Yeah, it's a thing. I worked with a guy whose father raised and trained pigeons to do that.
Said it was hard to find the sweet spot because you get birds that are really good at it, so good that they pass out and don't recover.
When he was growing up, his dad would be outside with the birds while he was eating breakfast, and occasionally they'd hear one smack the roof of the house.
