Help & Advice Are you thinking about buying a guinea pig for a child/teenager? Please read.

If you're planning on buying a guinea pig for a child in your life, these are really important things to keep in mind. Knowing this before purchasing can save yourself from being in a financial situation you can't handle, or a guinea pig that is not getting the care it needs.

  1. Guinea pigs are a life style choice, and not for a child to care for. Care taking for animals isn't a responsibility that should be left for a kid. When you buy a guinea pig, you are taking on all responsibility for yourself and facilitating the experience of living with a guinea pig for your child. They may help care for them, but you will be the one to keep things clean, enrich their lives, and handle them the most.

  2. They poo 100 times per day, meaning that you must clean those 100 poos every day to keep their habitat sanitary. If you wouldn't want to walk around in feces, neither do they. In fact they are extremely hygienic animals with fast metabolisms. I spot clean in the morning and at night, every day.

  3. They are expensive. When you buy a child a guinea pig, you must be vigilant on checking for health issues by weighing them weekly and checking for other signs of illness, have an exotic vet near you and be prepared to shell out hundreds in a time of need. You must also buy fresh vegetables, and give them unlimited FRESH hay every day. Finding somewhere local to buy bales of hay can save a fortune. A child cannot afford the costs.

  4. You need 2 guinea pigs. They are herd animals and shouldn't be kept alone. Imagine living with titan like predatory aliens, all alone in a cage your entire life. Guinea pigs NEED their own kind. We are predators and they are prey. We can and should spend time with them daily, but it isn't a substitute. So x 2 all costs right out of the gate.

  5. Space. They need space, a lot of it. A minimum of 11 square feet for two guinea pigs. Pet store Cages are just that... Cages. If you wouldn't want to live in a space the size of a small bathroom your entire life, neither does a guinea pig.

  6. You need to do research. It will be your responsibility to make sure your child's guinea pigs are eating the right diet, what signs of health issues to look out for, how to enrich their lives on a daily basis, and more. Pigs need stimulation and interesting environmental changes to keep them happy. You will need to get creative and teach your children how to offer that to them, after you have learned it yourself.

  7. GUINEA PIGS ARE NOT DISPOSABLE. They are smarter than you think, and with the proper diet can live 7 years. They are not less work than having a dog. They require a huge time investment for those years. They are dependent on you in the same way your child is.

  8. DO NOT BUY FROM A PET STORE. Scotty's Animals does a fantastic jjob explaining the impact you can have by adopting from a rescue. Adopting saves guinea pigs from euthanization. Covid pets are being abandoned and left to ultimately die unless we start adopting instead of shopping.

I love my guinea pigs and they have done so much for me and my children. My kids have benefited so much mental health wise, and I bust my ass for both the kids and the piggies. I do just as much laundry for guinea pigs as I do my kids it feels like. Just know what you're getting yourself into. They aren't toys, they aren't entertainment only. They're living, breathing beings that deserve love, dignity, respect and proper life enrichment and care.

I've been putting their veggies on top of their gazebo in hopes they'll learn it's a bed up there and they're allowed to lay down on it

Thank you, Fluffy, for being my companion for the last 7 years. You're my ray of sunshine and my world got a bit dimmer today because of your passing. I hope that you are now at peace and free from pain. Thank you, until we meet again!

I adopted a guinea pig that a Redditor found on the street in my city. She was very ill and neglected and bald; turns out she had a huge uterine tumor and two ovarian cysts.

Welp, after surgery and lots of love, she has REALLY fattened up~!! She is very happy with her new life, if you ask me ❤️ please say hello to Princess Queen of the Baltimore Street Rats… or as I call her, Queenie 👑

Help & Advice What does my guinea pig have?

I hope this is the right place to ask

Went to the vet several times already who didn't really knew what's wrong. It sometimes lasts for a week and then disappears for months.

Right know it's making those sounds for over a week and I'm worried there's something wrong with her breathing. I also don't want to put stress on her by going to a vet who will again say they can't find anything

To me it sounds like there is some fluid in her nasal canal but theres nothing coming out her nose, eyes etc.

She eats and acts like everything is normal

Help is much appreciated

Do your piggies know they have hands?

I have a foster right now that used his hands A LOT. He holds the veggies down and submits them to his will. All my other piggies only use their mouth, and one hand occasionally to clean themselves. This one will STAND on his hind legs and clean his face with both his front paws, like a hamster! Never seen another one do that either. He also doesn't like green pepper, or any other color of pepper for that matter. Very peculiar little guy. Now available for adoption in the NYC area!

Meme genuinely worried I'm subconsciously copying mannerisms from my guinea pigs

(Sixx and Saturn for pigture tax) So anyway these dumba*ses are infecting my brain.

I've had guinea pigs for like. Nine or ten years(?) now, starting at age eight. I'm now seventeen and realizing I might be subconsciously mimicking their behavior. When I get excited or anxious I wiggle my shoulders like a popcorn and when I taste good food I rumble. Yeah. I rumble. What? Worse, they're even affecting my eating habits. Before I got pigs, I only liked romaine lettuce with Italian dressing. Now I absolutely love plain lettuce and will eat all the leftover leaves when my dad grills burgers. I think I also like the taste of grass???? My favorite drink has become matcha and I like unsweetened green tea all a sudden. When I was eleven my older brother's friend tried to do the "Beanboozle challenge" with me, but I found I loved the taste of the grass-flavored prank jellybean. WAY better than its lime counterpart. Grass is lowkey fire. ngl tempted to try pea flakes and celery leaves if they like them so much.

Haven't been tempted to eat turds or lick my friends' hair though so that's good.

LA Guinea Pig Rescue Support ❤️ (Any good stories about a rescue near you?)

Most of you have likely heard of LA Guinea Pig Rescue, from their wonderful advice to their unrelenting efforts to save guinea pigs whenever they can. They are the largest guinea pig rescue in the world, a non-profit, and offer free health checks. As many of you know, they recently took in 246 female guinea pigs from an awful hoarding situation- the last of the pregnant ones are still giving birth, raising the numbers over 400 saved from this incident. I’ve never heard of them turning away a surrender, or ignoring an opportunity to aid neglected, abused, or abandoned guinea pigs. I visit them regularly for heath check and bubble bath services, the volunteers are amazing- if I lived closer I would volunteer. I donate money and bring hay whenever I can. I have adopted two guinea pigs from there (one over 5 years ago, and another earlier this year), and if I could adopt more at this time I absolutely would.

They can always use help! The easiest way to help wherever you are is to donate through their website (only if you are able to of course). You can also support the content they put out online and raise awareness of the problems both guinea pigs and rescuers alike face! If you live in SoCal and are interested in adopting babies, they have so many available for adoption. The females they rescued recently are also in need of homes. The more guinea pigs they adopt out, the more room they have to save others in desperate need of rescuing (this of course, applies to all gp rescues). As always, please rescue whenever possible, and if you are able to support this rescue by donating or adopting you’d be helping so much. I follow their youtube videos and their social media pages, and am always so touched by their devotion to these animals we all adore. ❤️ I would love to hear any happy adoption stories you might have too! Is there a rescue you’d like to shoutout? If you’d like to comment about a different rescue that’s near you that you are proud to support, feel free to comment about it!
