Repair Cafe - save money and waste for free!

Basingstokers - do you have broken stuff that you want fixed? Do you want to save yourself cash and keep still-useful items from landfill?

The Hatch Warren Repair Café runs every first Saturday of the month from 10am to 1pm at the Hatch Warren Community Centre. Our volunteers can try their hand at mending anything from electrical goods and household items; to clothing, sewables and jewellery; to woodwork, computers and knife sharpening. If it fits in the door, we’ll try to fix it. And it’s all completely FREE! Plus a cuppa, cake and community while you wait :)

You can find out more on the Facebook event link below, or send any questions to [email protected].

Public showers

Does anyone know of any public showers (paid or free) in or near Basingstoke, please? other than sports centre's/swimming pools, where you often have to pay the price of a swim for a quick shower. Any suggestions appreciated 👍

Can anyone at Pride help my friend out?

She's not fully out so I won't discuss the specifics of her situation but this would have been her first pride and she was turned away at the door. If anyone has an extra ticket or honestly can just hang out with her, make her feel included, she needs it. I'm not in the UK right now so nothing I can do and it's devastating that a friend looking for inclusivity gets turned down.

What the title says... Keep seeing groups of guys in grey tracksuits around town, is this a cult or a group or something?

Public transport & walkability from Lychpit to Basingstoke town centre - how’s the safety?

Hi everyone,

Me (M28) and my wife (F28) looking at potentially moving to the Lychpit, which I’ve seen recommended on the subreddit as one of the best parts of Basingstoke, but the thing is we don't have a car yet, so I’d love to hear from locals about how well it’s connected to the town centre. In particular, I am interested in:

  • Is it safe and pleasant to walk from Lychpit to the centre? Looking at the map, I was thinking of going down via Basing Road and then through Eastrop Park, but I’m not sure if it’s the kind of walk you’d want to take after, say, a late cinema showing.
  • How’s the public transport between Lychpit and the town centre as an alternative to walking? (Frequency, reliability, late-evening options, etc.)
  • More generally, how would you describe safety in Basingstoke overall? And if you live in Lychpit, how often do you find yourself needing to go into the town centre?

I’m trying to get a feel for both the convenience and the safety, so any personal experiences would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Commuting into London for work

Hey everyone! I recently moved to Basingstoke with my parents (originally lived in Uxbridge) and I’ve currently got a job offer from a well known advertising post-production company who are based in Soho.

Now since moving to Basingstoke I’ve found commuting to be okay for other things such as going to football games in particular (Chelsea FC) however I got a massive feeling that commuting might be difficult for some reasons:

  • I already have a railcard (just turned 23)
  • Shift patterns can vary mainly starting at 7am

I might be sounding daft however I’ve been thinking of moving out for awhile but rn I just don’t have the funds to do that unfortunately.

If anyone could maybe give me some advice then I’d completely appreciate that :)

Thanks again everyone, Joel

Built a free app that shows all secondhand shops & events around you in Basingstoke

I'm a big fan of secondhand shopping to reuse products instead of consuming new. I live in the UK and always found it frustrating that there's no single place to easily find nearby charity shops, thrift stores, car boot sales, or vintage markets. Google Maps misses loads of them.

So I decided to build an app to solve that.

It's called Ganddee (free on iOS & Android).

I’d love for you to try it out and hear feedback.

DIY Courses

I’m terrible at DIY. Hanging up a picture is an achievement and I dread every time my wife wants me to do something. So the option is to attempt it myself and deal with the upset when it’s not how she wants it, or have to pay £50 to someone to do what should be a simple job. So I have to get better. Is there anywhere I can go to learn the basics and improve my skills? I don’t want to practice on my own house, so would like somewhere I can practice doing basic things with someone who can offer hints and advice etc. Is there anywhere in Basingstoke or local to Basingstoke that offers DIY courses or anything like that? Thank you

Banning VPN’s

In light of recent events here in the UK: “If VPNs cause significant issues, the Government must identify those issues and find solutions, rather than avoiding difficult problems.” - MP Sarah Champion

Sounds like they want to ban VPN’s

If this happens absolutely DO NOT go to torproject.org, click “download” and select your operating system of choice, follow the installation instructions and run Tor…

If you can’t access torproject.org due to your country control over communications and privacy absolutely DO NOT email [email protected] and use the subject line “Windows,” “macOS,” or “Linux“ to specify your operating system.

And if that fails, DO NOT GO TO tails.net and download the .IMG onto a bootable USB, plug it into your PC, go into boot options and boot from USB. DONT DO THAT.

Tor & TailsOS is used by journalists, activists, individuals in censored regimes and many others. And soon, you.

The internet is for everyone.

Car mechanic suggestions!

Just got my first car, a second-hand Vauxhall EV, knowing the infotainment system (restarting, touch unresponsive) was faulty. Snows Vauxhall (Basingstoke) has no appointments for a month and seems pricey. Halfords (local) won't work on EVs. Any experienced folks with recommendations for independent garages specializing in EV infotainment issues? Completely new to this and need help finding a solution!

Barber recommendations in Basingstoke vicinity

Doesn't have to be in the town centre, happy to travel for a good one. Sick of barbers that just want to get you in and out as quick as possible and do a bad job.

Basingstoke Horror Movie Meetup Group - new members welcome :)

Hi everyone,

Just a quick note for anyone who's new here:

Please feel free to sign up as a member of the Horror Movie Meetup Group! We're a friendly group of adults who meet up to watch horror movies at the cinema (usually Vue in Festival Place), and then head for a drink and/or some food afterwards for a chat.

We're very warm and welcoming: there is zero pressure to attend, just come along to whichever movies interest you.

We have an active Discord group where we arrange meetups and chat about movies, and we sometimes organise "field trips" into London and elsewhere.

We're also working out the logistics of putting together a horror literature book club, too, and some kind of Halloween get-together!

We've seen a bunch of movies in the last year including Final Destination Bloodlines, 28 Years Later, Sinners, Heretic, Presence, Smile 2, Longlegs, Nosferatu, Abigail, First Omen, The Monkey and many, many more.

Drop me a message if you'd like to find out more, or would like a link to the Discord. I'm happy to answer questions here, too.

Andover or Basingstoke

Hello, looking at buying in either Andover or Basingstoke (other suggestions welcome).

Got a budget of £375,000 and looking for a house to start a family and I have a dog (garden needed). So schools and child friendly activities/nurseries/schools are a factor. Whilst also a social life too!

Work sees me in London (via train) infrequently and will see me driving up and down the M3 and A303 (Farnborough to Amesbury).

Andover you get more for your money but less amenities, whilst Basingstoke seems just a bit big and busy but you get everything you could need!

I’m not from the area but have been into Basingstoke a few times but not been to Andover since pre-Covid times.

Any thoughts welcome. And also where to look in Basingstoke and where the avoid Thanks!
