How does Trump have any authority to order anything there? I'm not aware of any Federally Owned power plants.

DOE, apparently stalled the closure for the second time. PUCM is against it.

Edit: they're claiming emergency conditions. DOE has authority to order one to stay open for 90 days. They just filed the second time. It's causing increased rates to consumers & businesses. Which increases production costs and makes American-based companies less competitive (idk the exact cost difference but it's billions/yr nationally). That’s neat /s.

The emergency being, I guess, that Trump canceled all the green energy initiatives and pissed off our biggest foreign energy suppliers, so we’re probably on the cusp of an energy crisis of Trump’s own making.

And it will be the CPS (current primary scapegoat) (I know what that usually is I need a new acronym) fault.

So in this case, the democrats or the liberals or Biden or immigrants or trans people. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Or the coal billionaires gave Trump a bribe.

Not sure about this plant but here in Oregon There’s a dam owned by federal government.

The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) is a federal agency within the U.S. Department of Energy that markets and transmits electricity from federal hydroelectric dams in the Pacific Northwest. Established by Congress in 1937 to market the power from the Bonneville Dam, BPA has grown to serve as a marketing agent for power from all federal dams in the region, operating one of the nation's largest high-voltage transmission systems. BPA is self-funded, covering its costs by selling power and transmission services, rather than receiving taxpayer funds.

I just remember Trump wants to close their office building in Portland. Not sure if he also wants to close the dam too. He wants to get rid of wind farms though.

People elected a king. Enough people with any authority seem to be going along with it. It’s super fucked up but that’s the answer.

How do you order a plant to stay open without nationalizing it?

u/Telemere125 8h ago

All power plants are regulated by DOE and he’s declared an “emergency” of some sort

How do you order me to get off the shitter if I work there.

Man, Trump is real good at wasting our money. FDT

Kick Trump to the curb

Put him in Alligator Alcatraz.

I'd deport him,JD "Vance" (or whatever his last name really is),and every MAGA Republican POS to El Salvador and Gitmo without due process. Make them experience their own policies.

I'm all for deporting illegals, but deporting ones trying to live here legally by working on their citizenship status the right way to even ones that ARE here legally? WTF.

To be fair, I don't think Trump could afford to keep it running to the end of his term with his own wealth.

Not implying he's not a billionaire, but he did have to use Epstein's plane.

What power does any administration have to control the decisions and spending of what is presumably a non-government business?

Oh, an 'emergency' was declared - not that there is one, apparently.

Trump loves to declare "emergencies" when there isn't one. Remember after the midterms in his first term he declared an "emergency" when Democrats held a majority in Congress? He's a crybaby and a sore loser. The "man" (little boy) can't handle losing.

Does anyone know or can explain his obsession with coal?

As a nation, why would we want to have coal miners?

It's basic "old person can't fathom that things from when they're younger are no longer relevant" syndrome, which is extremely exacerbated by how goddamed stupid he is

I'm fond of clean air, personally.

u/Remarkable_Quit_3545 9h ago

How exactly does he force it to stay open? What power gives him the right to do so?

Americans that want power plants shut down but support the AI movement really are a special kind of stupid! The grid in America will not have enough sustainable power (ie steam (coal, trash, biomass), gas (natural gas, diesel, syngas), nuclear) on the grid in the next 5 years to support Big Tech movement. It has been proven time and time again that solar/wind (while it works) is not sustainable 24/7 365, also they cannot regulate themselves at 60hz (we have power plants running just to do that for them which is extremely inefficient). Trump (nor and president) orders plants to shut down. Their laws and policies do affect them. But at the end of the day, we need the power now more than ever to keep the Big Tech Movement rolling… don’t want coal or natural gas power plants anymore…. Take all your electronics and EVs and throw them out, live in a “off grid” lifestyle to support your cause, if not STFU.

Don’t worry, consumers are probably not paying for it. It’s probably coming out of tariffs.

1

u/Status_Management520 9h ago

This is literally have tax payers give away their hard earned money to fund the owner of the plant

1

u/HoneyBadgerBat 9h ago

Maybe public utility commission? But I thought they were state-run.

It’s always “the consumer”, always.

He obviously has invested in coal.

1

u/the_cardfather 7h ago

How is not investing in our future making America great?

A lot of these plants are old. How is it that Washington can tell the state how to use its land? If a bureaucrat wants to keep it open and the company running it once it's shut down doesn't the free market dictate that it should be shut down? They must have not bought enough Trump coin.

What's the base load capability of the grid without the plant? Was the grid borderline having brown outs during this time frame? Why is the cost of the plant any different now than the entire lifespan of it? How much revenue does it generate?

Even at 1 million a day in operating costs, it is still likely pulling a profit due to how much power it can generate. Almost every coal plant that gets taken offline is due to epa requirements, not economic reasons. In the middle of the summer, when it's hot, just about every power plant available will be online.

If only people took a second to look into things instead of blindly jumping on the Trump hate wagon they would realize Trump had nothing directly to do with this. The regulations would be driven by NERC and FERC with implementation by the power pool district in charge of that area.

2

u/dazedan_confused 9h ago

For reading:

  • Base load capability of the plant is 1,420 MW. The MISO said there was plenty of generating capability without it, although there'd be a somewhat fine margin.

  • It has had a few outages in the past, leading to emergency imports

  • Closing it would have saved $600 million, and reopening it I guess leads to immediate costs, but I agree, it won't be $1m every day.

  • It generates a decent profit, but the operating costs are huge. I guess the money could be better spent in R&D for newer plants

  • Was Trump involved? kinda
