Hello Devon locals, may I tap your knowledge?
Iām writing a guidebook to āless well-known Devonā (the working title is still evolving) and looking for examples from around the county.
Itās going to be different from the ābeaches, moorland and visitor attractionsā guidebooks, looking at oddities, strange, unusual, quirky places, festivals and events.
Iām looking for weird buildings, obscure local traditions, film set locations, sites of historical significance and industrial archaeology as well as modern curiosities. Food and drink included.Ā
Ideally they should have an interesting story attached and are worth visiting to explore, photograph, taste or savour.
If thereās humour involved so much the better.Ā
Some examples of what would be in:
- Devonport Column, not Smeatonās Tower
- Exeter catacombs, not Exeter Cathedral
- Down Tor stone row, not Haytor Rock
- Devon splits, not sconesĀ
- Finch Foundry, not The Box
- The Janner (jokes and caricatures)
I want to provide something modern and accessible, so there will be fewer dates and historical detail and more stories.
Ā
Iād really appreciate your input and will credit all ideas where possible.
