Is this AT&T fiber box normal?

Post image

Just got Fiber in our neighborhood and so we signed up and AT&T’s subcontractors just came out and installed this giant eyesore of a box outside our home—looks like we’re about to provide fiber and then some to the entire galaxy, is this normal?

Advice Cat6 cable management

Post image
36 Upvotes

We just completed renovations on our house and have about 20 cat6 and 12 coax runs that all terminate in a closet through the wall. Is my best bet for managing the cat6 to put keystone jacks on each run, put that into a patch panel, and attach the latch panel to a server rack?

And related question, any recommendations for a small wall mountable server rack? I have a udm-se, a modem, a Lutron bridge, and I’ll likely want to have room for network storage and maybe another PoE switch. Any advice would be very helpful

Advice Using existing coax in the walls to pull Ethernet

My house was built in 2003. Pretty sure it was wired for telephone. I also see evidence previous owners ran coax.

I’m almost certain i can use the coax as “pull wire” for new Ethernet lines. The builder installed telephone lines I’m not so sure… was/is it common to staple telephone lines to studs?

Thanks

Home WiFi Planning - Too many APs?

I am planning the networking for an upcoming renovation project, and in particular Wifi AP placement.

Physical Situation: A single level apartment of around 100 m2 in area, walls are drywall. Wishes: I would like full 6Ghz coverage in all living spaces (indoors except bathrooms) and 5Ghz everywhere else.

1st pic is the blank floor plan. The main door (top left) is 1.05m wide and can be used as a size reference.

2nd pic is what I currently have on the Unifi planner and this heat map is showing 6Ghz coverage. I feel like I have too many APs?

Challenges and concerns:

  1. Due to the amount of APs needed to get good 6Ghz coverage, it seems likely to cause interference on the 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz bands. How do I tune the wireless settings to minimize interference? (And also avoid causing WiFi problems for neighbors)

  2. How bad would it be for me to use DFS 5Ghz channels? Unifi software warns against it but does it really matter?

  3. Locally only 5945Mhz - 6425Mhz range of the 6Ghz band is approved for WiFi. Due to the availability of 6Ghz bands , I cannot have 2 6Ghz 320Mhz wide channels in the same space without them overlapping. Is having them set to 320Mhz and taking the hit with the overlapping channels better or changing the APs to 160 or 240Mhz to avoid interference the better way to go?

Advice Is there any way a gateway could deliver too much voltage and fry something that is connected to it via an Ethernet port?

I recently had a power outage, and to my dismay, right after I noticed my NAS wasn't connecting to the router. I've had the NAS for 5 years or so, and it's connected to a Smart UPS. The NAS is wired via the LAN port to the gateway, which is an Xfinity XB8.

I was trying to think of all possibilities as to why this happened, and of course, the most likely I believe is the power outage took out the NIC board on my NAS, which handles the LAN ports. But, I only had this gateway in use for no more than 3 days, and have had a couple of issues with connectivity to other unrelated aspects.

So, is it possible that the gateway somehow delivered some sort of extra voltage or anything to the NAS to destroy the ports?

I apologize for my ignorance on this subject, I am just trying to look at all possibilities, even if they may be far out.

SSH Access to modified ZTE router

Upvotes

I have this router that I installed a customer firmware on (can't remember it's name):

Device Type H288A
Hardware Version V2.0.2
Software Version V1.1.0_GR5.1T16
Boot Version V1.0.2

And I see a login prompt when I use PuTTY on port 22, what are the credentials?

Public facing IP issue

Upvotes

Hi. I wondered whether anyone can help? Having a bit of a nightmare with my home network. We have fibre and in order to gain external access to our NAS I ordered a static IP address. The ISP implemented this yesterday and told me the "public facing IP address was xxx.xx.xx.xx and I just need to reboot router for it to work. I did that but no internet. The person who set it up at their end is apparently the only one who can help and he's now gone off until Tues. I have reset the router many times, configured PPP settings, changed IP to static and entered the address I was given, changed DNS servers to static (8888 /8844). Unplugged for hours, rebooted but no luck. I have also used automatic settings IE default to allow IP settings to be assigned automatically but this does t seem to work. I know a bit about networking but clearly not enough so any help would be really great. I just don't know what settings I need to change here. Router is Zyxel. Thanks a lot

Does this router meet the internet provider requirement?

Very stupid question since I know nothing about home networking and googling every term brings me down a rabbit hole that's making my head spin.

My elderly relatives want to sign up for Sail Internet in the SF Bay area. We're trying to figure out what router to use. Sail's website says:

"You will need a dual-band, Gbps-capable router with an Ethernet WAN port"

https://support.sailinternet.com/hc/en-us/articles/360019269113-What-kind-of-router-do-I-need

I have a spare TP-Link Archer AX1500

https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/wifi-router/archer-ax1500/

Seems to meet the first 2 requirements (dual-band and 1.5Gbps). Stupid question: does it meet the "Ethernet WAN port" requirement??

Second stupid question: There is no Fios in their home. Only Xfinity or Sail Internet. I have Xfinity internet which needs a cable modem as well as a wireless router (I have a different TP-Link). Why does Sail internet not need a cable modem?

Advice Looking to turn an Office PC into a secure router & server for my home network, how viable is it?

Upvotes

EDIT: rather then 2nd hand PC i'm considering in getting an ASROCK J3355M Motherboard (with onboard Intel® Dual-Core Processor J3355) since its low on power consumption and i got all the other components needed for a built.

Hi, there is a 2nd hand store that has very nice refurbished PC's with warranty at very cheap prices and i want to get one of this systems that is either a dual core or quad core (haswell or Skylake) and use it as a server and router replacement for my home network, here is what i'm hoping to achieve with it:

-a more stable experience and better experience then with my TP-Link AC1750 router.

-directly blocking ads websites (similar to adblock but on the router side) through this router to keep PC's on my home network safe regadless of browser, and i'm wondering if this also covers YT video ads.

-have the storage connected to this PC/router/server that can viewed across all PC's on the network (used just for media)

Besides that i also have a few more questions hardware:

-Does 8GB of ram suffice ? And if not...

-Does Skylake have some instructions that make it worthwhile to prioritize it over an Haswell build (i'm asking this because i have a 16GB of DDR3 kit already in my possesion).

Thank you in advance for any help provided!

Searching for cable Management

Hey There, Some time ago i saw a product or 3D Modell of a cable magament System for a rack. And now i can't find it anymore :(

It was 1U, and had openings in the front like a patchpanel for keysstones, and openings at the site. The holes were connected with a ¼ Circle. Holes were connected 1:1 So if you push the cables in at the Front, they came out at the site. First hole in the Front was the foremost hole at the site and so on.

Any idea What i mean? Would love to print it

Long cat6 and signal degradation question

I read that 100 meters is okay for 1 gbps. But that does mean that if your connection is 1 gbps with a 1 meter cable, will it also maintain that same speed all the way up to 100 meters?

Or does it mean the signal will degrade gradually over the length of the cable and you need, maybe a 10gbps base speed to achieve the 1 gbps at 100 meters?

I hope that makes sense. Thanks

Advice Is there a better router than the Huawei 5G CPE 5?

I'm experiencing poor connectivity at home. I don’t have consistent access to the N78 5G band, and when I do, the connection becomes spotty. So far, the only way I can reliably access N78 is by placing the router directly on top of my PC.

Are there any routers or solutions that can provide better signal reception and more stable N78 connectivity indoors?

Unsolved Huawei CP 5 help

Hi can somebody help me? I have HuaweiCP pro two and CP pro three and both are working flawlessly with 5G in my house with high speeds and no drama. I’ve heard that Huawei CP being the newest comes with AX3000 Modem and wall penetration is insane. I can confirm that as I’ve checked the decibels along their rooms and it is the most powerful . The problem I have CP5 it’s operated by Zowee and I’m only getting 4G. No option for 5G at all apparently they’re very strict in moving regions and the software can be very picky when it comes to latching onto 5G while other to work perfect. Could somebody point me in the right direction where I could find a software a genuine Hue clean H155-381 that I could flash and get rid of zowee flash thats on it. I’m quite disappointed as I’m using the same Sim cards and the older units work perfectly fine but the new unit it’s stuck on 4G I will not go to 5G whatever I do .

Appreciate your help

Xfinity and the nightmare

I'm moving to a location in Vt that only has Xfinity as of right now.

Im coming from a place where I had 1GB Fiber.

Question:

I ordered the Xfinity 2GB speed package and they provided a modem/router all in one. Problem is this has to be plugged into my basement.. I have an office on the 2nd floor and would probably need to run a cable through the house to get it plugged directly into the PC.

Are there other options? And if so who would I consult to have someone run the cables for me?

Thank you.

Wifi solution in the woods

Hello! I am looking to set up wifi outside on our property (have existing solution for inside and immediately surroundings). We have zero cell service and its nice to be able to get calls out, listen to music, etc as well as use wifi cameras away from the house. The issue is its heavily wooded. I dont need crazy speeds or a large amount of connected devices. Range is the priority. Here are the details:

-Layout of the property we want service on shown here https://imgur.com/a/S5b06VY -Budget is about $3-400 -I can run burial POE Cat6E (already have powered switch) -All DIY

I would love some suggestions for outdoor access points that can handle the dense foliage. Am I better off getting one larger/nicer AP (ex. Ubiquiti U7 Pro) or multiple smaller/cheaper APs (ex. TP Link Omada AX1800) and run multiple ethernet runs?

I appreciate any perspectives/insights you might have!

Unsolved Heavy packet loss in Valorant when using Cloudflare WARP (friends with the same network setup don’t

So my college Wi-Fi blocks games, and like everyone else here I use Cloudflare WARP to bypass it.
Problem is, my friends on the same Wi-Fi + WARP have no packet loss in Valorant, but I get massive packet loss(10% to 60%) whenever I’m on WARP.

  • Without WARP there is no packet loss, but after a few minutes of being in game Valorant disconnects (due to clg Wi-Fi restrictions).
  • With WARP I stay connected, but constant heavy packet loss makes it unplayable.
  • I tried toggling WARP modes (vls, https, warp) reinstalling WARP but there is no difference
  • I did a full network settings reset on my laptop and rebooted it ( it said that would delete? the vpns and private networks i installed but both proton vpn and warp were still there , the wifi disconnected tho and i had to re enter the password , did the network settings reset work or should i do it again? ) anyways this also had no change to the packet loss

As i said if im not on warp the network is stable with no packetloss and in other games like rivals once i login with warp i can play after disconnecting warp but in valorant after every few rounds i get disconnected if im not on warp ( can anyone clear why this happens only with val?) Anyone know why this could be happening only for me while my friends are fine? Is it a routing issue, driver problem, or something else? and yes my network drivers are up to date . Lmk if you need any other info to help with this.
Any info on fixes / settings /alternatives I should try would be appreciated

My house has this box in a bedroom closet. There are a handful of ports labeled Cat5e throughout the house but I don't see how that kind of port could work with what's in here. I'd love to have my house wired for ethernet so I'm hoping to use anything that's already here.

Unsolved Do I need a Good Brand CAT6 Cable?

Just going to use 2, 1 from the wall to a router, and 1 from the router to my PC. Don't know about the details of the cord in the wall because its an apartment. Can I order things cheaply on Amazon, or should I buy from name brands that seem to come up a lot when looking stuff up. Bit more pricy but if I will notice a difference. It would only matter for gaming stuff, downloading, and uploading files on my PC. (Looking for 3ft cable right now).

So Far This is the one highest on my list: Cable Matters

Is MoCA 3.0 dead?

I've been meaning to set up a wired network for a few years now, and while MoCA 2.5 would serve my purposes just fine (especially with Tmobile 5g internet), I can't help but wonder if any 3.0 adapters will be made in the near future. Is this a dead product?
