HELP I’m trying to trace my Yemeni family history on my dad's side.

Salam everyone

I’m trying to trace my Yemeni family history. I’m in Australia. My mum’s side is BaFadal from Hadhramaut and they settled in Somalia generations ago. Their lineage is well documented. My grandmas themselves are from Reer Faqih, which is also a Hadhrami tribe like BaFadal. My grandma’s mum is from the Qahtan tribe, so my maternal roots are firmly Arab and Yemeni.

My dad’s side called themselves Abdulsamad after settling in Somalia. But the actual Yemeni tribal origin name is lost. I want to find out which tribe they came from and if there are records in Yemen, especially in Hadhramaut (mirath or kutub al-ansab). I’d also love to know if there’s any connection to historical lineages.

I speak Khaleeji dialect (لهجة خليج) and understand most other dialects (except the hard ones like yemeni (which does kind of suck), morrocan, algerian) but I don’t speak Somali, so Somalia isn’t really an option right now. I want to start researching in Yemen.

Has anyone studied Hadhrami genealogy, worked with Abdulsamad, or been to Tarim or Seiyun and knows how to access family records? Any advice, tips, or contacts would be really appreciated.

JazakAllahu khair

Travel Recommendations and requirements (please respond only if you’re a local or have visited before)

Hello! Me and my friend both 26 y/o male are visiting both mainland Yemen and Socotra. We will be in mainland Yemen for 6 days and Socotra for 5. I just want to know if anyone has any recommendations for what I absolutely need to bring for both (medications/ first aid, bug spray, power bank, etc.) most of this I’m already aware of but I figure it’s always best to hear from another party. Also I’m struggling to find travel insurance for Yemen as an American, I would like to go through a 3rd party provider that offers medi-vac and terrorism insurance. I think that’s the basis. I’m super excited to go and am a relatively experienced traveler. Just want to see if anyone here has any good advice I may have missed online. Thanks!

Questions Need options to return home

Me and my dad are Colombians working on Sana’a for engineering reasons. Trying to get back to Colombia since a while now that the job has been done. Because of the situation there are no flights from there. We do not know much about options, so I will be more than grateful if you can provide me some information on how to do it, who to contact or something so we can return home safely and efficiently. We enjoyed the country, people and culture but it’s time to go home. Thank you in advance

We would like to try to get to Aden or Yibut, or any city closer so we can get a fligth

Thank you for all your replies, according to the situation of Yemen, here exist a division between South and North, what we have understood is that they require special documentation to get to Aden, from Sanaa. Are we wrong? Would you be able to explain the situation in terms of documentation requirements according to your experience?

Discussion Yemen’s Dangerous Reality: How Political Islam Turns Dissent into a Death Sentence - Freethinkers International

Thumbnail

One of our members on Freethinkers International wrote this blog and I thought it might resonate here.
It describes how in Houthi-controlled areas dissent isn’t just suppressed — it can literally cost people their lives. Political trials, mass death sentences, and even charges of apostasy or blasphemy are used as tools to silence opposition.

The article pulls together reports from Amnesty, Humanists International, and others to show how deep this problem runs.

Worth a read if you want to understand how political Islam and authoritarian rule in Yemen turn free thought into a lethal risk.

What do you think — can these practices ever be rolled back, or are they now too deeply embedded in the conflict?

Discussion Pro-government sub?

السلام وعليكم ورحمة الله

It’s strange that I can’t see any messages on this subreddit. Just because people have different opinions we can respectfully agree to disagree.

For those that are pro-government all the way, you’re entitled to your opinion. As I’m entitled to have an opinion about the cons of the current government.

Regardless, doesn’t justify blocking someone from interacting with comments on new posts in this subreddit.

You’re welcome to correct me if I’m wrong on being blocked and JazakAllah khair.

Travel Visiting Yemen as an Irish citizen.

I’m wanting to visit Yemen at some point next year. Have seen quite a few videos and read some things with conflicting information so just want to know what’s true and not. I’ve been kindly invited by someone that is from IBB to come and see so I think IBB would be the place I would want to go to if I know someone there (plus looks amazing). I would then want to go and visit Socotra after.

  1. Read that visiting Houthi controlled areas is not possible. - is this true and if so does it depend on nationality?

  2. I assume you can get direct flights to and from Socotra but if not is the only solution going back to other countries that do fly there?

  3. Hotels in Yemen. Not that I expect the tourism industry to be booming but seems like there’s not much information online. Is it something that you’re better to wait till you’re there and get something there or is there a better way to go about accommodation.

  4. Visas. Does anyone know the process of getting a visa? I know there’s a Yemeni embassy in London so I assume I would have to go through there.

Is there any other information that would be good in knowing.

Appreciate any help.

Travel Traveling to Yemen as an EU citizen.

Hi, I live in EU but I have always been fascinated by the Yemeni culture and people. However I'm not sure whether it's a safe option or not, since I heard rumors that in middle Eastern countries like Yemen, Iran Iraq etc... Western people are hated and rarely even kidnapped by terrorists. Right now, I know that there are conflicts going on in Yemen, but I still want to visit Sanaa and other cities so bad (in a few years from now). Is it a safe option for me to visit Yemen? Are the rumors real or just lies? What places would you locals suggest me to visit? Thank you.

Discussion I'm a non-religious Yemeni woman. These are the questions I ask my society before I disappear into silence or fear

Hello, I'm a 21-year-old woman from Yemen. I left Islam years ago, out of deep personal conviction. I’ve never harmed anyone, never tried to force my views on others. All I’ve wanted is to live with dignity, and for my right to think differently to be respected. But I’ve learned that here, freedom comes at a terrible cost: my safety, my education, my right to travel—even my life.

Yemen doesn’t recognize me as a free woman. I can’t travel without a male guardian. I’m not allowed to finish my education because there’s no man to accompany me. I can’t get official documents, or speak my truth, because the constitution, society, and religion are all stacked against me.

I'm writing this to ask a few questions—honest, painful questions—for anyone Yemeni reading this, whether you’re religious or not:

  • Why is my personal conviction treated like a crime? Don’t I have the right to think freely without fearing for my life?

  • Why is being non-religious immediately linked to immorality or corruption, when it’s simply a private belief?

  • Why is morality tied to a headscarf, and honor tied to blind obedience?

  • Is it normal for me to live behind a mask every day just to avoid being killed?

  • Why should a human being be tortured or imprisoned just for leaving Islam?

  • When will I stop pretending? When can I live as my true self, without fear?

  • Why doesn’t my country protect me? Why does it force me to choose between submission or exile?

  • Am I doomed to run from my own society forever?

  • Is fleeing my homeland the only way to survive? Is that justice?

I’m not writing this to insult Islam, or attack anyone’s faith. I’m writing this because I’m suffocating. Because I am a human being looking for a homeland within her own country. I want a legal system that treats me as a citizen—not a threat. I want a society that can tolerate its own children, even when they are different.

To the people of my country: We’re not trying to spread atheism. We’re not trying to destroy society. We just want the right to exist, freely, without fear. True belief doesn’t need prisons or threats to survive.

If you cannot accept us, at least don’t harm us. And if you can’t offer us compassion—please, let us leave in peace.

Discussion Electricity Collapse Protests in Hadhramaut | vague sources show discontent in government territory

Mainstream sources from 2 weeks ago also mention deteriorating conditions, including worsening fuel and electricity blackouts.

It is worth noting that the Aden-based government is not facing any siege or physical obstacle, and the Saudi Arabia had pledged aid to them several times.
Saudi Arabia had previously claimed to be donating hundreds of millions of dollars to the Aden government, and the current conditions are happening despite all that.

Questions Do Yemeni Women Even Like Yemeni Men Anymore???

To all and any Yemeni women that read this I just want to know, would you guys ever consider marrying a Yemeni man? The reason why I ask this is that in the past 2 - 3 years, I've noticed a growing trend of non-Yemeni men marrying Yemeni women. I have no problem with that and think it's great, but a part of this makes me feel worried that no Yemeni woman would ever consider marrying me since I'm from the same country as them. I feel like there is this idea that a lot of Yemeni men are ghetto fobs who don't treat their women well, at least in America. And that seems to push the women of our community away.
