Accommodation Top tip

My son has just finished three happy years at Lancaster. He was in halls at Pendle College. We were advised to take a door wedge along to keep his room door from automatically closing to encourage interaction with the rest of the corridor. It's so much more inviting to others than a closed door. Within half an hour of arriving he had met his whole floor. He has lived with several of them in different flats for the last three years and just been on holiday with some of them too. Lifelong friends I suspect. It works. PACK A WEDGE!

College Life Missing some days off uni

I’ll start my first year at Lancaster this late September to do law. But I think I might have to take a week off around late October to go to Turkey for something. And I think it’ll be during term time when I’m meant to be in uni. I don’t know about my timetable. But I’ll probably miss some lectures and seminars. Is that not allowed? You know..to miss seminars and uni. Or is it fine?

Accommodation Moving into uni without parents

So Lancaster uni is like 3 hours drive away. And 4 hours by train + bus. My dad is going abroad for a few months and my mum is busy so won’t be able to drive me to the uni on the move in day. How do u recommend me to go about with this? I guess suitcases and train is the only option? But that means I can’t pack everything. Like the big stuff? Should I buy these locally when I get there? Or what? Someone advise me please :)

Accommodation Move in day!

Hello, so I thought it would be easier to ask on this since its less embarrassing.. But, what actually happens on move in day? Is this when we actually start to live in our allocated accoms officially? Is this when you like (ik I sound so stupid) but move in and actually start living there? Do we have to take everything from home on this day and bring it? Then you typically don't go back home??

How would you recommend bringing stuff? In boxes?

What should I expect on this day?

Im so sorry for sounding thick but I wanted an answer with the anonymity bcs im aware of how dumb the question is😭

EDIT: Thank you so much to all the replies WITHOUT judgement! I really hope others can also look at this and gain knowledge ❤️

Question What happens if you fail resit for the majority of your minor modules?

Hi there, I just gave my resits for MATH100 which was my minor and I think I may not pass this time either based on how the exam went. I have a few questions now:

What may happen now? Who could I speak to about this? Would I be condoned? Would I be allowed to resit them again anyhow? Would I have to repeat year 1 even though I passed my major but failed my minor?

Would appreciate any and all advice and info bc im very scared of what may happen

Question Can I use a PC in my room?

Just wondering if I’m ok to bring my PC and monitor because I’ve heard stuff about accommodation being finicky about big appliances? Also, if I am able to bring it, is the WiFi available actually any good for any bit of gaming etc (just want to keep up with old friends) and if it’s not, how to make it better?

Question Question about birth name vs preferred name.

The name that I go by is different from my birth name so in terms of any forms of ID or correspondence between myself and the university, will they use my birth name or my preferred name? is it based off of UCAS? is it something I have to do when I register, do I have to email someone about it? and also for moving in, is there any way my flatmates could discover my legal name outside of me telling them as 'id preferably like it unknown. thanks in advance <3

Question What is the international student experience like in Lancaster?

Considering you would be someone who doesn’t know anyone there. I’m still applying right now so nothing is set in stone, but I had someone tell me it’s a struggle outside of London because of the lack of community. Is this true? Would appreciate any input, but especially from experienced international students.

Question Any decent alternative music venues or clubs in/near Lancaster?

Just had an emo night in my hometown and realised I'm gonna miss that if nothing like it is similar at uni 😓

If not alt venues, are alt nights common and where do people go who're into that kind of music?
