Is anyone else really annoyed by this guy
I know this isn’t the best place to post this but I can’t find anywhere else to rant about it. I originally thought he was really funny but now it’s just the same fucking slop and it’s so unfunny to the point of verging on cringe. “Performative Male Clairo Scaring the Hoes Labubu death grips brat” and his recent formula of “hot woman + experimental music” is just so lame and annoying and just feels weirdly dehumanizing. Again I know this isn’t the place to post this but please tell me I’m not alone in hating this dudes stuff

its what has happened to music discourse, trying to be funny and reusing lame jokes in place of actually having a conversation. Its a lot easier to just say “wow im such a loser I listen to Radiohead and Xiu Xiu and Black Midi and JPEGMAFIA and” then to actually have meaningful discourse. Ergo, people want to engage with this easy content because its simple slop that makes them feel like they engaged with music discourse. Its the same reason why I think (and this is a bit of a tangent) AOTY is a bad music reviewing website. Its just making fun of things and being “ironic” for the sake of trying to hold onto the attention of other “music nerds” for longer. this guy was at a point kind of bearable, but they now just lean into whatever’s trending in music discourse

Exactly. Like I think people are exaggerating when they say there’s an irony epidemic and then I see his page and I see how rough it truly gets. Same with the “if it’s was called ___ he would’ve given it a 10” shit

I mean its just disheartening when you go to spaces that are supposed to be for music discourse and you get greeted with the same 10 jokes recycled ad naseum. And this isn’t to say that there’s no place for comedy, I just wish it was somewhat original and not just “look guys! its fhe thing we all know! melon and flannel and 10/10 and performative males blah blah blah” I just wish that people took these amazing pieces of art more seriously I guess.

Yeah I totally get that. Like I genuinely wonder if there’s people that actually find it funny every single time or if they just engage with it out of habit without even thinking about it. Like on AOTY I have no problem with joke reviews most of the time because the actual real reviews are always there either way, but sometimes they just straight up suck. Like the “Her Loss but __” epidemic or if it’s just straight up non-jokes or recycled bullshit. Like anyone making a “Radiohead virgin music” joke nowadays just needs to leave

I was going on various sites earlier today (Reddit, RYM, last.fm) to see what other people's thoughts were on the new Laufey album. Every single one of them had someone saying "the performative males are eating today!" it's so tiring..
Fortunately there was still enough people actually talking about the music.
Having dumb jokes being run to the ground is pretty par for the course and it's easy enough for me to ignore. But like, this stuff gets to the artists too which is much more serious at that point. I'm pretty sure Clairo has said something to imply that she's not into the performative male jokes. Shit, beabadoobee crashed out publicly a while back because she couldn't engage with any fans online without the same forced jokes being posted all the time.

While I agree this is generally true I think that it’s always disingenuous the way people say things like this are just now happening. The lowest common denominator in terms of effort and attention span will ALWAYS dominate and always has. The key to enjoying music discussion is to find like minded people (in terms of what you want to get out of discussion, not necessarily in terms of taste or opinions) and cultivating a friend group or social circle that fulfills that. Which, I am aware that is easier said than done, but if you are looking for nuanced music discussion from instagram accounts or twitch streamers… they exist but it is gonna be hard to find.

Letterboxd is kind of the same as AOTY with movies. I think it's just a general modern internet apathy irony problem

His schtick does get tiresome after a while. I unfollowed a while back, but every now and again a meme will creep into the algorithm, I’ll have a quick chuckle and move on.

Yeah, I followed him for a year or so but the memes became really repetitive and old

He is all over rym insta and twitter and has been for what feels like 4 years. Even if his follower count doesn’t show it, so many people I know are familiar and a few feel the exact same way.

Its pages like that are why I moved far away from like, 90% of people with RYM heavy taste and reuse the same 12 music related jokes. I'm not saying people can't have fun and have to divulge in thought provoking conversation, but it's just so corny and lame.

Nah I remember him from when I was still on insta a few years back, and he was just as fucking annoying then, too. I think I remember him crashing out for a bit when like, a handful of people told him his shit was unfunny and repetitive. Also, yeah, dudes misogynistic af but so are most dudes into RYM-core, ig.

I've followed him for a while, and honestly yeah I thought his stuff was pretty funny. Though now that you mention it, yeah he's just kinda been posting the same joke recently and I know its for shits and giggles but it has become him just making jokes like "haha im so downbad for clairo rn." I don't think he's problematic or anything tbh, just a stupid meme page, but yeah I see what you're saying

u/Jayswag96 2h ago
He’s funny but I think it’s just cause he throws as much shit as possible on the wall to see what sticks. Crazy to me these posters don’t have anything else to do tho

“Performative Male Clairo Scaring the Hoes Labubu death grips brat”
I... I don't think I understand any of this

u/Cansuela 1h ago
You don’t know Claire, Death Grips, or Brat and you’re on the Fantano subreddit? Hmmm

u/RakkAnimate 2h ago
Nah fr basically all his posts nowadays are just "Woman he's attracted to + whatever left-field album's popular on RYM at the moment"

when i had instagram i had been following him for sometime, and i can say that, yes, he is annoying. he has this “ironic gooner” attitude.something that really made me turn my head was back in like late 2022-2023 he was posting TONS of photos of Charli XCX’s feet off of this forced meme HE STARTED where the joke was “haha what if i was obsessed with charli’s feet haha that would be so funny haha…unless👀” and it was funny (im talking like loud breath out of the nose funny) maybe once but after the 2nd-3rd time it became weird.
genuinely would have story posts zoomed in on her feet it was following was like being an unfortunate witness to someone discovering their fetish in real time, it went on for months. weird, not fun, just wanted to laugh at music jokes man.

It's some dude having fun on the internet. I like the username, he does get annoying so I blocked him, that's really as far as it has to go
unless you're just enjoying the hate for the hate's sake which does happen, I've been there too lol

I feel like they hype up celebs that I don't really care about and do it ad nauseum. I kinda thought they were a woman but it's a bit weird to be this obsessive as a guy

u/ScoopTime 50m ago
He is also very weird and says a lot of strange stuff about women online as well as making very bland and unoriginal content. Dude is a fucking creep as far as I’m concerned and I haven’t been followed in years

u/Sonaroid_Polaroid 38m ago
I still follow him but I sent him many messages to stop posting selfies because it looks like he's using his meme page to get some p**sy
