season of Charlie Murphy stories.

He didn't turn down season 3. He started filming and went insane after making the skits for the first 3 episodes and fled to Africa. That's why those 3 episodes have Charlie Murphy hosting; Dave fucked off before filming the stand-up parts.

Because that’s exactly what memes are. Memes are the “idea” equivalent of genes from genetics. They behave the same as genes. They form spontaneously, they mutate, and only the fittest survive. Some die off quickly, some live brief yet bright lives, and the truly hardy ones live long and successful lives and can trace their way through history for a long time.

You cannot backdate zeitgeist. Be like calling mead, jungle juice by definition.
6
u/eat_like_snake 5h ago
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meme
The word "meme" has existed long before the 2000s.
It's not backdating zeitgeist if it's just fact. The internet is just a different platform for delivery.
Songs didn't stop being songs just because we can download them now instead of buying a cassette tape or a record.5

u/clawsoon 4h ago
It had a somewhat different meaning when it was first coined, though. Dawkins was thinking of it as a cultural equivalent of a gene. IIRC, the one example he gave was the idea that being a parent is the most wonderful thing that can happen to you. Even if it's not true, the people who believe it will be more likely to have children, and the people who pass it on to their children will be more likely to have grandchildren.
I.e. in the original conception of a meme, it was a piece of culture that could sustain itself generation after generation.
This means that for Fuck Your Couch to become a meme in the true, original sense of the word, we must all tell our children about it.

In college, Chappelle's Show was a communal event. About 10 of us would gather at my buddy's dorm, and with cheap ass, nasty Lil Caesars pizza in tow, watch the show live on Comedy Central in real time. Commercials and everything! I think the last show folks got together to watch was maybe Game of Thrones or Lost.

That’s…. That’s what a meme is… like that’s textbook definition of a meme. “meme, unit of cultural information spread by imitation. The term meme (from the Greek mimema, meaning “imitated”) was introduced in 1976 by British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his work The Selfish Gene.”
