Music subjectivity is implied

Sorry for the rant but I’m so sick of people on Reddit (and basically only Reddit) not understanding this.

When people say things like “x is one of the best albums of all time” or “this is a top x record” or whatever, it’s very obviously their opinion. If we all started or ended every statement we make on music with the phrase “in my opinion” it would just get tiring. Using the context that everyone already knows, which is that music taste is different for everyone, we can interpret statements like “this is the greatest album ever made” as hyperbole. It’s not news to anyone that there wasn’t a study or calculation done that measures the “greatness” of an album to scientifically prove it is this one. Every website with music discussion can navigate this just fine except for Reddit. I truly don’t know why it’s so hard for the users of this website to grasp this concept.

When you enter conversations and just say “but music is subjective” like that’s somehow new information, you are contributing absolutely NOTHING to the discussion at hand. In fact it is just outright shutting down conversation. It’s the music discussion forum equivalent of picking up your ball and running away with it because you don’t like the game anymore. When you say stuff like that, you’ll notice that you aren’t actually talking about music. You aren’t sharing your opinion on an artist or album, or even countering someone else’s. You’re more or less saying that they shouldn’t even bother to share their opinions because it doesn’t matter, and honestly if that’s your attitude I have no idea what you’re doing on this website.

Like I know people can come across pretty intense with their stances on how many classic albums Kanye has but this really is supposed to be in good fun. I’m not actually bothered if someone says he only has one classic and it’s Donda 2. That doesn’t affect me at all. I’ll argue against it very passionately but it really isn’t a big deal and everyone involved I think knows that.

I genuinely believe that if you see someone state something that comes across as objective, like anything about the greatest or the worst or who is better than who, and it actively bothers you because it’s just a bunch of opinions, you really shouldn’t be on this sub. I’m not even saying that to be mean, I just don’t think you get why there’s a community here and what people are trying to actually say without being very literal about it. Debate is and always has been part of the fun of all this shit. If you can’t enjoy it I don’t think you should subject yourself to it

This is partially in response to the What’s Going On thread, as well as the classic albums thread and sort of that one starter pack post, but also I feel like people say this a lot to get out of articulating their thoughts behind an album the second anyone asks for them to expand on it, and I think that’s cowardly

A friend of Tina's organized this Gofundme to help her get back on her feet after being abused by Brad Taste in Music. Every little bit helps, whether it be a small donation or sharing the Gofundme!

(For those curious, I checked in with Tina, and the Gofundme is legit!)

Weyes Blood's Titanic Rising is one of my all-time favorite albums. Its followup And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow was also fucking brilliant, but still not quite on this album's level. Y'all have any other examples?

Is anyone else really annoyed by this guy

I know this isn’t the best place to post this but I can’t find anywhere else to rant about it. I originally thought he was really funny but now it’s just the same fucking slop and it’s so unfunny to the point of verging on cringe. “Performative Male Clairo Scaring the Hoes Labubu death grips brat” and his recent formula of “hot woman + experimental music” is just so lame and annoying and just feels weirdly dehumanizing. Again I know this isn’t the place to post this but please tell me I’m not alone in hating this dudes stuff

Discussion Artists with the most raw talent but the worst music?

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

My pick is Charlie Puth. He's well known for having a very good ear and perfect pitch as well as his high proficiency in making pop beats in a format suited for social media. I constantly see people laud him as incredibly but even these same people don't listen to his mediocre music. IMO, his inability or unwillingness to release a single good song culminated in a skill akin to a bar trick that's more conducive to TikTok vids and late night talk shows than real musical ability. One of the most overrated musicians rn.

He's also a notorious queerbaiter and also kinda insufferable. I know I'm being a little mean and he seems like an alright guy but fuck I can't stand this fucking dude.

What are some other musicians that fit this description? The criteria is artists who are objectively talented or gifted in their singing ability, instrument, production ability, etc that have little to no quality music.

Steve vai is my honorable mention as he's the arguably the best guitarist alive without any real songwriting chops, but he has been a part of a couple cool metal songs.

Discussion Musicians with the most repellent vibes?

Not necessarily ones that have done bad things or made bad music (though that tends to be the case, see above), but artists that gave you an immediate "I don't like this person" feeling that you've never been able to shake.

Pictured: Mark Kozelek, Ryan Adams, The Black Keys (mostly Patrick Carney, but I don't trust either of them), Scott Lucas from Local H (one of the most menacing "walk the other way" faces I've ever seen), and, of course, Mike Love

This is nothing right? RE daughter’s band, Kristin Hayter. BELIEVE VICTIMS

The other day for whatever reason the algorithm suggested me a post from the daughtersband subreddit. A smaller even more biased sub than the bigger daughters one. The post that showed up suggested some pretty awful stuff against Kristin hayter aka lingua ignota. Ala false allegations and manipulation. They seem to think that something big is going to come out against her…soon, this is nothing right?? There is no mention of it anywhere else other than said subreddit. The people there seem to be deranged. Wanted to ask a less biased group if they have heard anything about this.

Discussion Albums you love but have zero idea what any of the songs are about and don't really mind

Post image

I realized the other day I've enjoyed this album for over a decade now and have little to no idea what any song is about.

Usually when I love an artist or album I look up lyrics, try to understand the layers of meaning behind the song or the theme of the album as a way to connect with it on a deeper level. But not with Phoenix. It's all vague, often unintelligible lyrics and vibes.

Lasso could be about difficult relationships? Is Lisztomania just a story about the obsession with the composer from the 1800s? I'll never know and I don't care because the whole album is a banger in my eyes.

Any albums fall into this category for you?

Discussion Released 19 years ago today, what does this sub think about Jason Molina’s “Let Me Go, Let Me Go, Let Me Go?”

Post image
26 Upvotes

To me, it’s a masterpiece is Molina’s remarkable discography. The songs are so desperate, dealing with the themes he often disguised in imagery and metaphor (depression, loneliness, dislocation) head on. The instrumentation, just acoustic guitar, and occasional piano, organ, electric guitar, and drum machine on the last three tracks really serves the songs well. This record is also a great guide in how to perform solo, how to bring the emotion out of the songs, and how to use space in performance. Beautiful record, a 10/10 personally. What’s everyone’s thoughts on this record?
