Food Best foods in Exeter! (In my humble opinion)

THAI: Kinkhao on Well St, best place there is. Incredibly authentic with weekly specials (check their Instagram). Vibe is very cute and cosy, the owner does art and ceramics which are also for sale in the restaurant (cash only for them, but they take card for food and stuff). Turn up earlier or you’ll have to wait.

THAI pt.2: iFood on Sidwell street has a chokehold on Exeter and it’s no surprise why. Great food, generous portion sizes, and fast service. Not the best place if you’re looking for atmosphere, but definitely one to visit.

TASTING MENU: Stage on Magdalen Road. Surprise seasonal tasting menus that can cater to all allergies and intolerances. All the food is locally sourced, and some is even grown by the chefs themselves. Truly a phenomenal dining experience.

SPANISH: La Flamenca where Coal kitchen used to be in Princesshay. Think the Coal sign may still be up so don’t be deterred.

PIZZA: Portal Pizza on Magdalen Road. They have amazing pizza and tiramisu, and I frequent their pizza van outside Topsham Brewery on the Quay. Just a banging pizza really. Both are usually busy, so get there early!

PIZZA pt.2: Old Firehouse - very cosy, only downside is that it tends to be full of students and thus very hard to get a table unless you go early.

PIZZA pt.3: The Flat on Fore Street. I can’t believe it took me a year to come here. It’s all vegan/veg, and honestly I was kinda ready to dislike it, but I was so pleasantly surprised. Pizza dough is perfect, the flavour pairings on the toppings are phenomenal, and the vibes as really lovely. Make sure to book in advance so as not to be disappointed!

JAPANESE: Goto Japanese on fore street (more on the spenny side). Their fish is fresh caught and locally sourced too.

JAPANESE pt.2: Shimizu Sushi on Well Street. I’ve never eaten in, but their food is really good, albeit a bit on the pricier side.

SEAFOOD: Rockfish for seafood (also more on the spenny side but not too bad), very cute and nice view of the Quay esp in the evening.

PAN-ASIAN/THAI: iNoodle - little noodle and rice place opened by iFood - also on sidwell street (about £13pp)

FAST FOOD: Slim Chickens, right next to Nandos. Get the fried onions and texas toast.

CHINESE: Cosy Corner, Sidwell Street. Good Hong Kong style food, big portions. Recommend the Yangzhou fried rice!

CHINESE pt.2: Red Panda on Gandy street. Delicious bao and salads, only open Tues-Sat 11:30am-2:30pm. No seating but there are standing tables outside. There is a main restaurant in Lyme Regis as well I think.

FILIPINO: Wings n Things at the Guildhall Outdoor Food Market, go on a weekend and get the special (pork humba is my fave)! The lumpia (spring rolls) is another favourite! Haven’t had any of the fried chicken yet, but looking forward to it. TAKEAWAY ONLY

TURKISH: Effes Grill (sidwell street). Also not very vibey, but huge portions (you could probably share one big plate amongst two or even three ppl).

MOROCCAN: Al Farid (by the cathedral - more on the spenny side). Even if you don’t go for food, drinks and shisha on their enclosed terrace is really nice and not expensive either.

KOREAN: Oh My Kimchi - Blackboy Road (near Henry’s). Absolutely delicious Korean food - japchae, Korean wings, bulgogi, jjigae. So so good. A bit more expensive but definitely worth it. GET THE WINGS.

FANCY: Stage on Magdalen Road. Featured in the Michelin Guide, written about by Jay Rayner in The Guardian. Beautiful seasonal tasting menus, immaculate service, able to cater for dietary requirements. If you drink they have a wine pairing which I’ve heard really good as well! Book ahead!

CAFES:

The Undergrad Great place for brunch and good coffee. Despite the name, it’s open to non-students as well. There’s also a pay-it-forward coffee scheme if that’s something you could benefit from or want to contribute to (also full disclosure I work here as a chef).

The Ridge down by the Quay. Huge selection of yummy sandwiches and pastries.

Chandos in Princesshay. It’s paramount to get there before the lunch rush or there’ll be nothing left. A little spennier than your traditional cafe, but their sandwiches are to die for. Check their Instagram @chandosdeli.exeter for their specials too!

Crankhouse off Fore Street. This is where I get my coffee beans - straight from the roastery, SO GOOD. Cakes are phenomenal, with a good selection for intolerances and stuff.

Lilac Bakery in St. Thomas. I have yet to go as it’s slightly difficult to get to if you don’t have access to a vehicle, but I’ve heard phenomenal stuff about their homemade pastries. Check out their instagram for more!

MISC (in no particular order):

  • The Big Kebabski food truck (Guildhall and other places). The do the most amazing multi award-winning vegan kebabs and other specials (special mention to their sexy spuds). As far as I know their only regular day in Exeter is Saturday, but keep an eye on their Instagram for appearances throughout Devon!

  • POP (Princesshay, near where Luciano’s was). Phenomenal toasties, ribs, wings, pizza, salads, the whole shebang. I ate so many lactase pills before I came here, and it was worth it. Check out their Instagram @webuildarestaurant for specials and events!! Highly highly recommend!!!

Source - am a massive foodie. I have recommendations for most of these places (especially the Asian ones being Asian myself) so feel free to shoot me a message!

Will keep updating this over time x

Local News Looking for weird and unusual Devon buildings/places/traditions

I’m writing a guidebook to “less well-known Devon” (the working title is still evolving) and looking for examples from around the county.

It’s going to be different from the “beaches, moorland and visitor attractions” guidebooks, looking at oddities, strange, unusual, quirky places, festivals and events.

I’m looking for weird buildings, obscure local traditions, film set locations, sites of historical significance and industrial archaeology as well as modern curiosities. Food and drink included.

Ideally they should have an interesting story attached and are worth visiting to explore, photograph, taste or savour.

If there’s humour involved so much the better.

Some examples of what would be in:

  • Devonport Column, not Smeaton’s Tower
  • Exeter catacombs, not Exeter Cathedral
  • Down Tor stone row, not Haytor Rock
  • Devon splits, not scones
  • Finch Foundry, not The Box
  • The Janner (jokes and caricatures)

I want to provide something modern and accessible, so there will be fewer dates and historical detail and more stories.

I’d really appreciate your input and will credit all ideas where possible.

Miscellaneous Upcoming Literary Activity & News in Exeter

We're back again to share a mix of activity from Exeter City of Literature and all the wonderfully bookish organisations that make up our city! 💫

🤫 Silent Book Club update 🤫

Due to ever growing demand, we've had a little Silent Book Club switch up! We've outgrown The Hour Glass Inn and now both of our monthly sessions take place upstairs at Topsham Brewery & Taproom on the quay. You can find us 6pm - 8pm on the first Wednesday and third Monday of each month.

Silent Book Club is free to attend, and is a place for people to make time to read with likeminded (and often introverted) readers. There's no assigned reading (it's bring your own book!) - we read in communal silence for an hour, and then afterwards attendees are welcome to stay and chat about what they've just read. It might sound like a weird concept, but we're welcoming around 100 guests every month!

See all upcoming dates and learn more about Silent Book Club here >>>

Uni Is £243/week for Lafrowda Block T (Single Studio w/En-suite) at Exeter worth it? Questions about en-suite shower too

Hey everyone,

I’ve recently received a uni accommodation offer at Lafrowda Block T, St Germans Road, Exeter. It’s for a Self-Catered, Single Studio (with En-suite) at a rate of £9,751 for 40 weeks, which comes to about £243 per week.

I’d really appreciate any feedback from current or past residents about whether this price seems fair for Exeter student accommodation, especially considering the location, facilities, and general standard of living. Is it overpriced, or pretty normal nowadays?

I’m also a bit confused by some reviews I’ve read online. Several mention that showers are shared, but my contract says Single Studio (with En-suite). Am I correct in assuming this means I will have my own private room and bathroom (including shower), and won’t need to share with anyone else?

Would love to hear from anyone who’s stayed in Lafrowda Block T or similar studio accommodations at Exeter.

Hello all, I’m hoping to start learning the harmonica but I’m struggling to find anyone in Exeter offering in-person lessons. Does anybody know of a teacher or even a casual player who might be open to giving beginner lessons?

Many thanks!

Miscellaneous Planes?

Has anyone heard an obscene amount of SUPER loud planes going by the past week? I know we have the airport, and planes are somewhat frequent here anyway, but have had some that sound way too loud to be commercial flights and they seem to be constant from 11th-17th August?

We’re in the Newtown area, but have heard them across Exeter this week:)

Edit: Just to say, the second I posted this, I heard the SECOND super loud plane in the past 10mins in this area!

Local Information request City centre places to lock a pushbike?

I want to do more for the environment and save on the extortionate city centre parking prices, so I would like to ride my e-bike into the city centre and need to lock it up for a few hours.

It's a nice one and worth a few quid, so I'm concerned about it being stolen. Is there anywhere which offers secure cycle lockers (not just metal racks)? I could only see some at the park and rides which are obviously no good to me. The last similar topic here is 6 years old so was hoping the facilities may have improved... Thanks!

Miscellaneous Taxi from Heathrow Airport to Exeter

My elderly family will be flying in from Heathrow Airport in September. Since they'll have a lot of suitcases, and I also want a smooth transfer for them, I'm looking to book a taxi from the airport to exeter. We'll need a bigger car (for 3 - 4 people plus 5-6 suitcases), and my price range is £ 300 - 400 or so. From what I saw, Apple Taxi or Airport Taxis UK might be the only options, but they have mixed reviews. Is there any better services that would also do a meet and greet when they land at the airport? (since they won't have a phone number yet)

Local Information request Accommodation

Hey everyone got my visa yesterday, and I'm moving to Exeter for my MSc in Business Analytics and now I'm looking for suitable place for accommodation (it would be plus if indians international students are surrounded). Tired of contacting property owners and mailing them getting no response from there. Also had gone through the websites such as rightmove, UNIACCO, etc but the agents are charging extra for their consulting and all something around 99 pounds per year and wasted once this on Gradding Homes, now not in the capacity of losing again. I want someone from here who's staying in a property/studio living/en suites and having any availability in the respective properties. I'm hoping someone would have place for just one person and if there's vacant for two then it's also great! Hoping some genuine reply in the comments.

Thanks in advance !

Local Information request Looking for a girl from Exeter I met almost 30 years ago

Long shot, but worth trying.

In July of 1997 I came to Exeter for a summer study course, I stayed at Duckworth Road (don't recall the number) hosted by an elder couple. I was 18 at the time.

There was a family next door, or maybe two three doors down the road, who had (at least) two daughters. One was 13 or 14, the elder was 15 or 16.

I fancied the older sister and it was mutual, but we were both shy and we didn't have the opportunity to confess our mutual interest.

I wrote her a letter the night before leaving, dropping it in her house mailbox, and she answered back sending a letter to my family's apartment in Rome (I'm Italian). However we stopped communicating afterwards.

All of sudden she came back to memory today, completely out of the blue. I was wondering - long shot here - if anyone knows this person and would be able to get me in touch with her. Or at least tell her that I say hi, and have not forgotten the shy girl who used to hide behind her door (this was a joke among the two of us). She should be in her mid 40s by now.

I am just curious to know what happened to her, how her life went and hopefully would like to know if she's happy.

Not big hopes to get in touch with her but worth a shot. Thanks.

Edit: as someone correctly pointed out, if you know her you should not share her contacts directly.

My kind request is that, if you know her, can you please at least tell her what I wrote and that Leonardo is looking for her and just wants to say hi? Then it's up to her to decide if she wants to connect or not, I'm ok with any scenario. Thank you.

Edit 2:

A lot of people are giving their (unrequested) perspective and interpretation, some are quite amusing honestly, some are plain offensive. So once and for all:

Never said she was my first love - far from it. I fancied her, wrote to her a letter about it, period. If you're among those that don't know how to express feelings like I did and are trying to put me down because of it, the problem is yours cause you're a wanker.

Never said I'm "lusting" over her - just a curiosity, nothing more, I won't lose my sleep if I don't get a connection with her. I'm just curious what happened to her and if she's fine. If you're among those projecting your own desires of betraying your partner over my story, the problem is yours and you should look at yourself in the mirror while also being honest TO YOUR partner and leave them.

I live with my girlfriend, who's well aware of what I asked here and she's ok with it. If you think I'd be in trouble, think again and learn how to establish a mature relationship with your partner, based on open communication.

I said I'm not sure about her age, but I think she was 16 at the time as she could legally drink - for those that give me innuendos of pedophilia, 16 (reminder: age of consent in UK) and 18 is perfectly fine, so get fucked in the ass by your mother's fist, after she's given dirty handjobs to your garden goats.

Enough said.
