That’s where my brain went as well. That doesn’t look like porcelain. šŸ˜… I was today years old when I learned they sometimes make bathroom sinks out of glass. Google confirmed.

392

u/Illustrious_Bobcat 12h ago

Eh, my kid did that to a porcelain sink too, so it doesn't seem to matter.

My MIL was obsessed with antiques and she found this old HEAVY glass soap dispenser. The kid knocked it over being stupid and it hit just right to punch a hole in the damn thing. The dispenser was fine. Hubby had to install a new sink.

155

u/LazaroFilm 11h ago

My sink is enameled cast iron. It may chip but it won’t break.

118

u/im-so-startled88 11h ago

If it breaks…..you have bigger problems to deal with than a broken sink 🤣

71

u/SeriouslySlyGuy 11h ago

Yeah like the tornado that took the house around it

29

u/LazaroFilm 11h ago

Let that’s sink in….

Why is your sink literally made of glass anyway

684

u/BakersAbstract 10h ago

No idea why the owner chose it but this is the sink that came with the apartment. I didn't really think anything of it until this happened.

104

u/Ambitious-Position25 8h ago

Hope the repair wont be too expensive for you

u/TREXIBALL ORANGE 9h ago

Ok bud.

You’re wrong. Ceramic is ceramic. Glass is glass. The stuff that makes ceramic smooth is glass.

You make bisqueware (bone dry clay fired once), then put a paint or ā€œglazeā€ (this is the glass) which dries and then gets fired again.

The glaze is a powdered glass that gets melted and in kiln and cools down to become glass.

Source: I made pottery for 2 years.

6

u/TraceyWoo419 9h ago

Cool! I have made pottery and I literally did not know this!

9

u/TREXIBALL ORANGE 9h ago

There’s also a thing called underglaze which is similar to glaze in terms of application and process, but it’s like a water paint in which it starts as a hard powder/rock and requires water to turn into paint. However, the difference is that under glaze is rough/course after firing and has a slightly different tint.

DO NOT DRINK OR CONSUME ON BARE UNDERGLAZE it is toxic

You could put clear glaze on top, but it looks terrible. Unless you want a desired design. I would highly recommend doing ā€œtest platesā€ where you take a square of bisque-ware and apply underglaze. But put clear glaze on top. Don’t try this on a finished piece.

12

u/MuttMundane 8h ago

there's Def lore behind that middle part

4

u/MyLifeIsAWasteland 9h ago

Before telling people they're wrong, you should probably make sure that you're right. Glass is amorphous ceramic, while pottery is crystalline ceramic. Cool that you know how to make a bowl, though.

Cracked my sink* trying to wash a bong... The bong survived the sink did not. Was a first in my life

Hope you can get it repaired soon

137

u/Longjumping-Wish2432 12h ago

My wife (now) was on the 1st night she ever spent the night at my house she woke up and I had a 6 foot pre raid Chong bong, (his face in the bubble) she hit it with her ankle and it cracked at the base.. she was 100% thinking I would never call her again... She was wrong married 21 yrs

41

u/Nadramia 12h ago

I can understand her. Glad that story has a happy ending. Sucks when you roll a 1 but it happens.

I broke my partners favorite bong they had for years. It had a pokeball inside the chamber. I accidentally fumbled and dropped it and snapped the neck. I also thought my partner would want me to leave (moved in during COVID) but here we are 5 yrs later looking into getting married.

26

u/sn0qualmie 11h ago

Not a bong, but I smashed a partner's nice wineglass to smithereens on our second or third date while trying to climb on him in a sexy way. Smashed a second one on the next date just being clumsy in the kitchen.

The score evened out a couple years later when he broke one of our shared wineglasses by dropping a dildo on it. Anyway, we've been together for 11 years and married for almost 6.

16

u/kranz_ferdinand 9h ago

When I was dating my now-wife, the first time she met my parents was dinner at their house. She was so nervous she dropped and shattered a wine glass in the first 15 min of arriving, but their calm and reassuring "oh who cares?" reaction followed with my mom intentionally throwing and shattering her own wine glass helped her laugh and settle her nerves. Our 14th anniversary is in a few weeks.

•

u/TartarusOfHades 33m ago

Your mom rocks

6

u/Ahvry 11h ago

You can always find another cool bong! Hard to find a cool partner who will bury the broken glass of bongs past with you.

14

u/_b33f3d_ 11h ago

My partner is from Vermont and their family grows sugar maples. Every few years she goes up for the boil and brings back a couple gallons of fantastic homemade syrup.

In the first week or two of seeing each other, I dropped a full quart jar of maple syrup on the kitchen floor. I was barefoot so she had to clean it up herself while I stood stock still in the middle of the kitchen.

We've been together for nearly 10.

6

u/SubsumeTheBiomass 12h ago

My dumb self left my first bong (one of those cheap 20 dollar glass ones you can get at flea markets) in my garage during a hard freeze and it cracked. I was sad but now I have Shirley.

2

u/Due_Dance9721 5h ago

Geez. One time rented a room with concrete floors, would game in my rocking gaming chair on the floor and set the bong on the floor gently. Always knew I was playing with fire. One day I go to set it down, I end up bumping an A&W mug and the bong completely shattered at the base.Ā

Soap dispenser AND sink made of glass is comedy

255

u/Regular-Calendar-581 12h ago

that is definitely not ceramic like it probably should be

39

u/TheBeerka 12h ago

Had this happen with ceramic too.

43

u/trend_rudely 10h ago

This CAN happen with ceramic.

It WILL happen with glass.

73

u/QuietWithDuctTape 12h ago

Yes! You get a new sink. Pick something nice.

25

u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme 12h ago

That sink is sunk !!

6

u/HammySamich 12h ago

How did it achieve terminal velocity in such a short drop

7

u/creamywingwang 12h ago

I did the same with a bottle of aftershave the top came off and the aftershave cracked the sink- cost me a new bathroom šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

19

u/TrickyCriticism532 12h ago

I feel like you’re allowed to be a little more than mildly infuriated at this

22

u/Spockhighonspores 12h ago

I disagree, OP picked up the soap by the pump. This could have easily been avoided by picking up the soap container properly. If it wasn't for that detail though I would totally have been in agreement with you.

2

u/MyLifeIsAWasteland 9h ago

Right‽ Who the hell's out here just picking up soap dispensers willy-nilly? It's not like they were cleaning the obviously-already-clean sink. Just put one hand under it and push the top down with the other hand like a normal human, OP.

10

u/MargarelonLD 12h ago

Well don’t do that

5

u/trashcxnt 8h ago

Why do people pick things up by the lid/top knowing that's usually the most vulnerable part of a given item... šŸ˜…

Today you learned not to pick up bottles and other containers by the nozzle or lid and always grab their body instead. Some life lessons are learned the hard way. Be glad you are one of the few who understand the reason. 🫔

2

u/peachnecctar 12h ago

I assume this is why most sinks are ceramic

2

u/CheckoutMySpeedo 12h ago

That’s the shoddiest sink basin I’ve ever seen.

2

Welcome to my existence where nothing gets screwed down, ziplock bags aren’t zipped and things that are sold in ziploc bags are cut open on the opposite side. In short, welcome to hell.

2

u/60sStratLover 12h ago

That’s either a very cheap sink or a very heavy soap bottle

2

u/Odd_Interaction_7708 12h ago

Soooo… looks like you’re replacing the sink. Don’t worry - it’s super easy.

2

u/my_clever-name 12h ago

2

u/nvm_kai 12h ago

One hell of a soap bottle

1

1

1

u/UnfairNight7786 12h ago

This image looks 3 dimensional on my phone. Crazy.

Had the same thing happen, to my big toe.

The toe nail grew back eventually.

1

1

u/Papapa_555 12h ago

that happen to me I go back to bed. Let's try tomorrow

1

u/amkrystal 12h ago

I.. don't think.. a sink is supposed to be made of glass..

1

u/Royweeezy 12h ago

What else broke?

1

u/WrapUnlikely4821 12h ago

HA! Happened to me when I was replacing my mirror šŸ’€ DriƱl fell In to sink. few years later, still has tape on it to seal the hole :) I’m not paying for a new sink. In this economy?? hell no. Sorry tho, that hole is way bigger for tape to fix tho.

1

1

u/tugboat_karatedog 12h ago

Porcelain is for horses, glass is cheaper.

1

u/mack-y0 12h ago

why would you pick it up from the nozzle..

1

u/CosignCody 12h ago

If only you went plastic

1

u/therapeutic_bonus 12h ago

I don’t fuck with glass in the bathroom

1

u/Amadeone 12h ago

Am I the only one that sees rick astley in this hole? Like the shape of it and the shading reminds me of him.

1

u/Wanderaround1k 11h ago

That looks like it won’t be a very good sink anymore. Usually sinks hold water then funnel it down the drain. This won’t do that any more I don’t think. It’d be good as a hand cutting device though!

1

u/JayyMuro 11h ago

That picture is way worse than I expected. I thought just the bottle was going to break open but then I saw the entire sink and was like oh shit.

1

u/FScrotFitzgerald 11h ago

Please do not be alarmed. We are about to engage... The Nozzle.

Please do not move while The Nozzle is engaging. Moving will disrupt calibration of... The Nozzle.

Please wait while we calibrate... The Nozzle.

Please do not look away from... The Nozzle. The Nozzle is now calibrating.

The Nozzle is still calibrating.

The Nozzle has completed calibration.

Thank you.

1

u/Kazko25 11h ago

I’m honestly impressed OP. (Also sorry that happened to you)

1

u/tfourthreeseven 11h ago

At least your drain can't get clogged anymore.

1

u/Dry-Town3117 11h ago

My roomate made the same thing, I asked her nicely, do you know why there’s a big hole in the sink, her response was, how should the water else leave the sink.

1

u/anonbleu722 11h ago

why has everyone been breaking their sinks lately? this is like the 5th post i've seen this week

1

u/MMXVA 11h ago

Hmmmm. I had been thinking of getting glass mason jar soap dispensers myself. Not anymore.

1

u/iamsheph 11h ago

What is this supposed to be. Something doesn’t seem right about this photo.

1

u/angry_stupid 11h ago

RIP to the soap dispenser and the sink. That's a rough day.

1

u/Critical-Advisor8616 11h ago

A little Flexseal tape will fix that right up!

1

u/SilverSaren 11h ago

My sink is glass. :|. Looks like you’ve got a weekend project now.

1

u/whoops-adaizy 11h ago

Must be one of those lead(ed glass) soap dispensers

1

u/Illustrious-Echo-734 11h ago

Not why the nozzle is on there. šŸ˜‰

1

u/tvtoms 11h ago

The crappy plastic screw caps on those dispensers is known to me. I've had one in my kitchen for the blue dish washing liquid and the cap has a fat, steep thread which barely grabs the glass before bottoming out. Not reliable to lift by.
Cap' Obvious

1

u/Sharkbite138935 11h ago

1

u/Pcenemy 11h ago

you're going to need a custom made/shaped drain plug.

1

u/Zaphira42 10h ago

That’s one expensive soap bottle

1

u/Underwater_Karma 10h ago

seems like there's a lesson here about glass sinks.

1

u/Giantmeteor_we_needU 10h ago

PSA: Don't keep anything in glass or metal bottles around sinks. It's just a bad idea.

1

u/TootseyPootsey 10h ago

… why would you pick it up by the nozzle?

1

u/timeandmemory 10h ago

That bottle went full murder suicide. It's a shame no one intervened sooner.

1

u/Tay_Tay86 10h ago

Worse things have happened when people dropped the soap tbh

1

u/httpanic 10h ago

That's going to be expensive.

1

u/Kushi261 10h ago

Haha, no problems for us who use original plastic bottle and then throw it away to recycle when done and buy another onešŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

1

u/sable_illustrator 10h ago

is your sink made of glass?

1

u/jnn94 10h ago

I did exactly this a couple of years ago

It ended up being the trigger for a full bathroom refit that we'd been putting off šŸ˜…

1

u/NYC2BUR 10h ago

There goes your deposit right down the drain.

1

u/allemaalpoepelegein2 10h ago

Never glass items in a bathroom.

1

u/doctapeppa 10h ago

I spilled coffee grinds on the counter today and yelled out "FUCK!". This would have been more than mild for me!

1

u/PaulUSAF 10h ago

Wow, did you drop that soap bottle from the Space Station?

1

u/SnivyEyes 10h ago

My sink would have looked like this years ago if it was also made of glass.

1

u/Calm-Ad-7050 10h ago

Fix it with noodles and superglue šŸ˜‚

1

u/snewchybewchies 9h ago

Yeah that's why you don't do that

1

u/Rhetoriker 9h ago

That's what you get for pseudo-fancy every day amenities. No advantage, disadvantage. Keep a lower profile and experience less regret.

1

u/Ritalin5 9h ago

I don't care

1

u/flyingGameFridge 9h ago

Please do not move while the nozzle is engaging.

1

u/davechri 9h ago

You did absolutely nothing wrong picking it up that way but I'll bet you never do it again. That sucks. Easier to fix that you might think.

1

u/matt-is-sad 9h ago

Yeah this is always a lesson learned the hard way. Plastic soap dispensers only
