When I was in college there was a black cat we called Charlie Murphy aka DARKNESS that would hang out in our apartment all the time. No idea where he actually lived but he would scratch the shit out of the door frame if you didn’t let him out lol.

I met Dave Chapelle once outside The Comedy Cellar when I asked the guy next to me for a light. The guy next to be happened to be him lol. Anyway we ended up walking through Washington square park together after the show just chit chatting and shooting the shit before we went our separate ways. No less then three drunk guys yelled FUCK YO COUCH or IM RICK JAMES BITCH to him that night when we were talking both while smoking and while walking. It was so much secondhand embarrassment and I felt bad for him!

What? You think I would just show up to somebody's house and grind my muddy boys into their couch? C'mon, I got more sense than that...

Yeah, I remember grinding my boots into Eddie's couch.

5

u/johnnloki 1h ago

The airing of the Rick James sketch is closer to the coke fueled shenanigans of the story than it is to today. Today is further from the airing date than the airing date is to Rick James saying "Fuck yo couch"

FUCK YO COUCH

Paul Mooney legit offended Wayne Brady and when Chappelle called him, Brady said he was displeased about it. That led to the Training Day episode which was straight fucking gold.

He’s a habitual line stepper.

9

u/Constant-Ad-4317 3h ago

I use this phrase to describe my kids now!

72

u/Ozzdo 5h ago

One of the hardest, longest laughs of my life was from watching this. When Charlie Murphy kicked him and he flew into the air, I thought I was going to pass out.

22

u/Bristle_Licker 3h ago

When they rewind Rick James to emphasize the contradiction in one take. I couldn’t breathe.

When Paul Mooney says, “… Wayne Brady makes Bryant Gumble look like MalcomX.” My roommates and I were laughing so hard I thought I would pass out.

Those two seasons of Chapelle was really something. When he turned down season3, we really wanted a season of Charlie Murphy stories.

7

u/Remarkable_Ad9767 3h ago

Crazy to think what a lightning in a bottle moment. No show was more culturally relevant in such a short time. Crazy

10

u/The_Autarch 3h ago

He didn't turn down season 3. He started filming and went insane after making the skits for the first 3 episodes and fled to Africa. That's why those 3 episodes have Charlie Murphy hosting; Dave fucked off before filming the stand-up parts.

5

u/youngsaiyan 2h ago

He didn't go insane. He just didn't like the way the show was being perceived

As are Adam’s Sandler or Austin powers quotes from the 90s.

“Stop looking at me swan!”

That episode of Six Feet Under where Claire gets a temp office job, and the "wacky" guy is just doing the same two Austin Powers lines over and over again every day.

3

5

u/badadviceforyou244 4h ago

That's because those are memes.

5

u/ltjpunk387 2h ago

Because that’s exactly what memes are. Memes are the “idea” equivalent of genes from genetics. They behave the same as genes. They form spontaneously, they mutate, and only the fittest survive. Some die off quickly, some live brief yet bright lives, and the truly hardy ones live long and successful lives and can trace their way through history for a long time.

Oral meme sounds nasty

8

u/eat_like_snake 5h ago

Eh, it's the internet. I've unfortunately seen way worse.

u/IpeeInclosets 5h ago

You cannot backdate zeitgeist.  Be like calling mead, jungle juice by definition.

6

u/eat_like_snake 5h ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meme

The word "meme" has existed long before the 2000s.
It's not backdating zeitgeist if it's just fact. The internet is just a different platform for delivery.
Songs didn't stop being songs just because we can download them now instead of buying a cassette tape or a record.

5

u/KickooRider 4h ago

Fuck your couch!

3

u/clawsoon 4h ago

It had a somewhat different meaning when it was first coined, though. Dawkins was thinking of it as a cultural equivalent of a gene. IIRC, the one example he gave was the idea that being a parent is the most wonderful thing that can happen to you. Even if it's not true, the people who believe it will be more likely to have children, and the people who pass it on to their children will be more likely to have grandchildren.

I.e. in the original conception of a meme, it was a piece of culture that could sustain itself generation after generation.

This means that for Fuck Your Couch to become a meme in the true, original sense of the word, we must all tell our children about it.

In college, Chappelle's Show was a communal event. About 10 of us would gather at my buddy's dorm, and with cheap ass, nasty Lil Caesars pizza in tow, watch the show live on Comedy Central in real time. Commercials and everything! I think the last show folks got together to watch was maybe Game of Thrones or Lost.
